On August 25, 2017, with the mentality of wiping out the Rohingya from the world, they [Myanmar Military] committed such inhuman torture on the Rohingya that they committed genocide, intending to wipe out an ethnic group. Burma deprived the Rohingya of education, medical care, and justice for many years, and erased their ethnic culture. Not only did they write a chapter of genocide by killing the Rohingya, but they also wiped out all elements of their culture. The level of torture against them has not decreased yet. The seedbed that the Burmese army created is still ongoing, the new perpetrator [AA] killing Rohingya civilians, children. Rohingya are still looking for a safe place to save their lives and are still taking risks to find a better life.

Therefore, the Rohingya need your support. Not hatred towards the Rohingya, but each of us should work to facilitate the path to their rights without seeing them as dehumanizing. Please treat them as humans, talk for them. They need hope, they need your solidarity.

The title of FT report indicates what’s going on there. It’s one of those political situation where doing something or doing nothing both has costs but no apparent benefit.

If Stermer had showed up for a meeting, it could’ve brought back the Tulip Corruption issue into public focus and the issue of illicit flows from foreign countries. Now that he hasn’t, there’ll be plenty of speculations around why he didn’t, which could now be spin anyway his political enemies.

I can think of three reasons, which might’ve contributed to this.

1. Britain needs the corruption money to keep its economy running. As some commentator said before Britain has now become the Butler to the World, It’s the country where the Russian Oligarchs and many others parked their money, if you remember. Those beautiful houses on Kensington or the plush apartments wouldn’t sell themselves. Going hard on the BAL money could’ve affected that those illicit flows from coming in.

2. Stermer’s own political future would’ve been back on public focus. His approval ratings could’ve taken a hit. There’s also the issue of Bangu voters and his future electoral prospects. Whether it’s his PM position or future as an MP, both could’ve been jeopardized to some extent.

3. The meeting would’ve been provided Younus with the executive nod of approval to what he wants the Brits to do but it wouldn’t have helped Stermer in anyway possible. The costs were too high for some photo ops. External image isn’t the first thing on Stermer’s mind right now. He’s better off allowing the agencies take care of the issues.

Given the options available to him, I think Stermer took the safest route (for now). It’s the internal dynamics of Labor Party and British politics in general to take it as far as they want to take it.

If Stermer had showed up for a meeting, it could’ve brought back the Tulip Corruption issue into public focus and the issue of illicit flows from foreign countries. Now that he hasn’t, there’ll be plenty of speculations around why he didn’t, which could now be spin anyway his political enemies.

I can think of three reasons, which might’ve contributed to this.

1. Britain needs the corruption money to keep its economy running. As some commentator said before Britain has now become the Butler to the World, It’s the country where the Russian Oligarchs and many others parked their money, if you remember. Those beautiful houses on Kensington or the plush apartments wouldn’t sell themselves. Going hard on the BAL money could’ve affected that those illicit flows from coming in.

2. Stermer’s own political future would’ve been back on public focus. His approval ratings could’ve taken a hit. There’s also the issue of Bangu voters and his future electoral prospects. Whether it’s his PM position or future as an MP, both could’ve been jeopardized to some extent.

3. The meeting would’ve been provided Younus with the executive nod of approval to what he wants the Brits to do but it wouldn’t have helped Stermer in anyway possible. The costs were too high for some photo ops. External image isn’t the first thing on Stermer’s mind right now. He’s better off allowing the agencies take care of the issues.

Given the options available to him, I think Stermer took the safest route (for now). It’s the internal dynamics of Labor Party and British politics in general to take it as far as they want to take it.

Younus will probably has his assurances without a meeting with the PM and royal blessings from his old friend. Stermer will probably hope that his enemies let this one pass without much fuss. Full marks to FT for bringing and contextualizing it to public notice.

আমি লালবাগ থাকতাম। আমাদের ওখানে রাশেদ শিকদার নামে এক ভয়ানক সন্ত্রাসী বাস করতো। তার ভয়ে এলাকার মানুষ তটস্থ থাকতো। এক রাতে স্বপ্নে দেখলাম, আদালতে আসামীর কাঠগড়ায় দাঁড়িয়ে আছি। আমাকে উকিল জিজ্ঞেস করছে-

-আপনার নাম রাশেদ ?
-আজ্ঞে ঠিক বলেছেন।(আমার বন্ধুরা এই নামেই ডাকে)
-আপনে লালবাগ থাকেন ?
-একদম ঠিক কথা।
-লালবাগে রাশেদ শিকদার নামে এক সন্ত্রাসী থাকে ?
-আরেব্বাপ আপনে জানলেন কেম্নে ?
-আপ্নের গায়ের রঙ কালো, রাশেদ শিকদারের গায়ের রঙও কালো।
-কী বলেন ? এত মিল ?
-আপনে চারতলা দালানের ২য় তলায় থাকেন। সে ও দ্বিতীয় তলায় থাকে।
-কস কি মমিন ? এত মিলে কেম্নে ?
-এর পরও কি আপনে বলবেন যে, আপনে রাশেদ শিকদার নন ?

