Seeing how it is actually possible to reduce the number of cars and how much the remaining cars pollute even in large cities – and how that has a real tangible effect on children's health and well being makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
A better world is possible. Not just in theory.

Study finds London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone, introduced in 2019, has already had beneficial effacts on children’s lung development

"Examinations of London schoolchildren before and after the introduction of the city’s ultra-low emission zone #Ulez found a restoration of lung capacity that had been stunted by exposure to pollution."
Why was it so hard to decide?
Ulez was never a crack down on people driving, always a push for better respiratory health. 🚗 💨
I think media spinned it as a restriction on liberties because of who funds them (rich people). An assessment of the results: https://mastodonapp.uk/@ianvisits/117121191732125163

I remember Gammon losers taking the cameras down, not because they were spying on women seeking abortions or anything like that, because they wanted to pollute our lungs with their old cars.
Well 'Fuck you' lads, wrong side of History again!

@maudenificent the article I was looking for: “London: Estimated toxic air-related deaths drop by 40%“
Change can be made; Powerful influencers make sure only negative stories about positive change. Hence it’s “too hard”.

Sadiq Khan's ULEZ saves lives. Pollution linked deaths in London down 40% since 2019.

Oh no, fewer people are going to hospital for the effects of air pollution, how dare they! /s
Mad how people can be convinced this is against their interests just because of the hallowed place Cars have in our society...

#Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:
✈️ #TfL has released a February 2026 policy paper on Heathrow expansion following a Freedom of Information request. The document sets out TfL and the Mayor of London’s concerns over the environmental and transport impacts of a proposed third runway at #Heathrow. It warns expansion could increase aircraft movements by 58 per cent and add more than 40,000 daily vehicle trips unless major public transport investment is secured. The paper highlights risks to carbon targets, air quality, noise levels and road congestion, while noting changes since the original Airports National Policy Statement in 2018, including the Elizabeth line, #ULEZ expansion and tighter climate obligations. TfL says any revised policy must include binding environmental conditions, stronger public transport targets and safeguards to prevent worsening pollution and congestion.

“And Breathe Normally”: Impacts of low emission zones on sick leave and mental well-being.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167268125001143
"we observe substantial improvements in labour productivity, with sick leave reduced by 18.5% from pre-LEZ levels."
"further supported by improvements in physical health, with the LEZ reducing the incidence of long-term health conditions by 6.8% and respiratory issues by 10.2%."

Was also ist geschehen?

These old people allegedly still moaning about #ULEZ in #Upminster (which is within Greater #London) are likely being stubborn and petulant and holding on to old diesel #cars maybe out of spite (or even hoping Reform will scrap the ULEZ) - a 25 year old petrol car can be ULEZ compliant, and they could easily sell non compliant vehicles in Essex or Suffolk (particularly if they have automatic transmissions, folk want them out here).
They've also had /several years/ warning the zone was going to be expanded *and* a scrappage scheme..

#Transport for #London will run most services from 20 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, but planned closures and changes will affect parts of the network. Public transport will not operate on most lines on #Christmas Day, and some routes, including the Elizabeth line, will be closed on Boxing Day. Services will finish early on Christmas Eve. Apart from planned works, transport will run through the night on New Year’s Eve, though stations may close at short notice to manage crowds. Santander Cycles, rental e-scooters, taxis and private hire will operate throughout, while walking and cycling routes remain open except for New Year’s Eve restrictions. The Congestion Charge will be suspended from 25 December to 1 January, though #ULEZ applies as normal. The DLR will run an amended service from 13 December to 4 January as fleet protection work continues. #TfL advises customers to plan ahead, check before travelling and take extra care during busy periods.

We're into the end game of #UCLChemAirPoll for this year - we're checking data and lesson plans. Striking to see the patterns emerging. I'm beginning to think that we can see the impact of the #ULEZ as plenty of our numbers are lower than I remember them in the past.
Also plenty of learning here about scaffolding to explain subtle concepts like calibration curves to 11-12 year olds. "Chemistry can make invisible molecules visible. Graphs do the same for numbers." -
UK cars #towed away for repair are being held ransom
#Bidfood delivery lorry reversed into my car in January
Bidfood uses management company #VMS for repairs & provide hire #car
Since then
- There no meaningful updates from VMS
- Manager assigned to case unavailable when I ring
- Promised callbacks don’t materialiseMeanwhile I've received 5 penalty charges for unpaid #Ulez charges, indicating my car has been driven without my knowledge

#Transport for #London is cracking down on repeat #ULEZ penalty charge evaders, who are behind 94% of all unpaid fines. Between January and June 2025, £16.5m was recovered through enforcement, including seizing over 530 vehicles. Auctions raised more than £285k. TfL is stepping up efforts using data-sharing, court action and civil enforcement to recover debts, which in some cases could lead to bankruptcy. While 97% of vehicles now meet ULEZ standards, a small number continue to ignore the rules. #TfL urges anyone struggling financially to get in touch, as support like payment plans is available. Auto Pay is encouraged to avoid fines. A pilot is also running to offer early help to vulnerable people before enforcement kicks in. The focus is on compliance, not revenue, with all net income reinvested in public transport. TfL is also working with the Government to make debt recovery fairer and harder to evade.

The Mayor of #London has hailed the success of the #ULEZ scrappage scheme, which removed or upgraded over 53,000 older, more polluting vehicles – 35,094 cars and 17,964 vans – cutting emissions and improving air quality. Outer London saw 88% of funding, with #Croydon and #Hillingdon leading on applications. The scheme promoted sustainable travel, with more walking and bus use reported. Over 680 vehicles were donated for humanitarian aid in #Ukraine. Emissions savings include 160 tonnes NOx, 8.5 tonnes PM2.5, and 33,400 tonnes CO2 – equal to powering 1,000 homes for a year. ULEZ compliance now exceeds 97%, up from 39% in 2017. London’s air quality is improving faster than elsewhere in England, with the most deprived communities seeing the greatest benefits. The £210m scheme remains the largest of its kind in the UK.

Two young women at my work went on a weekend shopping trip from #Suffolk to #Thurrock with their kids - one was driving a petrol VW Polo, the other a diesel SUV (Ford Kuga).
The lass in the diesel car wrong-laned a spiral roundabout coming off #M25 and ended up briefly going into Outer London and entering #ULEZ - she ended up with about £30 in charges but just paid them without whinging and blaming Sadiq Khan etc - there definitely seems to be a gender difference in how folk react to ULEZ (although its also the case folk round here don't always keep up with what is going on in London, a friend didn't realise where the boundary was as until last year he'd never even driven on the M25!)

Surprise! #London's tax on #polluting #vehicles made everyone much healthier
Two of the most dangerous aspects of vehicle #emissions – nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for #smog formation, and PM2.5, which are tiny particles that irritate the lungs – have dropped by almost a third compared to if #ULEZ hadn’t been implemented, in only the few years that the policy has been in place.
99% of air quality monitors around London have showed a reduction in #pollution!
