  12. W3 Prompt #212: Wea’ve Written Weekly

    Intro

    Dear friends,

Welcome to our W3 Poetry Prompt, which goes live on Wednesdays at The Skeptic’s Kaddish.

You may click here for a fuller explanation of W3; but here’s the ‘tldr’ version:

    Part I

The main ingredient of W3 is a weekly poem written by a Poet of the Week (PoW), which participants read before participating in the prompt.

    Part II

The second ingredient is a writing guideline (or two) provided by the PoW. Guidelines may include, but are not limited to: word counts, poetic forms, inclusion of specific words, and use of particular poetic devices.

    Part III

After five days, when the prompt closes, the PoW shall select one participant’s poem as the W3 prompt for the following week, and its author becomes the next PoW.

    Simple enough, right?

Kindly note: All entries for the W3 poetry prompt must be the original work of the submitting author. AI-generated poetry is not permitted.

Okie dokie ~ Let’s do this thing!

    I. The prompt poem:

    ‘brick-breath’ by AJ Wilson

    raised from clay and sweat
i lean beneath green tangled vines
    my mouth -
    shaped almost like a question
    keeps darkness folded carefully inside

    once
    barefoot children tumbled through me
    laughing mud and apple-juice
their shadows jingled brighter than rain
    lovers pressed initials
into my ribs of fired earth
while birds stitched afternoon above me

    now
silence roots itself at my feet
seasons drop feathers and brittle leaves
    while i
    watch sunlight fracture
    through wild branches

    still
    i stand - openly closed
    foxes sleeping within my shadow
    each dusk
    sunlight breaks in thin pieces
and silence enters wearing the smell
    of vanished gardens

    II. Ange’s prompt: One-syllable challenge

For this week’s W3 challenge, writers are invited to capture a dramatic moment in just a handful of lines — a storm breaking, a glass shattering, a door slamming, a sudden realization, or any instant where something changes sharply or unexpectedly.

You may write in any poetic form, with the following restrictions:

    1. Your poem must be between 5 and 8 lines long.
    2. Every single word in the poem must be one syllable long.
    3. You are allowed one multi-syllable word — but it must appear as the very last word of the poem.

Have fun with the tension this creates. Sometimes the smallest words carry the greatest force.

III. Submit: Click on ‘Mister Linky’ below

In order to participate and share a poem, open up this blog post, outside of the WordPress reader. At the bottom, just below these words, you will see a small rectangular graphic with the words ‘Mr Linky’. Click on that to submit.

Submissions are open for 5 days, until Monday, May 25, 10:00 AM (GMT+2)

    Last week’s W3 poem

This week’s W3 prompt poem (above), composed by Ange, was written in response to last week’s W3 prompt poem, which Hope wrote:

    ‘Flood Tide’ by Srijita (Hope)

    Ma,
    your love
    rages loud
    through all your loss.
    It does not whimper.
    It does not hesitate.
How does your heart carry on
knowing the softness it will miss?
Your strength swells, a river in flood tide.
Ma, your love rages loud through all your loss.

There's all these people that wanna do a quick and easy import from Twoetter -> Mastodon and bring w/them their fake popularity and perceived follower accounts. NOT GONNA HAPPEN ON MASTODON. IF you do this, you will be outed as a POSER.

    Big tip for future inference makers: do not join (or < join >) servers like mas+.to which are moderated doing the same thing Twoetter got rich doing;

I would never let a mas.+to user interview me about anything technical. Why would anyone with a brain trust a site promoting the popularity of already spoiled

There's a similar parallel in some of those #bollywood stories, I know, money breeds corruption everywhere it is used as a weapon. And I told everybody yesterday how well that doesn't work.

  20. I have broadly observed that many tend to believe that ActivityPub-based Fediverse is associated with liberal or left-liberal political discourse. This perception may be due to user demographics and community norms or guidelines.

It is not fair to carry such a discernment in one's mind. The design and architecture of ActivityPub based Fediverse are politically neutral. However, the way it is implemented and used by different platforms and communities can reflect varying political ideologies. The Fediverse is a collection of interconnected social networking platforms that use ActivityPub, and these platforms can cater to diverse communities with different political beliefs and values.

It is important to re-emphasize that the Fediverse is a disparate ecosystem with a wide range of users and viewpoints. While there may be a prevalent perception of a liberal or left-liberal discourse, it does not mean that all users or instances within the Fediverse adhere to those ideologies.

  21. My Understanding of History

    [Part 1/3]

The subject History interests me. My understanding of history is changing over time. Earlier, I believed that history neither forgives nor forgets. I thought every action of mine creates a physical or mental effect on myself, on society, and on civilization. These effects may be small or not visible during my lifetime. I may not know how they develop in future. I may not see the chain of results that follows from my actions. I may not learn whether any action of mine acted as a catalyst in later events. I believed that my actions cannot be undone or erased. I thought my actions leave permanent marks.

With time, my view has changed. I now think I understand these aspects better, and I present that understanding below. I am still learning.

History does not think or judge. It does not forgive or remember. It is not a conscious force. It is a record of human actions. This record depends on what is kept, what is lost, and who controls the narrative.

Human actions create consequences that may continue beyond one lifetime. Many effects appear small or remain unseen at first. Some enter a chain of causes and results that develops over time.

These effects are often uncertain. They may influence future events in indirect ways. Actions interact with conditions beyond individual control. Outcomes may appear later, change form, or grow in scale.

