#Sudbury & #Harrow Road Station’s underpass has been transformed into a large-scale mural funded by a community grant from Chiltern Railways’ #Community Investment Fund. The artwork, installed by Friends of Barham Library, reflects the #history and heritage of the station and surrounding area, and is located a short walk from #Barham Community Library. Created by mural artist LeSpleen in collaboration with the group, the piece depicts the station’s early years when steam trains ran through open countryside in the early 1900s. It also includes a plaque outlining the station’s history. The mural was officially unveiled at an event on Tuesday 19 May. Chiltern Railways said the project improves station environments and customer experience, while the Friends of Barham Library said it brings #accessible public art celebrating local #heritage. The fund supports community projects that enhance stations, encourage #sustainable #travel and strengthen local links.

#Transport for #London (TfL) is inviting #Barking and #Dagenham residents to take part in ‘The Big Shift’ during Innovation Week, exploring why some people choose to drive rather than use public transport, cycling or walking. Insights will help reduce congestion and support the Mayor’s target for 80% of trips by active travel or public transport by 2041.
The workshop involves parents or carers of children aged 4–11, new drivers aged 17–19, and residents aged 65 and over. Participants attend two one-hour in-person sessions on 12 June in Barking and Dagenham and 22 June at TfL offices. The first explores travel motivations; the second reviews and judges ideas developed by #TfL staff.
Participants receive a £50 voucher. Places are limited and not guaranteed. Applications close 31 May 2026, with successful applicants notified by 5 June. Eligibility and demographic questions must be completed to apply.

🇬🇧🚆 The #UK #Transport Secretary has announced a major reset of #HS2 after years of mismanagement, setting new cost and delivery targets aimed at completing the railway more quickly and at lower cost. The project is now expected to cost between £87.7bn and £102.7bn, with ministers blaming earlier underestimates, missed works and inefficiencies, as well as inflation. HS2 trains will run at 320km/h rather than 360km/h, a change expected to save up to £2.5bn and cut at least a year from construction. Services between Old Oak Common and #Birmingham Curzon Street are expected to begin between 2036 and 2039, with the full #London to Birmingham route due between 2040 and 2043. Ministers say cancelling HS2 could cost as much as completing it. The #Government says the reset has already reduced bureaucracy, improved productivity and delivered several construction milestones ahead of schedule.

A new report from the Clean Air South network has highlighted the role of cleaner #transport and zero-emission buses in improving air quality across southern #England. Produced by the #University of #Southampton with local authorities, businesses and health organisations, the report showcases projects aimed at reducing pollution and improving public health.
Among the case studies is Portsmouth’s electric bus programme, delivered by First Bus, #Portsmouth City Council and #Hampshire County Council. The city’s 62 zero-emission buses have completed nearly four million journeys, helping cut emissions and improve air quality.
The report also stresses the importance of collaboration between councils, industry, healthcare organisations and communities. First Bus said it remains committed to expanding its zero-emission fleet, with more than a quarter of its #UK #buses now zero-emission and a target of a fully zero-emission fleet by 2035.

🚄💷⚠️ #HS2 chief executive Mark Wild has warned that cancelling the #railway and remediating construction sites could cost between £33bn and £58bn in 2025 prices, excluding money already spent. In advice to the #UK Department for #Transport, Wild said there was “little evidence” dismantling major infrastructure would cost less than building it, noting that tunnels, bridges and viaducts were designed to last 120 years, not be removed. HS2’s assessment assumes a “realistic remediation scenario”, involving measures to make sites safe and stable rather than fully restoring land to its original condition, which Wild said could prove even more expensive. The estimate includes contractor costs, claims, HS2 overheads and potential land resale profits, with a 66% optimism bias applied because of the unprecedented scale and uncertainty of cancelling a project like HS2.

🚄🖥️ The Northern City Line between Finsbury Park and Moorgate has marked one year since the removal of its lineside signals, becoming Great Britain’s first commuter route without traditional signalling in May 2025. Over the past year, Great Northern has run around 70,000 services using in-cab digital signalling, rising to 138,000 including earlier overlay period.
The line is a pathfinder for the £1.4bn East Coast Digital Programme, introducing #European #Train Control System (ETCS) digital signalling on the East Coast Main Line. The project with Network Rail has focused on integrating digital systems, retraining staff and improving operations.
Operators say the digital system has improved reliability after early adjustments, with lessons from the Northern City Line shaping wider East Coast Main Line rollout this year. The programme aims to deliver a more efficient, safer and more sustainable #railway via gradual migration to in-cab signalling.

A Weekend Bus Hopper trial will be introduced on #Transport for #London #buses and trams for six weekends between 25 July and 31 August 2026, including the August bank holiday, under MD3502, a Mayoral decision by Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, in the Good Growth directorate. Across Saturdays and Sundays, travel will cost the price of a single daily fare per day. The trial aims to test whether simpler, lower weekend fares can increase ridership, support London’s economy, and ease cost-of-living pressures, with bus demand still around 8% below pre-pandemic levels. The Mayor has allocated £20 million in business rates funding to cover revenue impacts and implementation costs. #TfL will assess outcomes using ridership data and customer surveys, with findings used to inform future fares policy. Existing concessions remain unchanged, and standard fares will resume after the trial.

#Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:
✈️ #TfL has released a February 2026 policy paper on Heathrow expansion following a Freedom of Information request. The document sets out TfL and the Mayor of London’s concerns over the environmental and transport impacts of a proposed third runway at #Heathrow. It warns expansion could increase aircraft movements by 58 per cent and add more than 40,000 daily vehicle trips unless major public transport investment is secured. The paper highlights risks to carbon targets, air quality, noise levels and road congestion, while noting changes since the original Airports National Policy Statement in 2018, including the Elizabeth line, #ULEZ expansion and tighter climate obligations. TfL says any revised policy must include binding environmental conditions, stronger public transport targets and safeguards to prevent worsening pollution and congestion.

Alstom has held its first Americas Supplier Day in #Newark, New Jersey, bringing together 133 suppliers from North and South America, Europe and Asia between 12 and 14 May. The event focused on strengthening collaboration as demand for rail equipment and services continues to grow across the region, driven by fleet renewals and government investment. Discussions covered increasing localisation, improving supply chains and ensuring projects are delivered on time and to high standards of quality, safety and performance. Alstom said the summit comes as it begins production on several newly awarded contracts. Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom #Americas, said strong partnerships and effective delivery would be essential to meeting rising passenger rail demand. Alstom employs nearly 15,000 people across 12 countries in the Americas.
