1 CIBC: Brisk hiring in July saw the #unemploymentrate tick lower again in #Canada, despite a slight improvement in #labourforce participation. The 75K increase in #employment was well above consensus forecasts (20K), with the unemployment rate of 6.4% the lowest in 2 years. 🧵

#StatsCan: #Employment increased by 75,000 (+0.4%) in July and the #employmentrate rose 0.1 percentage points to 60.9%. The #unemploymentrate declined 0.1 percentage points to 6.4%.

2 CIBC: … with the participation rate holding steady and population growth slower than in recent years, it was enough to see the #unemployment rate edge down to 6.5%.

1 CIBC: The #Canadian #labourmarket continued to add #jobs in June, putting the weakness seen over the first four months of the year further into the rearview mirror. The 18K reading was slightly above expectations (consensus 10K) and, … 🧵

Just finished a PoC if i could bootstrap pkgsrc on my self-assembled minimal docker container.
Ingredients: skarnet-musl-toolchain. busybox-static, toybox-static, gawk, gsed, gtar, gmake, libz, libexpat, libxcrypt, libbsd, libmd, musl-{bsdcompat,fts,obstack,rpmatch}, and finally pkgsrc from netbsd.
after a few ins and outs, and learning the ropes, bootstrapping worked flawlessly.
shout out for the developers for their good work!

unfortunately i dont know ppc but from the description and the code it looks like this is addressing heavy register utilization.
hmm ... userland vs kernelland ... it might be a (un-)common problem in the former but not (or almost never) in the latter.
i know that T2SDE also builds many architectures with both glibc and musl and also might have its own patches for it.

3 CIBC: … By sector, #informationculture&recreation saw the largest decline in #employment on the month, and by class of worker the reduction was driven wholly by full-time (-47K) and by #publicsector paid #employment (-10K). #cdnecon #LFS

2 CIBC: … and, combined with a slight uptick in #participation, resulted in a rise in the #unemployment rate to 6.9%. The #unemploymentrate increased most for young people aged 15-24, but also continued to drift higher for core aged (25-54) workers. 🧵 #cdnecon #LFS #jobs

1 CIBC: The #Canadian #labourmarket continued its weak start to 2026 in April, with a third decline in #employment within the first four months of the year seeing the #unemployment rate rise further. The -18K decline in #jobs came against consensus expectations for a 10K increase …🧵 #cdnecon #LFS

i love posting inflammatory takes on window managers and desktop environments on tumblr.com. a lot of shitting on tiling window managers and shilling #fvwm and #rio
i do unironically really enjoy those desktops too and i actually dont like tiling window managers. probably comes from my distaste for #arch and arch subsidiaries. if you want a diy system just install #gentoo or #lfs
my hatred for arch is only a little embellished.

I’ve completed Linux LFS 101 as part of my ongoing learning in systems and DevOps.
This milestone helped me develop a stronger understanding of how Linux systems are structured and built, along with practical insights into low-level system operations.
Continuing to build expertise in modern development and infrastructure tools.

How can they enforce this #os #ageverification bullshit? Sure, #apple, #google, and #microslop have the infrastructure to ID everyone, and maybe even #fedora and #ubuntu, but what about #Linux distros run by a small team or one person? What if I compile my own #lfs kernel? What if I write my own OS with blackjack and hookers? Will it soon become illegal to run #Linux or #BSD? I need to start downloading the entire #debian repository before it's too late...

CW: CW: ARM kvetching
I'm looking at two #ARM devices sitting on my dresser, both tablets.
One is a locked-down piece of garbage, designed to be a locked-down piece of garbage. I regret buying it, because its utility is obscured by the horrible software stack on it, but it was stupidly cheap, an easy fire-and-forget purchasing decision.
The other is a lovely piece of open hardware, designed for openness, designed for linux. It was graciously sent to me by a #fedifriend last year. It is sadly out of support from the distro that supported it, and is basically stuck at nearly 10-year-old software versions without any path for an upgrade, unless I do some insane skill levelling-up and do an ARM #LFS on it, or something else nearly as hacky.
Both devices are sadly useless to me, even though one was designed to be a closed surveillance helldevice, and the other an open platform.
This is because ARM sucks. It has always sucked, and it will always suck. There are no open hardware interface standards, no easy way to address the hardware with FOSS drivers, and even when you do have FOSS software for it, it rarely finds its way upstream. The hardware itself is inspired, but the software/firmware/driver stack is utterly Kafkaesque.
I'm not going to belittle folks who get Apple Silicon devices to run linux on them, nor would I ever besmirch the heroic, herculean efforts of the #Asahi team to get linux working on that hardware, but please never forget that those are herculean efforts, and should they ever cease, your hardware support is dead in the water.
As for me, I'd rather have a thermal-belching, potato-performant Intel Atom-based brickphone than a sleek, battery-sipping, crazy-performant ARM laptop. 😅

Been reading "How Linux Works" by Brian Ward and it makes me want to install Arch / Gentoo / LFS despite knowing that this is a terrible idea for a computer I want to y'know, use.
How do people deal with systems they just want to play with for sysadmin stuff? VMs / containers? Homelab? I have hardware I could play with.

Once again #KDE tries to get rid of minority distributions. This time by replacing SDDM with PLM (plasma login manager). PLM depends on systemd.
So sooner or later no KDE for #alpineLinux, #FreeBSD, #Gentoo, #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, #Slackware, #VoidLinux, etc.For #BLFS it is no problem as BLFS itself recently discontinued its non-systemd version.

#LFS has version numbers? :o

Does #LFS really help you understand Linux? Because even just using a slightly less user-friendly distro without a desktop makes it feel like Linux is an IKEA kit OS, but with each part made by a different vendor. :E
Sometimes I wonder if it's even possible to understand Linux. It's never still long enough to document it, which is NOT a compliment. :P

🎉 Hello, all my #GNU friends, today I have a big celebration. 🎆 Yesterday, we celebrated the fall of totalitarianism in Czechia on November 17. Today, exactly 36 years later, I am celebrating my technological freedom, as I successfully booted my first #LFS #linux from scratch build.🎉
