  1. I really have the feels for the voice on the #RNLI ad who says “I shouted; I shouted. Nobody heard me”. I well up every time.

  2. On the beach... this afternoon at Roker's Cat & Dogs Steps Beach on Sunderland's seafront in NE England.
Still feeling pleasantly warm, with the emphasis on 'pleasant' rather than last week's temperatures, which were bordering on oppressive.
As can be seen, the local RNLI lifeguards have the beach staked out, but with the school holidays around another three weeks away, it was pretty quiet on the incoming tide.

  3. As people wilt under the heat, this 1920's collection box from the Royal National Lifeboat Institute is a permanent reminder of the need for water safety.

Even inland, the rnli.org safeguard lives across the UK by providing education at local community events. So, if you come across them this Summer, please stop and say hello 🌞

  4. On the train to Waterford this morning with the bike, then cycling out to Tramore in the sunshine to visit EI3CC for their SOS Radio Week activation in aid of the RNLI.

Radio on the prom, a bike gathering, bands, and a very worthy cause. Hard to ask for a better Sunday spin.

Looking forward to meeting the EI3CC crew and supporting the activation.

  5. Arranmore, County #Donegal, hosts the most recently-launched lifeboat in Ireland: 12:28 on Sunday 26 April. Arranmore lifeboat: rnli.org/Arranmore

In 2024, the #RNLI made 9,141 launches, saving 352 lives.

I follow the lifeboat launches at @outonashout

You can also track them at rnli.org/what-we-do/lifeboats-

  6. Out this week, is episode one of the new podcast 'We Are Lifeguards' from The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, or more commonly known as the RNLI.

Since 1824, the RNLI have been saving lives at sea but since 2001, they have operated a special lifeguard service at beaches across the United Kingdom.

  7. We've all heard World War Two stories of the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy but what about the lifesaving efforts of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute?

From Ireland’s neutral stance to the occupation of the Channel Islands, 'RNLI Stories of Courage 1939-45' highlights the different WW2 experiences of RNLI crews.

  8. #RNLI #lifeboats are on call all day, every day. All the crew are volunteers. ❤️

#Kropotkin praised the RNLI as one of the finest examples of his principle of #mutualAid.

In #WestCork, teenage volunteer Muireann O’Donnell and her father Aodh will spend Christmas on call with the inshore lifeboat crew in the village of #UnionHall.

The #IrishExaminer tells their story at irishexaminer.com/news/spotlig

  9. On the night of the 19th December 1981, in horrendous storm conditions, the mini-bulk carrier ‘Union Star’ suffered engine failure east of the Wolf Rock. Refusing tug assistance, the ship found itself being swept towards the coast at Boscawen Point, west of the Tater-du lighthouse. The Penlee lifeboat launched from Mousehole in total darkness, 100 mph winds and waves cresting to 60 feet.

    Listen from 39:30.
The last communications of the lifeboat #SolomonBrowne trying to rescue a ship in 60 foot waves during the #PenleeLifeboatDisaster.
The frantic calls from Falmouth Coastguard trying to contact them.
Don't forget that everyone of these people is a volounteer.
Give the #RNLI your fucking money 🙂

  10. It's the anniversary today of the infamous 1981 Penlee Lifeboat Disaster on 19 December 1981, when all the crew of the Penlee lifeboat 'Solomon Browne', based near Newlyn in Cornwall, were tragically lost attempting to rescue the crew and passengers of the stricken coaster 'Union Star'.
Just a couple of miles down the road from where I live is the coastal town of Seaham in Co Durham and to this day, despite the passage of time, I've never forgotten the night the town made the headlines for another lifeboat disaster somewhat closer to home.
The Seaham Lifeboat Disaster occurred on 17 November 1962, when the local RNLI lifeboat 'George Elmy' capsized near the harbour walls pictured here, killing five volunteer crew members and four fishermen, including a nine-year-old boy, after rescuing them from another fishing boat, 'Economy', under atrocious stormy conditions.

  11. Since Clacton is in the news, here's its (old) lifeboat station. (There's a much more modern RNLI station, a bit along the coast.)

  12. With my feed full of Faragist awfulness I am reminded of this: "But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism." So I'm now going to have a glass of wine and watch 'Saving Lives At Sea', about the #RNLI.

  13. Oooh, new series of Saving Lives At Sea is out: bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0920fvl

Follows RNLI volunteers (yes volunteers) going out in all conditions to save people around to coast of the UK.

  14. @sunflowerinrain

I wish I could afford to help all the important, to me, causes.
Did you know that I went door to door collecting for them in Christchurch one summer?

In the days when people did that ...
