There's one more thing this article about #NZonAir and public funding of media production doesn't mention (aside from the conflict of interest in writing on this topic being sponsored by a streaming service). Media funded by the public ought to be released under a #CreativeCommons license. If I want to download and watch #TerryTeo while in China, ARR copyright is likely to make that difficult (assuming its even available, it's probably #GeoBlocked). Why should it be?

"Yet now the classic rainy day has arrived, Hipkins and his cabinet have decided to reduce spending on emissions reductions designed to stop future days from being even rainier. In making this choice, he has exposed the real priorities of both National and Labour over the last 20 years of fiscally tight policies. It was not for saving for rainy days."

Yay for #BikeTrain initiatives in Tāmaki-makau-rau!
So inspiring!Let's give kids the fun, freedom, and independence of moving about by bike! 🚲🚴🚴♂️🚴♀️
“You can spend a lot of money trying to change the behaviour of a 40-year-old, but kids already want to be active and outdoors,” Fordham explains, adding that, after all, “these kids are the ones we expect to live a carbon zero lifestyle in 2050.”

"This focus on depressed mothers as mothers and the impact it has on their child is not unusual. Indeed, in my doctoral research, I found this idea prevalent in policy and practitioner accounts in child protection work; a mother’s mental health matters insofar as it affects her child, not apparently because she matters.

The right claim National are better protectors of economic health than Labour. It's never been true, and still isn't;
"No recession is expected. The economy will continue to grow at 2.6%, on average, over the next four years. Inflation will be back under 3% some time next year, and wages will easily outpace it. Unemployment will rise, but only to 5.4%, a below-average amount.
Government debt remains low by global and historical standards..."

@norightturnnz Have you seen the TOP policy on doing a land value tax instead of a CGT, and allowing payments to be deferred until the sale of the house, so it kind of, sort of, doubles as an inheritance tax? Thoughts?
New leader Raf Manji talks about it in the 26 Oct interview with Toby Manhire on the Gone By Lunchtime podcast:

Not a recession as such but an economic shock created by a pandemic, but yes, this person was right on the money.
"With a general economic tightening in the air, there is a renewed sense of urgency from senior media figures, with one media executive suggesting that even a mild recession could wipe out multiple huge media brands in 'months, not years'."

CW: Death, medical
"I am young, curious, pretentious, and I remember the word triskaidekaphobia, and I laugh, because the hospital skips straight from 12 (General Medical) to 14 (Older Adult Health Services), the way a kid skips over cracks in the pavement. I am not a kid; I am 17 and eternal and know big words, and I’m so brave but oh but in my gut I’m scared to see a dead body, I’m too young for this, I should have applied at Maccas"

For anyone needing a post-election laugh;
"The wealth tax has announced that it is ruling out working with Chris Hipkins for the duration of his tenure as Labour leader and prime minister. Speaking in solemn tones to a crowded media conference in Wellington the wealth tax said it was disappointed in recent rhetoric and political posturing from Chris Hipkins, and after careful reflection had resolved to rule out working with him."

Christopher Luxon reminds me of Don Brash running as Nat leader in 2005. Like Brash, Luxon is unable to think on his feet in interviews, so instead of giving spontaneous answers to the questions asked, he falls back on parroting talking points. Anyone who wants ChatGPT for PM, knows who to vote for ; )
Although as #TobyManhire points out, there are some important differences between 2005 and 2023:

Good one Michael 🤣
"What about Act? Who is the Prebble of 2023? There is no listed candidate for the [Wellington Central] electorate, and when the chair of the event, RNZ legend Bryan Crump, looked unsuccessfully around the room for someone from the party, Michael Appleby of the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party piped up. 'They asked me to speak on their behalf', he lied. 'The Association of Cannabis and Toking'."

The polls haven't been good news for Labour *or* National, as standalone parties. As #TobyManhire pointed out last month;
"the average across the latest polls from five companies put the Labour/National aggregate at 66.2%. And it is not just the lowest of the last dozen years. Not since the end of 2002 have the big two polled beneath a combined 70%. That followed a record low 20.9% election result for National, with Labour winning 41.26%."

"Voters in Oregon opted last year to decriminalise the personal use and possession of all drugs – and, in place of criminal prosecution, to fund new drug health services out of the burgeoning revenue from legalised cannabis. The state assembly in Massachusetts has introduced a bill to do the same and you will see other states follow in the months ahead."

On March 22, Billy Te Kahika was a modestly successful blues musician, imploring the NZ government to move to level 4 lockdown to protect our people from COVID-19. Within a couple of months, he had become the founder of the NZ Public Party, a prolific public figure spreading COVID-19-related conspiracy fantasies (5G, Bill Gates etc). How did this happen? Three words; corporate social media:

CW: Sexual assault in the news
"It is less than 40 years since our laws changed to recognise that wives had sexual rights within marriage, and there is clearly still a cultural lag with some men believing they are entitled to women’s bodies. While individual men may be willing to challenge these beliefs, the messaging everywhere from pornography to defence lawyers continues to uphold these ideas."

"In the week following Keen-Minshull’s ignominious flight out of Auckland, the media discussion shifted on a dime and the backlash started. An overwhelming show of support for my community was painted as a riot by people who’d never lost a night’s sleep in their lives. The usual talking heads asked why we wouldn’t debate politely with people who shout for our extermination. Through it all, I did not hear a single trans voice. "

"... after the mosque attacks, one of the authors of this article spoke ... to a senior member of the government who assured him that there would be government support for these communities. But as the budget came and went, there was very little to help sustain these communities other than short-term funding for mental health. Compare that to the opaque $25m spent on stopping asylum seekers arriving by boat and it feels like little has changed.

"My daughter recently asked me whether I would want my grandsons to read my book. I’ve pondered that.
And the answer is a firm no. It sends so many wrong messages.

Men of my vintage find it hard to change ...for reasons we can’t articulate but are somehow entrenched so deeply within us that we can’t move past certain attitudes.That can be attitudes towards women... young people... parenting ... genders. Attitudes towards attitudes."

Content warning: Nazis, colonial racism, other racist incidents
"By number of incidents, ... The highest percentage by city were Christchurch (24%), ....
The higher rate in Christchurch (population 400,000) compared to Auckland (1.4 million) reflects the demographic differential: Christchurch is 87% European and Auckland is 59% European. Similarly, Nelson, with the second highest rate, lies in the 93%-European Tasman region."
