‘Too little, too late’: UK’s Covid response
Remember the chaos in March 2020? Other European countries were in lockdown but Johnson said the #UK should take it on the chin. Advisers like Whitty, Edmunds & Vallance initially advocated herd immunity & nudge theory. 20,00 lives could have been saved if lockdown had happened a week earlier. Lockdown took place again because warnings were not heeded & kids lost out on school

are still seeking justice. There is a lot of violence and tension in western Tigray and also Amhara and Oromia. Western govts, the UN, humanitarian agencies and also the African Union could have done much more to prevent the war, which some consider a genocide, and also done more to avert the mass hunger and starvation. Lessons should have been learnt but we see again see the same mistakes repeated in Gaza and Sudan. #Famine #Hunger #Genocide #TigrayWar #Ethiopia

It's five years since the brutal Tigray war which led to about 800,000 people dead, over 100,000 women raped as well as mass starvation and famine. For over two years, Ethiopian & Eritrean forces imposed a full-scale blockade, including a total shutdown of banking & internet services as well as basic medical, food & humanitarian supplies. While the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, brokered an end to the siege & fighting, there remains mass internal displacement & most of the victims #Tigray #Ethiopia

Absolutely amazing day at the Triennale di Milano at the event “The Space of Inequality” which brought together researchers and city leaders for a series of conversations and dialogues. I spoke at the first session on socio-environmental & climate inequalities.
An impressive exhibition on Inequalities with exhibits on cities, mobility, citizenship, microbes, bacteria & much more. A great way to spend World Urban Day

Public ownership of England’s water companies could cost close to zero, says thinktank
Govt could use a process known as special administration to take over failing Thames Water. The figure of £99bn is based on an estimate from a thinktank paid for by water companies.
The analysis from another think tank 'Common Wealth' shows that it matters who is framing & costing problems & their solutions.

On #WorldOceanDay, new co-authored paper that calls for rethinking development in coastal zones, away from extractive models and toward approaches that respect local knowledge, ecological interdependence, and justice.
As climate change threatens our coasts, we must listen to and amplify the voices of communities who have long lived in harmony with the ocean -

"From a media prize with a dubious pedigree to the horrors of Gaza, the establishment forgets and remembers what suits it best"
Excellent piece on "German refusal to confront the depths of societal entanglement with state violence and genocide. Some of Germany’s wealthiest families – including Flick, Porsche, Bahlsen and Stoschek – built their empires on Nazi collaboration and forced labour. "

Op-ed for #WorldWaterDay2025. Follow Keynes’ advice from 1941- wealth tax on the super-rich can help fund social spending & defense. World’s Largest Religious Gathering Becomes Trans-Inclusive Despite Controversies
No big fan of these big religious gatherings and the notion that sins can be washed away, yet worth noting that India, and South Asia, have generally been far more trans-inclusive than the West
