Two immigration judges who ruled against the Trump administration in the deportation cases of pro-Palestinian university students have been fired by the Department of Justice.
The New York Times reported over the weekend that the justice department had terminated six judges,
including Roopal Patel and Nina Froes, who oversaw deportation proceedings against Rümeysa Öztürk and Mohsen Mahdawi,
two students who were arrested last year as part of Trump’s campaign against the Gaza protest movement.
In an interview with the Guardian, Patel said she did not view her dismissal as “directly retaliatory” for any one case.
She said it fit within a broader pattern of the administration dismissing judges near the end of their probationary term,
particularly those who have experience representing immigrants in court.
“I think there’s a broader agenda of trying to reshape the immigration bench to be more reflective of the political agenda of the administration,” Patel said.
The Biden administration appointed both Patel and Froes to the bench in May 2024, and both had previously worked in immigration defense.

Calls are growing to release Palestinian protester #LeqaaKordia, who was arrested at a 2024 Columbia U. #Gaza solidarity protest. The charges were dismissed, but when she went to her #ICE check-in this past March, she was arrested and immediately sent to a detention center in Texas, where she has been held ever since. Although Columbia U. student protesters like #MohsenMahdawi and #MahmoudKhalil have been freed from ICE detention, “her case sort of fell between the cracks,” says Laila El-Haddad, Palestinian writer and journalist from Gaza, who just visited Kordia. She also criticizes the #Trump administration’s effort to “crack down on any dissent and... to weaponize immigration law to silence dissent and to criminalize free speech, especially when that speech relates to #Palestine.”

Mohsen Mahdawi, the 34-year-old #Palestinian student and #US permanent resident, returned to #ColumbiaUniversity on Tuesday and vowed to continue speaking out.
“They have failed to silence me, and in fact, now I am more outspoken than before, and I will continue to work for peace and justice. I do this work not for myself alone – I do this for the future of children, whether they are Palestinians or #Israelis,” he told the Guardian on Tuesday in his first interview since stepping back on to campus to begin his graduate studies.
