1999 Japanese deluxe #CD issue.Brilliant album by former #Kraftwerk member #KarlBartos. The album almost feels like a climax, with a calm track with snippets from TV shows as the first and the album is finished off with a really busy #techno-ish track that took a while to like for me. This was actually my most listened to album of October 2022, when I listened to it as a YT playlist because it isn't on Spotify.

Der heutige Blick in meine Musiksammlung fällt auf einen Musiker, der mit der Band Kraftwerk zu den Pionieren der elektronischen Musik zählt: Karl Bartos und sein Album Communication aus dem Jahr 2003, dass ich erst vor Kurzem als CD im Fediverse gekauft habe. Bartos studierte Klavier, Vibraphone und Schlagzeug in Düsseldorf bevor er 1975 als Schlagzeuger bei Kraftwerk einstieg.
1990 verließ Karl Bartos Kraftwerk und arbeitete in der Zeit danach u. a. mit Bernard Sumner (Joy Division/New Order) und Johnny Marr (The Smiths) an deren zweiten Album als Electronic („Raise The Pressure“, 1996). 2003 erschien das erste Album unter seinem eigenen Namen, „Communication“. Das Werk umfasst 10 Songs, in denen es um Kommunikation geht und in denen er viel von dem vorweg nimmt, was für uns heute alltäglich ist. So heißt es im ersten Lied „The Camera“: „Let me show you what I can do, people turn into objects and in the end the camera is gonna be your best friend“ oder in „Reality“: „The image of the world we see turns into another reality“. Musikalisch gibt es keine Überraschungen, dafür viel Kraftwerk, schließlich war Karl Bartos 16 Jahre lang für den typischen Kraftwerk-Rhythmus zuständig, der auch auf „Communication“ dominiert. Ich würde mir wünschen, dass Peter Hook eine Bass-Spur zum Song „Life“ einspielt, dann hätten wir einen klassischen New-Order-Track aus den 1990ern. Doch auch so ist es mein Favorit auf dem Album, geht ins Ohr und in die Beine.
„Communication“ ist jetzt auch schon 22 Jahre alt, klingt gleichzeitig sehr zeitgemäß, auch weil sich Karl Bartos der bekannten Kraftwerk-Muster bedient. Die waren ihrer Zeit bekanntlich sehr weit voraus und haben Synthie-Pop und Techno erst möglich gemacht. Da ist es doch nur legitim, wenn Karl Bartos sich davon etwas zurückholt.
Das Album ist übrigens weder auf Streaming-Plattformen noch bei Bandcamp erhältlich, umso mehr freut es mich, dass ich es als CD bekommen habe und das war nur ein glücklicher Zufall.

As much as I am a huge fan of #Kraftwerk I couldn't really appreciate most of #KarlBartos' solo work. Today I saw the live performance of his new #theme for #silentmovie classic "Das Kabinett des Doktor #Caligari" (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari ) at #AlteOper, #Frankfurt, and I have to say he really produced a beautiful score that supports the movie excellently. #electronicmusic #ost