  22. Where the voice of justice weeps in silent despair (Post 2/2)

While the protests by junior doctors received excellent response from the citizens of West Bengal, rest of India India, what caught ny eager attention was the
movement that got initiated after Rimjhim Sinha’s call for “Reclaim the Night” on social media. Her Facebook post, on 10th August 2024, inviting people to join her near a bus stand in Jadavpur, attracted a larger-than-expected crowd. The protests transcended local boundaries, with thousands of women and common citizens taking to the streets across West Bengal, demanding justice for the raped and murdered junior doctor. It also spread in other Indian states and even in the USA. A large number of the participants included first time protestors and senior citizens. The “Reclaim the Night” campaign, which happened twice during August and September 2024, was described by Rimjhim Sinha as a new freedom struggle for women, symbolized by a viral poster of a red hand holding a crescent moon. This imagery conveyed a sense of defiance and reclaiming public spaces, traditionally perceived as unsafe for women. In a Facebook post (on 4th October 2024) she, while always supporting the movement and protests of the Junior Doctors, re-emphasized the following priorities for state level reforms.

    1. Punishment shall be ensured to all the culprits involved in the rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.

    2. All workplaces, including medical centres, require secure rest rooms and crèches for women.

    3. Public transport shall be made available in Kolkata and capital cities at night.

    4. School curricula should include gender-equality education, sexuality education and legal education.

    5. Victim blaming shall be brought under the law.

    6. Impartial and transparent Internal Complaint Committee or Local Complaint Committee shall exist in all workplaces and related areas.

    7. All work related areas shall have toilets for women and people of marginalized gender-sexuality.

    8. Shelter and alternative income shall be arranged at the district level for women victims of domestic violence.

The above mentioned issues are all applicable to every state of India. Though these movements attracted massive mindshare and fervour, I am not sure how much it helped to meet expectations. I also failed to understand whether the process of investigation and delivering justice actually got accelerated to a desirable extent. The movement obviously did not spread in other states of India at a larger scale. As on today, we are still awaiting justice for the doctor whose death again shook our conscience. Was there enough reporting by media in English and regional languages except Bengali? The next steps of the movements are not yet clear.

    I borrow
words from William Radice’s English translation of Rabindranath Tagore’s poem "Prosno" (Question) to conclude my post.

And meanwhile I see secretive hatred murdering the helpless
    Under cover of night;
And Justice weeping silently and furtively at power misused
    No hope of redress.

  23. Economic Systems and Human Welfare
    A Layman's Perspective

    [Part 2/2]

Major economic systems [4] such as capitalism, socialism, and communism - that can be strongly correlated to political systems [5] predominantly function to sustain power equations. Power, whether manifested in military, economic, or administrative forms, inherently prioritizes self-preservation, influence, or control. Surveillance systems, while often justified as instruments for security or efficiency, may systematically infringe upon individual rights when deemed necessary. Capitalism frequently results in the concentration of wealth and influence among a select few, as evidenced by India's escalating income disparity [6]. Socialism and communism, despite their ideological commitment to equity, have historically been appropriated by authoritarian regimes to consolidate power. Nevertheless, it would be inaccurate to assert that such systems entirely lack of welfare motivations, which may emerge from political strategies or vote-bank considerations. Welfare programs, even when politically motivated, can positively impact millions of lives; India's Ujjwala scheme, for instance, has provided cooking gas connections to nearly 100 million households [7], notwithstanding its electoral significance. Similarly, international aid programs from powerful nations often carry strategic conditions that remain unknown to the general populace.

In conclusion, those occupying positions of governance and administrative authority rarely implement welfare measures purely out of benevolence, compassion, or kindness, independent of electoral considerations and political strategies. Rather, such initiatives are typically designed to secure their own future prospects. As with most generalizations, exceptions to this pattern do exist.

  24. Why we need more Zero-knowledge tools?

    [Part 1 of 2]

Zero-knowledge tools (often called zero-knowledge encryption or zero-knowledge architecture services) are privacy-focused apps and platforms where the service provider has zero knowledge of the actual data. Even if they are subpoenaed, hacked, or compelled by authorities (relevant in India under DPDP [1] or other laws), they literally cannot access or hand over your readable content. This goes beyond basic End-to-End Encryption (E2EE). E2EE protects data in transit between users, but the provider might still hold keys or access metadata. Zero-knowledge ensures the provider is completely blind to the content [2].

Popular zero-knowledge tools are Proton mail, Tuta mail, Standard Notes, Notesnook, Proton Drive, Bitwarden, Filen.io, Simplex Chat, Threema (banned in India since May 2023) etc.

WhatsApp, with fully visible metadata to Meta, Gmail, Outlook, Telegram and Arattai are not zero knowledge tools. WhatsApp heavily advertise their E2EE features as sufficient for privacy, often misleading Indian users into believing basic E2EE equals full protection while downplaying metadata risks and provider access.

Signal prioritizes usable, strong E2EE with excellent metadata protection over pure zero-knowledge. It's "privacy by design + policy," is not absolute zero-knowledge. Many experts still call it the gold standard for messaging.

In India lack of awareness, network affect, convenience, habit, and zero cost keep WhatsApp, Gmail, and Google Drive dominant. Zero-knowledge tools offer stronger privacy but demand more effort and paid subscriptions or one time fee for comfortable and carefree usage in a price-sensitive market like India. This limits mass adoption and keeps strong privacy tools largely confined to tech-savvy or high-risk users.

  25. Why this discrimination by selling less healthy products in low-income countries like India?

Products sold by companies, including Nestle, PepsiCo, and Unilever, in India and other low-income countries were assessed as part of a global index and found to be less healthy than those in high-income countries, as per a Reuters report.
The companies, among the biggest food and beverage MNCs, were assessed to, on average, sell less healthy products in poorer countries, according to the global index published by the non-profit group Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI).
The index was first released in 2021, but this year is the first time it split the assessment into low and high-income countries.
