I think this #Linus/#LTT video makes it very clear this thing I've always thought about #Linux - Linux has been for a while now, extremely ready for Developers and Tinkerers. Ready doesn't mean trouble-free, nope, but usable AND pleasant to use (a big productivity boost even in my case) - but will encounter issues that these groups of people will be able to solve, or, work around them with relative ease.

For normies though, nah, it's def not ready to varying extents depending on who you are. This doesn't mean that they couldn't use Linux, cos it is indeed still usable and pleasant to use for ~90% of use cases - but they will most def encounter issues they absolutely would not be able to solve on their own, and we know how not a small number of people in the Linux user community are useless or even harmful and shouldn't be relied on for help (for these normies).

For normies that still wish to use Linux, they def can but it's def highly recommended for them to only do so if they have someone (IRL) they can rely on for help - like any friends or fam members who are already using Linux, no different than when you're growing up and using #Windows/#macOS for the first time. Also, thanks to #Microsoft, the incentive to ditch Windows for something like Linux has been steadily growing and may even make the learning pains of using/experimenting with Linux more acceptable and worth it, compared to staying on a sinking ship that is Windows.

These people however may also opt for macOS, tho I think the biggest blocker for #Apple from gaining market share in this space is the fact that their OS is locked to their hardware, and their hardware - as amazing as they are, are incredibly locked down and not upgradable/serviceable. Anyway, someday we may see the day where Linux is ~99-100% ready for normies, but today is def not the day. Videos like LTT's and maybe others too are good sources on why that is the case, to us who may already be too familiar with Linux to 'have the eyes' to see these issues. It's also why I started documenting my Linux Wiki in the first place, when I migrated away from Windows - as a reminder on the issues I stumble upon, and how I solved them.

EV Charging Cables at Linus Media Group were stolen. They complain about the manufacturer of their current chargers, Grizzl-E, not selling replacement cables. Third party sellers offer them for 200$ which was to expensive in their opinion.
Instead they decided to get completely new chargers from their sponsor Ubiquiti, for free of course. They would cost 500$ new each.
The catch: Ubiquiti doesn't sell replacement cables in their online store either. They're playing us for absolute fools.

The latest #LTT #Linux challenge exemplifies that Linus is indeed cursed, but not for his choice in distribution and the nature of technical issues that ensue, but cursed with half a brain causing the worst possible judgement calls imaginable for this sort of thing:

• goes with listicles again
• asks ChatGPT :drgn_flat_x_x:
• chooses Pop!_OS again after it came out on top on listicles and ChatGPT told him so
• Steam and games break for inexplicable reasons, audio issues, Cosmic glitches out
• does it all while at a LAN party, where people wait on him to sort his shit out

Meanwhile Luke and Eliah have such a smoother experience (albeit, after some hiccups) because they:

• chose the more sensible approach of either going with something they already have experience with (Luke, CachyOS)
• chose something that has a reputation of being first-time user-friendly (Eliah, Bazzite)
• do it in an environment that allows for trouble shooting without pressure

I know, one shouldn't expect anything from a tech entertainment channel, but I find it notable that everyone besides Linus is so much better cut out to do the job than their boss. And this is one of the tech channels with one of the bigger audiences.

I can only hope it shows people how NOT to approach this.

To be clear, I'm not annoyed at LTT/Linus for not understanding certain things about Linux. That's fine. I'm annoyed that he used an LLM to pick a bad distro that any proper web search would've indicated is a bad idea, decided to install an unfamiliar operating system at a fuckin LAN party, then pitched a tantrum calling Linux gamers snowflakes because it didn't immediately work. I'm sorry, but that's rude as fuck. :wlfWhat:​ Any OS you install is going to need some time to troubleshoot after you install it, you're just more used to troubleshooting Windows. Don't install an OS you're not used to then insult the community of that OS because you didn't give yourself time to do any research or any time to troubleshoot it.

Like, ugh. I'm so tired of Windows users insulting Linux users because Linux isn't Windows.

I'll just keep on using whatever distro I want. I really wanna get a 5950X so I can do LFS and gentoo lol. Fuck getting new mobo, cpu and ddr5 ram these days

I picked a bad time to start watching Linus Tech Tips again. Linus Sebastian doing a "Linux Challenge" by asking ChatGPT which distro to use, having it stupidly suggest a distro that's effectively running a beta desktop environment, then blaming Linux when it inevitably doesn't work is just infuriating.

I'm going to lose my mind. Why does Linus of #LTT always install some gamer-focused distro three layers removed from the stable base distributions that actually do all of the heavy lifting? Please for the love of all that is holy try #fedora or #ubuntu.
He just does not get that the #Linux kernel does the same thing between distributions and he's just opting into more niche/unmaintained package ecosystems. You can use any desktop environment, any software on any distro. Just use something stable

I swear to god the #Linux #gaming challenge on #LTT, with Linus specifically, will always be cursed lololol. Linus picking #popOS (on ideal #AMD hardware) and experiencing so many issues I have never, ever seen or experienced on something like #EndeavourOS for yeaaaars now without any special configuration or wtv (on #NVIDIA even) genuinely reinforces my opinion (backed by experience) that #ArchLinux based distros (minus vanilla Arch or #Manjaro) is always somehow the better, more user-friendly experience for #Windows users or gamers in general. Seriously. #Ubuntu (perhaps even #Debian) based distros just ain't it, most of the time (for these users). There's a reason the most popular gaming distros rn are both based on Arch, #Valve 's #SteamOS and the 'hot' distro atm, #CachyOS.
