  1. Thinking of the bank holiday next week, it has often been observed here in the UK that it's a long time to go between bank holidays between late August and Christmas, and that we really need one on October as well to fill the gap.

    But what to celebrate?

Well, consider this. I have just learned that "World Pasta Day" is on 25 October. Exactly half way between the August bank holiday and Christmas! How amazing is that?

    Let's make this happen!

  2. I've heard it said that last week's summit in Alaska didn't achieve anything.

That's not true. It's completely distracted the media's attention from talking about the Epstein files.

For one of the participants, that is probably the main thing he wanted to achieve from the summit.

  3. Any politicians using VJ day to say how important it is that we never forget the sacrifices that the wartime generation made, while simultaneously allowing an actual genocide to proceed can get in the fucking sea.

  9. If someone invented a time machine and transported Yvette Cooper back to 1912 and managed to keep her job as Home Secretary, she would have proscribed the Suffragettes as a terrorist organisation.

And then women wouldn't have got the vote or been allowed to stand for Parliament and then Cooper would never have been Home Secretary in the first place and OMG IT'S A PARADOX.

Gosh, time travel is complicated, isn't it?

  10. I watched Matt Vickers interviewed on Sky News just now, and every time I see a Tory front bencher interviewed on the telly they come across exactly like some drunken racist in the pub:

    "Abolish human rights!"
    "Lefty lawyers!"
    "All foreign men are rapists!"

And this guy thinks he's a serious politician?

Wilfrid Frost challenged him a bit, but very gently. More challenge on this appalling racism, please.

The worst thing about it is that by pushing this narrative so strongly, more and more people will believe it, and will end up voting for Reform.

You think things are bad now, you ain't seen nothing yet. Things will be so much worse with the #FrogFacedGrifter as PM.

And I fear that that's exactly where we're headed. I don't understand why #Starmer either doesn't realise that, or doesn't care.

  12. I strongly disapprove of companies who provide some kind of service which I could interact with perfectly well online via a web browser, but they try to push me into using their app.

Sure, there are times when a dedicated app is handy, but there are many more times when everything I need could be done perfectly well through a web browser, no app required.

I just came across a particularly egregious example of this from Trading 212.

  18. What an absolutely terrible comment on how low our society has sunk that anyone actually needs to say that they make no apologies for saving the lives of those in peril at sea.

Why on earth would anyone think for a minute you'd need to apologise for it?

And indeed they have. No longer seems to be possible to search for a list of products, you now have to search for products one at a time.

Just in case you didn't watch the lunchtime news on the BBC today, and were wondering what their take on the doctors' strike is, I can tell you it is that the government are doing their best and being very reasonable but the evil doctors are being horribly irresponsible and putting patients in harm's way.

  26. I am not optimistic that this review of the water industry is going to bring meaningful improvements.

Given that the scope of the review explicitly ruled out nationalisation before the review even started, how can we be sure that keeping the water industry in private hands is the best option?

Especially as experience so far tells us that privatisation has failed miserably.
