China Crises wurde 1979 von den 17-jährigen Engländern Eddie Lundon und Gary Daly gegründet. Eddie übernahm die Gitarre und den Gesang, Gary die Keyboards und ebenfalls den Gesang. Die Band besteht noch heute und wurde im Laufe der Jahre von vielen Musikern unterstützt. Das bekannteste Mitglied war vielleicht Kevin Wilkinson (1958 – 1999), der vorher Schlagzeuger bei The Waterboys war und China Crises von 1983 bis 1989 begleitete. Die Single „Whishful Thinking“ aus dem Jahr 1984 war der größte Hit von China Crises, der es in England und Irland in die Top-10 der Single-Charts schaffte, in Deutschland immerhin auf Platz 16. In Schweden belegte die Single sogar Platz 1 in den Radio-Charts.

Obwohl Gary Daly der Hauptsänger bei China Crises ist, wurde „Whishful Thinking“ von Eddie Lundon gesungen, der das Lied auch getextet hat. Der Text ist einfach, aber tiefgründig, und passt perfekt zur träumerischen, melancholischen Musik, die von einem prägnanten Synthesizer-Riff getragen wird. Einen richtigen Refrain hat das Lied nicht, die Zeilen „And if I wish to stop it all, and if I wish to comfort the fall, It’s just wishful thinking“ muten eher wie eine aufbauende Bridge an, nach der es jedoch wieder in die Strophe geht. Alles in allem ist „Wishful Thinking“ mal wieder ein zeitloser Song aus der frühen New Wave- und Synth-Pop-Ära, den ihr hier bei eurem bevorzugten Streaming-Dienst anhören könnt. Die Single-Version ist mit 4:08 Minuten, die leider viel zu schnell vergehen, eine gute halbe Minute kürzer als die Maxi-Single und die Album-Version (4:40 Minuten).

Die B-Seite „This Occupation“ ist übrigens nur auf dieser Single erhältlich. Es ist ein flotterer Synth-Pop-Song, der nicht die melancholische Stimmung von „Wishful Thinking“ verbreitet, dafür eher in Richtung Heaven 17 geht.

Wünsch Dir was zum 100. GothDiscoInferno

Am 26.12.2025 wird voraussichtlich das 100. GothDiscoInferno live auf Sendung gehen. Weil das auch der 2. Weihnachtsfeiertag ist, habe ich mir überlegt, daraus eine reine Wunschsendung zu machen. Das GothDiscoInferno hat zwar seine Heimat im Fediverse, die Wünsche sollen trotzdem nicht dort geäußert werden, sondern per E-Mail zu mir kommen. Damit möchte ich möglichst vielen Zuhörenden ermöglichen, Wünsche zu äußern. Also werde ich aus allen E-Mails, die bis zu meinem Geburtstag am 21.12.2025 eingehen, die Jubiläumsshow zusammenstellen. Ich werde alle Wünsche berücksichtigen, die passend und erfüllbar sind, bis die drei Stunden Sendezeit voll sind.

Die E-Mail-Adresse lautet [email protected] und es können beliebig viele Wünsche geäußert werden, die endgültige Auswahl treffe ich. Das können die häufigsten Wünsche sein oder die Außergewöhnlichsten. Ich bin sehr gespannt, was da von euch kommt.

Um nicht nur die Musikwünsche, sondern auch den Datenschutz zu berücksichtigen, werde ich das Postfach und damit auch die E-Mails und E-Mail-Adressen nach der Auswertung löschen.

Our Darkness – Die 100 besten Songs zwischen New Wave & Gothic laut Radio Eins (rbb)

Im Rahmen ihrer „Sommersonntage“ hat Radio Eins von rbb heute die 100 besten Songs zwischen New Wave & Gothic in einer 10-stündigen Sendung gespielt. Ermittelt wurden die Songs und das Ranking von einer 131-köpfigen Fachjury aus der Musikbranche. Ich kenne nicht alle Personen, konnte darunter jedoch wenige Vertreter aus dem Gothic-Bereich ausmachen. Andy und Campino von den Toten Hosen sind ja eher dem Punk-Rock zugeneigt, Tobias Künzel von den Prinzen (der sich in seiner Top10 als Veljanov/Deine Lakaien-Fan outet) und Rod Gonzales von den Ärzten (der eine persönliche Ansage für She’s In Parties von Bauhaus eingesprochen hat) hätte ich auch keine Genrekenntnisse zugetraut, einzig Bela B. war ja mal als Grufti unterwegs und hat ganz stabil Bela Lugosi’s Dead von Bauhaus auf 1 und Incubus Succubus von X-Mal Deutschland aud die 2 gesetzt hat. Gefeiert habe ich Thees Uhlmann (Tomte), der in seiner persönlichen Top10 keinen bekannten Hit auf die Spitzenposition gesetzt hat, sondern Angepasste Spießerschweine von Die Tödin aus dem Jahr 2023. Unter die besten 100 Songs hat dieses Lied es leider nicht geschafft. Von meinen Lieblingssongs neueren Datums landete dagegen immerhin Pain von Boy Harsher auf Platz 98.

Die Sendung ist in vier quasi ohrgerechten Häppchen à 2 Stunden in der ARD-Mediathek nachhörbar oder in einer Playlist bei Spotify.

Die allermeisten der Songs habe ich auch schon in den bisherigen 80 Sendungen vom GothDiscoInferno gespielt. 😉
