How to get a package removed from #Gentoo?
1. Add a new #NIH dependency.
2. The dependency turns out to use coherent.build. Nightmare! Oh, wait, apparently coherent.build generates source distributions that use flit.core (understandable; coherent.build is unusable).
3. The dependency depends on chardet (the project famous for GPL copywashing). Okay, technically it works with the older version, and the dependency is optional with poor person's fallback, so I guess it would be fine.
4. But hey, this package is not used by anything, and the last package using it in Gentoo was removed in 2020, after not being touched for 4 years already. Also, that package is not maintained upstream since 2017, so I guess there's negligible risk of it ever coming back. -
PSA: The annual #Gentoo #Python switch planned for 2026-06-01. CPython 3.14 becomes the default, 3.11 and #PyPy 3.11 go out. The latter fills me with sadness but keeping it is unrealistic now that projects are aggressively pushing for 3.12+.
Of course, we'll continue shipping the interpreters, so you can use venvs if you like. However, that's going to become harder to use since many projects either don't ship PyPy wheels or don't work on PyPy at all without patching.
We will revisit PyPy support if a version compatible with Python 3.12 appears in reasonable time.

Screenshot Saturday. Finally worked out why I couldn't get a shadow around the conky now playing.
An errant "! name~=''", in picom.conf.
Sorted.

#gentoo #portage feature I learned about today by accident:
emerge --pretend --fetchonly (shortened as emerge -pf) will print all the URLs it'd use to download the various distfiles, instead of listing the results of the dependency resolution (as --pretend would usually do).
Caught me off-guard, I don't think this is documented anywhere. Glad to know portage still hits me with surprises after using it for 7 years 😅

Yeah, right, if it weren't the 2026-04-01 I'd still be suspicious

Building a #gentoo qcow2 image for #OracleCloud using qemu-system-aarch64 setup like the A1 instance because I'm a masochist.
Sure, I've got a ton of x86_64 cores I could throw at it, or I could setup distcc, or lots of stuff other things. But nah.

@miekg Oh... I feel you are an expert there :)
My path have started from gentoo with emerge with later various distro hops, like OpenSuse Ubuntu Mint Debian, etc.
But deep dive Gentoo I liked the most, since it had the least issues with packages. The reason I've never came back there, is a compilation time.
I remember how I built KDE for more than 20 hours (Celeron 2.4 in early 2000s).After many years in MacOS (right now it's also a primary OS, Arch is only on a big PC), it's really confusing that many things are not available without hacks.
In MacOS Homebrew made it so simple, it's hard to accept that Linux may have so many complications with a package distributions. It looks like snap or flatpack should fix this issue, but they don't. Many things from snap don't work or do not available, flatpack the same.
Installing Homebrew in Linux does not feel right.

@joergi Funny, my first Linux happened to be also a #SuseLinux bought around the same time as a physical copy. I can remember that it came with a printed manual.
Soon after this I went completely nuts with #gentoo -
There should be a new package set in Gentoo Linux to mark packages that used LLMs so I can easily mask them.

I did see that LTT vid come up some days ago but I didn't watch them. They're probably entertaining for normal people but I don't really care about their vids anymore. For sure that'll bring people who'll stick to Linux permanently and it's good I guess.
I'll just keep on using whatever distro I want. I really wanna get a 5950X so I can do LFS and gentoo lol. Fuck getting new mobo, cpu and ddr5 ram these days

Gentoo Linux on my mini PC: Encrypted root + BTRFS with subvolumes + OpenRC + Limine bootloader. Its a start! ✅
Distro-hopping now on pause. Month of March is all about Gentoo. Plan is to take this base system and build it up to a lightweight desktop with Wayland + TBD window manager.
Next up: Learn more about Portage/emerge.

Gentoo is the latest Linux distribution to ditch GitHub. Let's hope that, first, many follow, and second, Codeberg receives the funding it needs to maintain its service.
