  1. Last year I thought I saw a newt larvae at the brownfield site near where I live but I wasn’t confident in my ID but tonight we finally saw some adults in the same location! They haven’t been recorded here before so of course I’ll submit my record.

  2. So I wound up with a nasty sinus infection, because of course I did. And the doctor prescribed an antibiotic that’s tearing my guts apart, because of course they did.
I accidentally took one of the many weird spur trails, only to have to backtrack and beeline back uphill to find the trail I should have been on. Other than that, it’s a cool trail.
I could use a bit of better luck, or less misfortune, here. I can’t really afford shenanigans right now. #running #trailrunning #whiny SelfPity

  3. From old bathtub to wormery. The bricks and bits of old paving are holding down a fine mesh screen in a vain attempt to keep the rats out. The plug hole is blocked up with a piece of paving and a large pebble beneath it leaving no gaps.

This replaces my last large wormery made from a garden storage chest left by the previous owners. It gave a couple of years of use but fell apart. Hopefully this will be a bit more sturdy!

  4. I didn't think it was possible to think more highly of Aesha, but the most recent episode of Below Deck Down Under (S2 E6 "All Wrong") reveals her to be not just smart, funny and super likable but fierce, too. Major points for the producers, too. 💪
*Edited to credit the Captain with swift, decisive action as well.

  5. Greater bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris) at the local lake, with a bonus moth that I didn't realise was there until looking at the photos afterwards.

    Another lesson from Israel:
A general strike may be the only tool we have to protect democracy when an authoritarian is in power. Unions must use their considerable power to lead by protecting democracy everywhere, because once authoritarians wrest power from the judiciary, democratic power is lost for the whole of society.

As you’ve said many times, “Welcome to hyperendemicity!”
We could have acted to prevent much of this struggle by changing indoor air standards, encouraging the use of proper respirators in public spaces and keeping vaccinations current…yet here we are. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Wholeheartedly agree. We set up a monthly donation to mstdn.ca almost a year ago, because we enjoy our community here. If everyone donated a little, we could be assured our community will be here for years to come.

  13. Re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird and finishing it in one sitting—again.

It remains one of the most challenged books in the U.S., largely due to its portrayal of race and injustice.

That discomfort is precisely the point.

Literature that endures tends to ask questions people would rather avoid.

  14. This is a great story! 😀

My dad was a mechanic, so he taught me lots — but he also started a community college course in basic auto repair specifically for women (in the 1960’s!)

  15. Tonight’s 1 hour HIIT exposed more fatigue than I felt going into it. Ah, well... Tomorrow’s a recovery day. Thursday: a beefy uphill interval workout in the bitter cold. 🥶

Mad respect for people who dig doing burpees. The arthritis in my lumbar hates ‘em. #crosstraining #trailrunning

  16. Hm. HRV is even lower today, even after a good night’s rest. Maybe my body’s fighting a bug or something. A few of the girls at work have been sick recently. #training #crosstraining

  17. I planned to do an hour of HIIT tonight but started moving and damn… It felt like heavy going, tough to breathe well, fatigued.

Finished the first 32 min. set and called it a day. Checked my overnight HRV and sure enough, it was reduced. Not sure why. #crosstraining

  18. My coach said I could do whatever I wanted for cross-training today, so I decided it might be fun to hit the pool for some laps.

Holy smokes... I swam 325m. What possessed me? It's been, like, 10 years since I swam. It's a shame I had to go to work afterwards, 'cause I needed a lie-down. 😂 I felt like a famished zombie, and had the shakes. But my back feels better with that no impact core workout.
I'll do it again. Just not before work. 😅

  19. I would love to claim that I’ve gotten so in tune with myself that I could hold such a stable zone 2 workout. The truth is, I learned how to set an intensity target for each workout (in my watch) just yesterday.
I can honestly say that I am putting in all the work I possibly can, preparing for my upcoming 50K. Running, riding, strength training, pilates and yoga. It’s all there. I think a real coach would be damned proud of me.

  20. It's inconsequential, but I had to break my 45 min. HIIT ride into two workouts after 9 minutes because I didn't trust the HR readings from my chest strap (Avg HR 88 bpm? No). Switched over to the wrist HR sensor for the remainder.
I know I got the benefit of that workout but it still bums me out when my watch doesn't capture it.

Anyway, second workout for the day is done. #cycling #training #CrossTraining

  21. If you’re ever in the mood to isolate weaknesses in your legs, you might try single-leg cycling. Give each leg enough time to fatigue. Feel the burn! 😅

Right leg: jerkier motion with weakness in hamstring and glutes.

Left leg: smooth motion, with weakness in quads and hip flexor.

I’m guessing that compensatory swing from posterior to anterior chain is the source of that wobble that clears up if I focus on driving my knees while running. Hm. #cycling #crosstraining #running
