  2. Building a #gentoo qcow2 image for #OracleCloud using qemu-system-aarch64 setup like the A1 instance because I'm a masochist.

Sure, I've got a ton of x86_64 cores I could throw at it, or I could setup distcc, or lots of stuff other things. But nah.

  3. @miekg Oh... I feel you are an expert there :)

My path have started from gentoo with emerge with later various distro hops, like OpenSuse Ubuntu Mint Debian, etc.

But deep dive Gentoo I liked the most, since it had the least issues with packages. The reason I've never came back there, is a compilation time.
I remember how I built KDE for more than 20 hours (Celeron 2.4 in early 2000s).

After many years in MacOS (right now it's also a primary OS, Arch is only on a big PC), it's really confusing that many things are not available without hacks.
In MacOS Homebrew made it so simple, it's hard to accept that Linux may have so many complications with a package distributions.

It looks like snap or flatpack should fix this issue, but they don't. Many things from snap don't work or do not available, flatpack the same.

Installing Homebrew in Linux does not feel right.

  4. @joergi Funny, my first Linux happened to be also a #SuseLinux bought around the same time as a physical copy. I can remember that it came with a printed manual.
Soon after this I went completely nuts with #gentoo

  5. I did see that LTT vid come up some days ago but I didn't watch them. They're probably entertaining for normal people but I don't really care about their vids anymore. For sure that'll bring people who'll stick to Linux permanently and it's good I guess.

I'll just keep on using whatever distro I want. I really wanna get a 5950X so I can do LFS and gentoo lol. Fuck getting new mobo, cpu and ddr5 ram these days

  9. Gentoo Linux on my mini PC: Encrypted root + BTRFS with subvolumes + OpenRC + Limine bootloader. Its a start! ✅

Distro-hopping now on pause. Month of March is all about Gentoo. Plan is to take this base system and build it up to a lightweight desktop with Wayland + TBD window manager.

Next up: Learn more about Portage/emerge.

  10. I was going to swap out OpenRC for SystemD for my Gentoo install, but Alpine introduced me to OpenRC and I think I'm going to run with it a bit.

  11. I've been having so much fun exploring Gentoo Linux these past few days! :gentoo:

I now having a working configuration of Gentoo (in a VM) with a combination of root encryption + BTRFS + OpenRC + Limine bootloader. ✅

Next up is bare metal install.

    Onward!

  12. Gentoo is the latest Linux distribution to ditch GitHub. Let's hope that, first, many follow, and second, Codeberg receives the funding it needs to maintain its service.

  13. Właśnie zaktualizowałem trochę starych paczek #Gentoo do EAPI 8.

    #autotools #C

  14. So I've just bumped a bunch of old #Gentoo packages to EAPI 8. Some of them haven't been updated for 6 years. And do you know what's best? They still worked — their build systems work, they compile and they just work. Unlike most of the stuff developed these days.

  15. #gentoo #xv #webp

I just pushed an experimental new ebuild for media-gfx/xv-4.2.0 to my overlay at
    https://github.com/UnixRonin/gentoo-dev-alaric

This ebuild has no USE flags as yet, but REBASES xv from the mostly-dead, unmaintained xv codebase at cis.upenn.edu to the Fedora codebase at
https://github.com/jasper-software/xv, which is still being actively maintained (and, for example, now includes webp support). The Jasper xv-4.2 codebase also includes many xv patches from OpenBSD and OpenSUSE.

EDIT: Just updated to media-gfx/xv-4.2.0-r1 to fix missing DEPEND declarations for libxcb and libwebp.

  19. Okay in a bit of a midlife crisis mode, and in part to celebrate 20 years of blogging, I ended up buying the domain that hosted my website 20 years ago, and have it redirect to my current site.

Some of you old school #Gentoo users may remember flameeyes.web.ctonet.it/ as it was where I published my additional ebuilds (before we had the concept of overlays) in tarballs (before experimenting with bzr, hg, and git.)

Others might remember the #LIRC patches for Linux 2.6.

  20. Got to love a system that literally lets you spawn child processes until you shoot yourself in the foot.

    #Gentoo #ParallelProcessing

  21. Wow. All the big packages updating on my #Gentoo #Linux box. Been about 20 hours, 165 of 201 completed.

That's what I get for not updating for about 10 days.

Oh, and encfs is depreciated and going bye-bye. Luckily I have next weekend off and will have some time to switch all my local backups to #GoCryptFS.

I need to submit my workbook to the print shop for next #AdultESOL term.

    #CyberSecurity class starts tomorrow.

International dinner at school in two weeks.

    I'll sleep when I'm dead.

  22. Ciekawostka: jeżeli różne programy sypią się z błędami typu:

    (…): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: 20:46:27.286: Settings schema '…' does not contain a key named '…'

    Czyli:

    rm ~/.local/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled

    #Gentoo #GNOME #glib

  23. Fun fact: if random applications are crashing with errors like:

    (…): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: 20:46:27.286: Settings schema '…' does not contain a key named '…'

and you've already verified that you've compiled the schemas, and that the schema contains the listed key, then it may mean that for some reason you have another compiled schema file in your home directory, and it's taking precedence.

    In other words:

    rm ~/.local/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled

    #Gentoo #GNOME #glib

  24. Updating Codeberg repos. and adding things to my latest dwm build on Gentoo. Like yazi! Only one to go (tomorrow): Mango on FreeBSD!

Gentoo 😐

  26. W oczekiwaniu jutrzejszej Wielkiej Zmiany, przebudowuję mój kontener roboczy #Gentoo, wyłączając wsparcie Pythona 3.10 oraz #PyPy 3.10. 1158 paczek do przebudowania — i długa lista konfliktów.

    #Python

  27. In anticipation of tomorrow's Big Switch, I'm rebuilding my #Gentoo dev conainer with #Python 3.10 and #PyPy 3.10 disabled. 1158 rebuilds — and a long list of conflicts, though I'm not sure if these conflicts were "I won't rebuild these packages" or "I have resolved them".
