  12. How to Block Unwanted Calls: Simple Ways to Stop Spam & Robocalls

Tired of Spam Calls? Here’s How to Take Control

Spam calls, robocalls, and unknown numbers can interrupt your day, drain your attention, and sometimes even pose security risks. Fortunately, your smartphone already has built-in tools that can dramatically reduce unwanted calls.

Here are three simple ways to block unwanted calls and regain control of your phone.

    1. Silence Unknown Callers

If you frequently receive calls from unfamiliar numbers, silencing unknown callers is one of the easiest solutions.

    How to do it:

Go to Settings Select Apps > Phone Scroll down and tap Silence Unknown Callers

This sends calls from numbers not in your contacts straight to voicemail while still logging them for review later.

👉 Ideal for reducing robocalls without missing important contacts.

    2. Screen Calls with Do Not Disturb

Another effective strategy is using your phone’s Focus or Do Not Disturb feature to filter who can reach you.

    Steps:

Open Settings Tap Focus > Do Not Disturb Select People Choose Allow Calls From → Contacts Only

This ensures only saved contacts can call while the feature is active — great during work hours, events, or downtime.

    3. Block Fake or Suspicious Numbers

Some users also block commonly spoofed numbers to reduce repeat spam attempts.

    Quick trick:

Create a contact with the number 000-000-0000 Block that contact

While it won’t stop every spam call, it can reduce certain spoofing attempts and nuisance calls.

Bonus Tips to Reduce Spam Calls

Avoid answering unknown numbers whenever possible Don’t return suspicious missed calls Register your number with the National Do Not Call Registry Use built-in carrier spam filtering if available

  16. Amazon's One Medical is egregiously violating patient #privacy and safety

Caroline O'Donovan: Leaked documents reveal patient safety issues at Amazon’s One Medical: Patient safety issues have increased since One Medical shifted care to a call center staffed by contractors, employees say.

"Since Amazon acquired the primary-care service One Medical, elderly patients have been routed to a call center — staffed partly by contractors with limited training — that failed on more than a dozen occasions to seek immediate attention for callers with urgent symptoms, according to internal documents seen by The Washington Post.

When one patient reported a 'blood clot, pain and swelling,' call center staff scheduled an appointment rather than escalating the matter for medical evaluation, according to a note in an internal incident tracking spreadsheet dated Feb. 19."

    I can’t decide among the possibilities... (1/3)

  20. Actually, this is an extension of the Bixsby Text Call service, which is an interesting way of screening suspected spammer calls. It deliberately answers your phone using a robot voice and asks the caller to state their business etc. The responses are converted to text for you to read, and you can type responses in, which are read out aloud by the "robot  voice" to the caller. The idea being this will cause many spam callers to abandon the call, and shields you from having to actually engage with spam callers on a personal level.

Of course, this Text Call service can also be used in situations for any call where you can't speak yourself (very loud surroundings, or possibly when in a theatre, etc).

This new development extends that functionality to now using AI to clone your own voice. How well, or fast, this actually works has not been tested outside of South Korea yet. But for suspected spam calls, I'd prefer actually that they speak to a robot voice.

Some caveats here: this feature is only currently available in Korean as the Bixby Custom Voice Creator app for a small number of Samsung handsets (the new Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra).

See Samsung says users will be able to clone their voice to respond to calls
