  1. Getting underway with the "move my #CGHMN server to real hardware" project. The poll I posted a few days ago said y'all wanted me to run OpenBSD 3.0, but I found that it didn't work well with my hardware so I settled for Linux. Although I'm doing something interesting: I'm running #LinuxFromScratch! Specifically LFS 3.3. After solving the performance problems I was having with the VIA C3 CPU, the bottleneck at this point seems to be the CF card I'm using for storage.

  7. It's spring time, which means it's time for me to get bored with the operating system on my daily driver and start to re-investigate my options.  The oncoming onslaught of age verification laws that look like they were written by badly trained AI is also helping preempt this thought, since Linux distributions will of course be forced to react in some manner.

I'm currently running Project Bluefin, which is an opinionated variation of the Universal Blue project.  I'm a fan, and I'm not investigating change because of anything holding me back in the current front.

    Ground rules:

    1. I've run Fedora for almost 2 decades.  While I certainly can work in Ubuntu/derivatives, I'd prefer not to simply due to toolset familiarity.
    2. I know, Arch exists.  I don't want to.  Did Gentoo before Pentium was a thing and compile time flags actually mattered.  Don't need to do that again unless some other compelling reason.
    3. If I'm going to go all the way in on managing the tool, I'll go all the way to Linux from Scratch.  At least that way I've built the OS from ground up, so there's actual benefit to compiling everything from scratch - not imagined performance gains on i7's with 64GB ram.
    4. If you choose "Something Else," leave a comment with the suggestion and discuss/justify why you think I should move.  I'm not against new things, but it won't replace my daily driver "just because, bro."
    5. Don't do the distro war thing.  It was tiring on IRC in 2002, it's exhausting 25 years later.  Sell your opinion on it's own merits, not by flaming other things.

Boosts welcome.  It'll be a fun time.

  15. I did see that LTT vid come up some days ago but I didn't watch them. They're probably entertaining for normal people but I don't really care about their vids anymore. For sure that'll bring people who'll stick to Linux permanently and it's good I guess.

I'll just keep on using whatever distro I want. I really wanna get a 5950X so I can do LFS and gentoo lol. Fuck getting new mobo, cpu and ddr5 ram these days

  29. About to go on a train with Chi and B.

Chi decided to learn Linux by building Linux from Scratch.

The next stable release will have systemd so that sounds like a good idea

    linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/

Is UEFI boot still in BLFS?

I guess we'll know soon enough

Got a a brand new VM on the laptop ready to go.
Tarballs and patches downloaded and the latest Gentoo Live image downloaded.

We have about 4 hours to kill so that should almost get her there.

I'll report back how it went.
