  7. If you want something uplifting and thoughtful with beautiful photography, I recommend the 30 minute documentary, “Mongolia: The Man Who Loved Horses”. It’s free to watch on Arte, about a soft spoken man, Naranbadrakh Batkhuu, who has dedicated his life to reconnecting Mongolians with nature via horses. Most of the doco is focused on his personal mission to save horses from the abattoir. It’s worth a watch.

    Share or Repeat Posts/Comments

    Suppose you see someone's post or comment, and you want your connections to see it too. You have two ways to do this (if the author allows it).

    Look in the ⚙ dropdown menu for the item. You'll find two options: "Share this" and "Repeat this".

    Share this

    This option creates a brand-new post, under your channel's name. It includes the post you are sharing, plus any material that you want to add.

    "Share this" will be familiar if you've used Facebook's "Share" feature. Other platforms refer to it as "Quote-Post", "Quote-Tweet", "Retweet with Comment", "Reshare", "Reblog", or "Attach".

    Since you are the owner of the new post, if anyone adds a comment, it will appear only on your post. Comments are not sent back to the original author of the material that you've shared.

    You can set the audience for your new post, to control who can see it and who can comment.

    When should I use "Share this"?

    In any situation where you want to start a new conversation about someone else's post. For example:
    • The original post already has hundreds of comments, and you want to talk about it with people you know.
    • You want to take the discussion in a different direction, and not derail the discussion attached to the original post.
    • You have personal stuff to say about the original post, and you only want to say it to a few of your connections.
    • You want the original post to appear on your own channel's home page.

    Disadvantages of "Share this"

    • You are talking about someone's post behind their back (unless you include them in your post's audience). Some people may find this offensive.

    Repeat this

    This option alerts your connections to the original post. Other platforms call this feature "Boost", "Repost", or "Announce". The post is repeated in its original form, and you can't add any of your own words to it, or restrict the people who can see it.

    Any comments (made by you or others) will become part of the conversation attached to the original post.

    When should I use "Repeat this"?

    Whenever you want to draw attention to somebody else's post and its comments, without creating a new post of your own. For example:
    • Somebody is asking for assistance, and you want to spread the word to your own connections.
    • You want to help publicize an announcement, a news item, or a pretty picture.

    Disadvantages of "Repeat this"

    • The original post will not appear on your own channel's home page.
    • You can only add your own thoughts as a comment on the original post.

    Service_Classes.mc is attached. It's just the Hubzilla docs, with some formatting fixes, minus the Hubzilla service class options that (streams) doesn't support (total_pages, total_feeds, minimum_feedcheck_minutes, chatrooms, chatters_inroom).

    Service Classes

    Service classes allow you to set limits on system resources by limiting what individual accounts can do, including file storage and top-level post limits. Define custom service classes according to your needs in the .htconfig.php file. For example, create a standard and premium class using the following lines:
    // Service classes

    App::$config['system']['default_service_class']='standard'; // this is the default service class that is attached to every new account

    // configuration for standard service class
    App::$config['service_class']['standard'] =
    array('photo_upload_limit'=>2097152, // total photo storage limit per channel (here 2MB)
    'total_identities' =>1, // number of channels an account can create
    'total_items' =>0, // number of top level posts a channel can create (other posts and comments are unaffected)
    'total_channels' =>100, // number of connections the user can add (other users can still add this channel, even if the limit is reached)
    'attach_upload_limit' =>2097152); // total attachment storage limit per channel (here 2MB)

    // configuration for premium service class
    App::$config['service_class']['premium'] =
    array('photo_upload_limit'=>20000000000, // total photo storage limit per channel (here 20GB)
    'total_identities' =>20, // number of channels an account can create
    'total_items' =>20000, // number of top level posts a channel can create (other posts and comments are unaffected)
    'total_channels' =>2000, // number of connections the user can add (other users can still add this channel, even if the limit is reached)
    'attach_upload_limit' =>20000000000); // total attachment storage limit per channel (here 20GB)

