  1. India’s Aadhaar-inspired digital identity model is now being adopted or explored by more than 25 nations. This is not the magical solution it's being peddled as.

Institutions are facing this issue where they need to verify certain attributes about their users (i.e. age, residency, eligibility, licensure). Their solution seems to just be, "tell me exactly who you are, or we won't give you access to this resource," and that's absurd. An institution should be able to verify that I am over 18 without learning my identity, and it should be able to verify that I live somewhere without receiving a permanent identifier it can retain into perpetuity.

Systems like Aadhaar are presented as privacy-preserving ways to prove who you are. While these systems include protections and regulations (i.e. limited disclosures), they still contribute to a system capable of identifying an individual across banks, telecom companies, healthcare providers, employers, social platforms, and government agencies.

And this is a system that can be further weakened by bad implementation, policy change, security breach, policy loopholes, or abuse of power. As with Flock, we need to be careful of the systems we build public dependence on.

I don't want my identity to be converted into machine-readable infrastructure around which governments and corporations can build.
