  1. "For gangs, the Misuse of Drugs Act (1975) has been one of the best recruiting tools they’ve ever had. Criminalisation of a raft of illicit drugs not only provides them with a wildly lucrative black market.

    ...

    Once users are prosecuted and get sent to jail, gangs offer not only a vital form of self-preservation on the inside, but are (often) the only willing employer waiting on the outside."

  2. Mike Sabin has come a long way since his MethCon days (and a con it certainly was);

    nzherald.co.nz/nz/experts-warn

    But he's still stuck in a 20th century paradigm where there is a single 'just say no' approach to "drugs", as a general category. One that nobody would accept if it included 3 of the most dangerous recreational drugs; alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical opioids.

  3. "[Harm Reduction Coalition Aotearoa] believes that endless amendments to an unworkable law are not the solution. It is time to replace drug laws with a single, coherent Psychoactive Drug Law—one that regulates all drugs, including currently legal substances, such as alcohol. A modern drug law grounded in science, evidence, and human rights, promoting health education and harm reduction under the administration of the Ministry of Health."

  7. #ChrisFowlie points out that both Kamala Harris, and her newly-announced VP candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, are open advocates of drug law reform, including liberalisation of federal laws around cannabis.

  8. I knew Brian Borland as Dakta Grower when we were travelled together on Maryjane the CannaBus back in 2008. The same year I ran in the Ohariu electorate against Peter Dunne - then a determined prohibitionist - for the Cannabis Party.

    Brian has always been a roaring lion, pleading not guilty whenever he faces court action for cannabis, and he's just been convicted again.

  9. Apparently the Biden administration are in the process of effectively decriminalising cannabis at the US federal level. I wonder if the next Presidency will reverse that, do nothing, or extend it to a regulated commercial supply?

  10. Can we please, please, just decriminalise all personal use of drugs (including home growing/ processing for personal use), and get rid of the racist prohibition system the Misuse of Drugs Act continues to maintain?

    "But while the overall numbers are down, the discrimination has increased. For the first time, Māori now make up more than half of drug prosecutions."

  11. Any kiwi culture jammers out there who are good with graphic design?

    In recognition of National's unfailing support for an unregulated, untaxed black market for supplying cannabis, and the inconsistent crackdowns on black market suppliers that push people towards using P, I present this potential billboard correction:

  13. "The Labour Party do not believe we can solve the issue of drugs through criminal sanction against the user. The issue of decriminalisation of the person should and must be at the forefront of our approach. Addiction needs to be treated as a health issue, not a legal one."

  18. "Voters in Oregon opted last year to decriminalise the personal use and possession of all drugs – and, in place of criminal prosecution, to fund new drug health services out of the burgeoning revenue from legalised cannabis. The state assembly in Massachusetts has introduced a bill to do the same and you will see other states follow in the months ahead."

    "Washington D.C. similarly passed Initiative 81 Tuesday night, which decriminalized the cultivation and possession of 'entheogenic plants and fungi'."