    To apply a service class to an existing account, use the command line utility from the web root:

    util/service_class
    list service classes

    util/config system default_service_class firstclass
    set the default service class to 'firstclass'

    util/service_class firstclass
    list the services that are part of 'firstclass' service class

    util/service_class firstclass photo_upload_limit 10000000
    set firstclass total photo disk usage to 10 million bytes

    util/service_class --account=5 firstclass
    set account id 5 to service class 'firstclass' (with confirmation)

    util/service_class --channel=blogchan firstclass
    set the account that owns channel 'blogchan' to service class 'firstclass' (with confirmation)

    Service class limit options

    • photo_upload_limit - maximum total bytes for photos
    • total_items - maximum total toplevel posts
    • total_identities - maximum number of channels owned by account
    • total_channels - maximum number of connections
    • attach_upload_limit - maximum file upload storage (bytes)
    • access_tokens - maximum number of Guest Access Tokens per channel

  34.  Bill Statler wrote the following post Mon, 11 Sep 2023 12:36:25 -0700 Proposed documentation for Content Filters
    Here's a help file I wrote for the Content Filter app.

    #doco #CC0

    I think it's correct and fairly clear. If anyone wants to improve it, please comment.

    Content Filters

    Overview

    The Content Filter app (when installed) allows you to filter incoming content from all sources or from specific connections. The filtering may be based on words, tags, regular expressions, or language.

    You can set global filters for all incoming content in the Content Filter app.

    You can also set individual filters for each of your Connections. Select "Edit" for any connection, then look under Custom Filter.

    If you add filters under Do not import posts with this text, these are applied first. Any matching content will be removed.

    Then, any filters under Only import posts with this text are applied. Only matching content will be kept, and everything that doesn't match will be removed.

    Basic Filters

    TEXT

    Any text that doesn't start with one of the following: lang= lang!= # $ ? /

    Case-insensitive text match
    Example: covid (matches "covid", "COVID", "Covid", etc)

    LANGUAGE

    lang=

    Match language if it can be identified
    Example: lang=de (matches German-language content)

    lang!=

    Anything except this language
    Example: lang!=en (matches non-English content)

    HASHTAG

    #

    Match hashtag
    Example: #cats

    CATEGORY

    $

    Match category (requires installing the Categories app). Categories are "personal hashtags" that do not generally federate with other instances.
    Example: $Science

    ITEMS AND FIELDS

    ?

    Discussed below under Advanced Filters

    REGULAR EXPRESSIONS (REGEX)

    /

    Match a "regular expression". See numerous online help sites such as Regular-Expressions.info for regex assistance.
    Example: /gr[ae]y/ (matches "gray" and "grey")

    Advanced Filters

    ITEMS

    ?

    You can do a string/numeric/array/boolean match on the database fields of an item (a post, comment, etc). A complete listing is beyond the scope of this document, but see install/schema_mysql.sql and search for CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `item`. Here is a sampling:
    • body (text of the message)
    • verb (what this item does)
    • item_thread_top (first post in a thread, boolean)
    • item_private (0 = public message, 1 = restricted message, 2 = direct message)
    • ...etc...

    Available comparison operators are:
    • ?foo ~= baz -- item.foo contains the string 'baz'
    • ?foo == baz -- item.foo is the string 'baz'
    • ?foo != baz -- item.foo is not the string 'baz'
    • ?foo >= 3 -- item.foo is greater than or equal to 3
    • ?foo > 3 -- item.foo is greater than 3
    • ?foo <= 3 -- item.foo is less than or equal to 3
    • ?foo < 3 -- item.foo is less than 3
    • ?foo {} baz -- 'baz' is an array element in item.foo
    • ?foo {*} baz -- 'baz' is an array key in item.foo
    • ?foo -- true condition for item.foo
    • ?!foo -- false condition for item.foo (The values 0, '', an empty array, and an unset value will all evaluate to false)

    Example: ?verb == Announce (matches ActivityPub "boosts")

    FIELDS

    ?+

    Field match: ?+field item.object
    Usage is undocumented at present

    The pilot aimed the plane at the least accessible region of the planet. 4km underwater somewhere in a thousand mile area. All the character references don’t change the evidence. #mh370 #tv #doco

    All I will say is it’s voiced by the subject of the doco but he’s never seen, instead he’s acted by Alan Cumming. And it’s about an intriguing misadventure in his past. There’s a lot in there about identity and memory. Go see it, it’s enthralling.
