Sunrise on Sierra Blanca peak in southern New Mexico is muted and hazy because of smoke from distant forest fires.

It's feast or famine in the southwest US. If it's dry in the summer, many fires burn and the air is filled with smoke. When monsoon rains return, and they will in a day or two, thunderstorms over recent burn scars lead to destructive flash flooding, especially for Ruidoso.