আমি পুরা তব্দা খাইয়া গেছি। কী কমু বুঝতে পারতাছি না। ব্যাটা আমারে রাশেদ শিকদার বানাইতে চায় কেন ? এরই মইদ্যে দেখলাম চার-পাঁচজন লোক একে একে সাক্ষীর জায়গায় দাঁড়িয়ে আমাকে রাশেদ শিকদার বইলা গেল। বিচারক আমারে কইলো-
-তোমার কিছু বলার আছে ? না থাকলে আমরা তোমারে ফাঁসীর আদেশ দিমু।

আমি কাইন্দা কইলাম-
-হুজুর এইটা কী কন ! আমারে কেন ফাঁসী দিবেন। জীবনের কোন সাধ-আহ্লাদ এহনো পুরা করি নাই। বিয়া-টিয়া করিনাই। এত তাড়াতাড়ি মইরা গেলে কেম্নে চলবো।
-খুন করার সময় এসব মনে আছিল না?
-কন কি ? কে খুন করছে ?
-তুমি, মানে রাশেদ শিকদার এ পর্যন্ত ৫ জনরে খুন করছো। সে জন্য তোমারে ফাঁসী দেয়া হইবে।
-আপ্নারে কে কইলো আমি রাশেদ শিকদার?
-রাশেদ শিকদারের সাথে তোমার এত এত মিল, তার উপর ৪/৫ জনে তোমারে রাশেদ শিকদার বইলা চিহ্নিত করলো। তুমি রাশেদ শিকদার না হইয়া কই যাও ?
-কী কন ৪/৫ জন। আমি ৪/৫ হাজার মানুষ হাজির করতে পারুম যারা কইবো যে আমি রাশেদ শিকদার না।
-এত সাক্ষী হাজির করার টাইম আমার নাই। তুমি বড়জোর ৪/৫ জন সাক্ষী হাজির করতে পার।
-কন কী ? এইডা জীবন মৃত্যুর ব্যাপার। এত কম সাক্ষী হইল চলবে কেন ?
-তোমার বিরুদ্ধে ৪/৫ জন সাক্ষী হাজির করা হইছে। অতএব তোমার পক্ষেও এর চেয়ে বেশি সাক্ষী হাজির করতে পারবা না।
-এইডা কি কইলেন ? আমার বিরুদ্ধে তারা টাকা দিয়া ৪/৫ জন লোক কিনছে। আর ঘটনা মিথ্যা দেইখা আমার বিরুদ্ধে বেশি সাক্ষী পায় নাই। কিন্তু আমার পক্ষে হাজার হাজার মানুষ সাক্ষ্য দিবে যে আমি রাশেদ শিকদার না।

বিচারক আমার কোন কথা শুনিলেন না। আমার পক্ষে যারা হাজির হইতে চাইছিল তাদের দুইজনকে আসল রাশেদ শিকদার গুম কইরা ফেললো। ৩ জন আমার পক্ষে সাক্ষী দিল।আমি আরো সাক্ষী আনার আবেদন জানাইলাম। কিন্তু বিচারক নাকি রাশেদ শিকদারের মাল খাইয়া টাল হইয়া ছিল। তাহার মন টলিল না। আমাকে রাশেদ শিকদার হিসেবে সাব্যস্ত করিয়া মৃত্যুদন্ডে দন্ডিত করা হলো।

দণ্ড দিবার সময় বিচারক বলিলো, আমরা কি আলাভোলা এই সাধারণ মানুষটার বিচার করতাছি? না আমরা তা করতাছি না। আমরা এক ভয়ংকর খুনীর বিচার করতাছি। আমার চোখের সামনে দাঁড়ানো এই সাধারণ মানুষটার আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকা ভয়ানক সন্ত্রাসীর বিচার করতাছি।

পরদিন খবরের কাগজে আমার মৃত্যুদণ্ডের খবর ছাপা হলো। অনেকে মিস্টি বিতরণ করিলেন।পত্রিকায় ছাপা হওয়া আমার ছবিতে কেউ কেউ মুত্র ত্যাগ করিলেন। অনেকে ওই পত্রিকা টয়লেট পেপার হিসেবে ব্যবহার করিলেন। কিন্তু তাহাতে আমার জীবন ফিরিল না। ফাঁসীতে ঝুলার আগে আমার শেষ ইচ্ছা জানতে চাওয়া হইলো। আমি কইলাম আমি একটা গল্প বলবো। তারা তাজ্জব হইয়া বলল, বেশ তোমার গল্প বলো। আমি শুরু করিলাম-
-মারিও পুজো নামক এক ভদ্রলোক গডফাদার নামে একটা উপন্যাস লিখেছিল। ওই উপন্যাসের গডফাদারের ছেলে মাইকেল কর্লিয়নি একজন করাপ্ট পুলিশ অফিসার সহ দুইজনকে খুন করেছিল। বিচারের সময় টাকার বিনিময়ে মাইকেলের জায়গায় অন্য লোককে ফাঁসীতে ঝুলানো হয়।এতে ফাঁসীতে ঝুলা লোকটারও সায় ছিল। আমার দু:খ হইলো রাশেদ শিকদারের জায়গায় আমি ঝুলতাছি, কিন্তু এতে আমার কোন সায় নাই।

তাহারা কী বুঝিলো জানি না। খুব দু:খ দু:খ গলায় বলিলো, তবে যাইহোক, এই দেশে বাইচা থাকার চেয়ে মইরা যাওয়াই ভালা। তুমি আসলে মইরা গিয়া বাইচা যাইতাছো। তারপর তারা আমার গলায় ফাঁসীর দড়ি ঝুলাইতাছে। আমার তখন খুব জোরে একটা হাঁচি আসলো। হাঁচিতে আমার ঘুম ভাইংগা গেল। দেখি সারা শরীর ঘামে ভিজা।

আমার তখন নিজেরে জামাতের কেন্দ্রীয় নেতা মনে হইলো। পার্থক্য খালি এতটুকু যে, আমি স্বপ্নের মইদ্যে বিচার বিভাগীয় হত্যার মুখোমুখি হইছিলাম। আর বেচারারা বাস্তব জীবনে ফাঁসীতে ঝুলতাছে।
