#StormWatch #StormBoelo: the wind blew so hard that my kitchen window is not quite as wide open as normal. My beard went briefly sideways when I took some rubbish out to the bins. We are clearly doomed.

The Pose at the Teller Window
A customer can now hand an AI agent the keys to a bank account. Their instruction can be as casual as “help me pay my bills.” The agent enters with valid credentials, and the bank sees an ordinary login. Their immediate concern may be the electric bill. The agent may encounter a new payee or a low balance and make a choice the customer never discussed. Once the money moves, the bank has a password and a session log. The customer has a memory of what they meant. Those records do not necessarily agree. […]https://bolesblogs.com/2026/10/25/the-pose-at-the-teller-window/

This reminds me of one of my favourite things to do with my kids. Find a stream, move stones around. Build dams, don't, it doesn't matter. Play doesn't have to have an external purpose.

For a discussion elsewhere, I did some back-of-the-envelope calculations about the relative performance of disks and CPUs since the early 2000s. The number of retired instructions per byte of random disk reads between an early 2000s machine and today has changed by at least four orders of magnitude (possibly six, depending on exactly what you're measuring).
I knew disks had become faster, but that's an enormous change. If you wrote something 25 years ago that was entirely disk-I/O-bound and used 5% of the CPU, running today it wouldn't even be close to 1% of disk bandwidth usage but would be pegging the core at 100%. Even making it multithreaded and getting a perfect linear speedup wouldn't have come close to 1% disk-bandwidth usage.
The delta is less pronounced for large sequential reads.

This is wrong. It is homophobic. It is a cynical attempt to manipulate voters by appealing to their bigotry with information about a dead man that has no relevance to the election. It is no better than the ad by Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio. #politics #homophobia #LindsayGraham #Hypocrisy

#ArnaudMontebourg est le seul à s’être montré courageux et #patriote lors de l’affaire #Alstom.
C’était, à l’époque, la plus grande affaire de corruption de l’histoire de la Ve République.
Hommage à lui.

Is there a good solution for TLS certs for consumer LAN devices? My ISP’s router recently moved to requiring TLS, but I access it via it’s IP address and it doesn’t have a TLS cert for an IP address (is it even possible to get a TLS cert for a private IP address?) and so the main change is that my browser no longer autocompletes the admin password (for good reasons: don’t autocomplete passwords in TOS sessions with invalid certs!).

Reminder to people who have international meetings: the next week is George W Bush Golfing Time. The USA and Europe had an agreement to move clocks at the same time, so the time difference remained constant. George W Bush decided he wanted a few weeks more golfing time, so unilaterally moved the USA’s Daylight Saving Time. This move remains in effect so there are a few weeks of annoying disruption each year.
I made the mistake of flying the first time this happened, which is how I knew about it: the airlines were unprepared and sold me tickets on two flights where the time change meant that my slightly tight 45-minute change turned into a -15 minute connection time (fortunately the second flight was on a route they flew every two hours so I was only an hour late)l

What is Tokyo's most crowded train, you might think to ask...
Tanner's got your back. Like the title says, it's not what you think.
He got a bad weather day, but this video hits a lot of Tokyo must-see things, including the Arakawa tram line (YAY!) and a close point between the Sumida River (which used to be where the Arakawa River flowed) and the new (man-made) Arakawa River. To say nothing of an automated commuter train I hadn't been aware of.

I remain mystified that Mansur Brown isn't a bigger deal. He released his fourth album a couple weeks ago and it is a beautiful autumn listen. floating through late-night clouds with Prince-level guitar emotions, vocal ghosts, and touches of British jazz.

@GPJohnston That's great!
Here in Ottawa (45.5N), I'm reluctant to plant garlic for another week or two, because I don't want it to sprout prematurely. We have cool nights, but we're still getting daytime temperatures into the high teens (Celsius) some days, so the soil gets quite warm.
