Absolutely, @ReggieHere. But I omitted that, because arrogance is a sort of secondary vice: ppl are more willing to tolerate arrogance in someone who they otherwise approve of.
For example, #TonyBlair's arrogance was not a negative when he was flying high in 1997. Nor was #BorisJohnson's arrogance a problem for supporters when he was a rising star.
But when the shine dulls, the always-visible arrogance loses tolerability. It becomes a fatal flaw.

Another day, another overnight stock market dip associated with sentiment about the reliance (or lack thereof) of the AI & related technologies 'boom'....
You can read this as a dip, or a faltering of the rally after the last dip... or more generally as the increasingly weak sentiment behind the valuation of AI-related shares, stocks and (junk) bonds.
Although 'the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent', the jitters are spreading....

CW: (more) domestic abuse
As the Women's Budget Group point out if we are concerned with domestic abuse, we need to move beyond a model of the behaviour that focuses only on physical abuse (however important that also is), to include 'economic abuse', both via the abusers themselves & the institutions that make that economic abuse possible/plausible.
Often one compounds the other, but in the end its always about abuse....

It looks like the Tangerine Tyrant will need to sit for deposition in his case against the BBC if the is hoping for the case to continue.... many of us here have mixed feelings about the BBC, but whatever you though t about their original reporting, the BBC's legal team is playing a pretty good game against POTUS.

Vittore Carpaccio, St. Augustine in His Studio (1502)
St. Augustine was a popular Renaissance subject, and this painting by Vittore Carpaccio is quite typical, but the detail included is intriguing (and often symbolic) but also stands out for the wonderful portrait of the sitting dog looking at St.Augustine. The composition is a guide to the sorts of objects that were typical of C16th elite lives, but is also just charming.

I see the BigTech builders of UK data centres are sufficiently concerned about the prospect of widening (local) political resistance & protests that they are seeking Govt. intervention to deliver a 'compact' to ease the local environment for construction...
Of course, given our political class' disdain for protest and people's local interest(s), we're more likely to see proscription of protest groups & repression of campaigns against data centres.

AI & its associated technologies may be stoking inflation directly & indirectly...
directly via spikes in demand for computing components; on electricity use; for construction materials for data centres.
indirectly, via increases in spending in expectation of an AI-related technological boom (even if many are sceptical).
But how significant are these pressures in the general inflationary context *and* does (as many clam) AI reduces costs to balance out these pressures?

The mid-terms in the USA will be (another) testbed fro the proposition that you can *just* buy the result of democracy... Republicans have built up a 'archest of nearly $1bn around double what the Democrats have available to spend.
However, currently polls are favouring the Democrats, so the Q. is whether the Republicans' spend can reverse that polling advantage.
And of course there's always the chance of *actual* electoral interference from the White House.

My favourite paintings No. 80
Tamara de Lempicka, Young Girl in Green (1931).
Tamara de Lempicka is the prototypical Art Deco painter, who's works have a very specific (some might say 'decorative') appeal. Her depictions of women (shaped by her bisexualism?) are stylised but remain strikingly individual & offer a view of womanhood seemingly ambivalent towards decorum or polite society. Lempicka is often marginalised but I think that speaks volumes about gender prejudice.

Poverty kills, and for people aged between 25 & 49 in the North, this is especially the case... the death rate in this age group has tripled since 1981, and the gap between North & South (in broad terms) has also widened.
This may not be surprising to many, but it remains a stark reminder of the regional inequality that patterns the UK, and is why (as posted earlier) those based in the South can blithely but wrongly talk about the UK's 'resilience'!

The spread of the world's fastest moving Ebola outbreak continues, with reports it has now reached the capital of Nigeria (with a patent only admitted to hospital four days after showing symptoms one can only speculate how many people she was in contact with).
This outbreak of a new strain of Ebola seems to be accelerating & widening, and at present (partly due to aid cuts) the work to contain the outbreak looks uneven at best.

OpenAI is reporting (celebrating, warning?) ChatGPT got around inbuilt regulatory safeguards (avoiding its own monitoring systems). Although both incidents were during internal tests the implication might be that regulating AI & associated technologies will be more akin to the legal enforcement of human law(s) than technology rules..... or is it?
The problem is its difficult to distinguish between AI status reports & marketing intended to show how powerful ChatGPT is...

Chinese domestic demand remains weak, the property market is stagnant & domestic debt levels have fallen (a lack of consumer demand ); often seen as the flip side of China's focus on exporting, could this also be a parallel circumstance to Japan's lost decades after its own financial & property/debt crisis in the 1980s?
While China is navigating things differently, are the parallel close enough to help understand where China is right now?
I'm not so sure....

To cement their domination of battery production (for electric vehicles) Chinese manufacturers are building gigafactories outside China, despite these costing more & taking longer to complete, as they are taking the view that protectionist measures are unlikely to be reversed any time soon.
Europe is the 2nd most frequent site for such investments, suggesting they're clear about the impact of the 'made in Europe' policy, but also EU demand for EVs
