The village of Doña Ana was founded in 1843, named after Doña Ana Robledo who died in the area in 1680 while fleeing south with other Spanish settlers during the Pueblo Revolt. It is a well-preserved, traditional 19th-century village north of Las Cruces. The historic Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Catholic church was built in 1844. It is the oldest church in Southern New Mexico.

This is a beautiful, relaxing stroll along the East Fork of the Jemez River, perfect area to look for wildflowers from June - September. The stream flows in a rocky canyon (popular with rock climbers) in a deep conifer forest. The stream meanders through a series of open meadows. The trail goes for about 2 miles before climbing out of the canyon in a series of switchbacks.
