We have had more than our average rain for August in the first half of the month. The turtles don't mind rain, but a pond filter got messed up and overflowed, emptying the little pond where three spend the summer. So my big girls are hanging out inside until I have a minute to take the filter apart and refill the pond (unless the rain beats me to it). They have decided watching kids movies is a good way to spend a rainy day.

I haven't found any monarch caterpillars yet this year (only spotted one adult so far) so I ordered some painted lady caterpillars to raise with my grandson. Most of them emerged yesterday and we had a magical time releasing them into the garden.

Took a break from turtles last night to pick up a coyote pup who had been hit by a car nearby and drove him an hour away to meet a wildlife rehabilitator I know who specializes in fox and coyote. This evening she sent me this picture of the youngster on his feet. (Yay!) He has head trauma and will be healing for awhile, but this is an improvement from yesterday when he just fell over.

Midland painted turtles from a clutch of eggs removed from a mom who was hit by a car on her way to nest and did not survive. Will be released back to mom's home when they get bigger.

The orphaned grey squirrels I have been raising are partially weaned and fully into all kinds of shenanigans. I have to keep adding enrichment to their cage to keep them occupied while they practice their squirrel skills. They are halfway to release and I will soon be hands off with their care, but I can enjoy their cute faces for a while longer.

When life is chaotic, add baby squirrels!
Six orphaned grey squirrels (two litters combined) are in my care. I only take older babies, sometimes transferred from other wildlife rehabbers so they have more room for neonates and sometimes they come in older. The latter need extra time to learn that they are safe with me. There are four of them in this group, but they are coming around.
What's a bit more chaos, right?

Wut?!?
I wish I could capture the motion of the foot stamping that was going on. Red squirrels have very expressive body language. He was mad that I was sitting too close to a peanut for him to grab it safely. (I did leave it for him after the picture.)

Back in February I put my then 15 month old grandson in the car and took him with me to pick up an injured eastern screech owl from the finder and transport her to a raptor rehabilitator. Today we got back in the car to watch her return to the wild, his first release!
