  1. Is the problem of coercion raised by Birthrights one more aspect of the NHS crisis, with doctors & midwifes lacking the time (or headspace) to discuss options & making decisions for mothers because they don't have the capacity for patients to exercise a personal choice?

Birthright's sample is small (and self-selected?) so its unclear how representative it is, but equally the conclusions are in line with others' criticisms of maternity care.

  6. The Q. raised by the new (and damning) report into English NHS maternity care, is how much does the observed budgetary problem(s) leading to both inadequate staffing & resources contribute to the other issues identified & how much of these other difficulties are about staff (and social) attitudes?

Whatever the answer, its pretty clear that maternity care is at best pretty uneven across England & at worse needs major reform & investment.

  8. The nurses caring for new parents in the Netherlands.

All new mothers in the Netherlands have a legal right to “kraamzorg” – a unique form of maternity care in the days after they give birth.

Here’s how it transforms the “fourth trimester”.

  9. Three months into Baroness Amos' Inquiry into NHS maternity care and already the problems are clear to her... she has found much evidence of a lack of cleanliness & other practical failings, women not being listened to during their care, a range of discriminations & the problem of NHS 'marking their own homework' on failures of care.

None of this may be a surprise, but Amos' interim report indicate the direction her Inquiry will likely take?

  11. Less than half of rural hospitals in the U.S. offer labor and delivery care and hundreds more may end services due to financial challenges, according to a report from the policy firm Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform. 200 have closed labor and delivery centers in the last 10 years.

It all comes down to the US for-profit system. Corporate greed does not belong in healthcare.

  12. Maternity care providers that treat women with dignity and respect and offer support may decrease the risk of maternal and newborn complications, whereas improving communication and autonomy may increase postpartum family planning uptake.

  13. Another train wreck. How many deaths from train wrecks does the maternal healthcare death of April Valentine represent?

Who in hell votes for people of both parties who are corrupt and underfund safety and the common good.

Single payer health care is necessary for human beings, no matter if they are resource poor or make you mad.

    Got that, Centinella Hospital?

  14. @auscandoc I agree this isn’t good but neither is a poorly staffed maternity service without the necessary resources - maternity theatres, scrub staff, obstetricians, Anaesthetists & midwives all of whom are practicing regularly, fully trained and experienced. Not to mention on-site blood bank & all their staff & oh I nearly forgot neonates! What compromises can be made? #MaternityCare #PatientSafety #OckendenReport #RuralMaternityCare #ObstetricMedicine #ObstetricAnaesthesia
