  10. #Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:
#TfL has responded to a Freedom of Information request on comparative #hydrogen and electric bus performance. TfL said it does not hold a Life Cycle Cost Analysis comparing hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric buses for high-frequency routes, as no such study has been completed. However, it provided 2023 data on hydrogen consumption for its double-decker fleet, showing monthly usage ranging from 6.24 to 7.78 kg per 100km. The lowest consumption occurred in February, while the highest was recorded in June. The data indicates higher fuel use during summer months compared with winter. TfL also confirmed that 50% of capital funding for hydrogen infrastructure comes from external grants, with the remainder funded through its core budget.

In July 1907, #London Electrobus Co., Ltd introduced 34-seat, 40 h.p. battery buses. Within nine months they covered 93,482 miles and carried nearly one million passengers.

Supporters such as Mr Paul Taylor hailed the Electrobus as a quiet alternative that might “abolish petroleum from the streets,” noting quicker acceleration than petrol #buses. However, batteries were costly and performance limited to about 12 m.p.h. By 1910, it disappeared petrol buses dominant.

By 1933, A.V.M. noted renewed interest in electric traction. Trolleybuses were successful but restricted by overhead wires and fixed routes. Advances such as the Edison and #Irish Drumm batteries, and cheaper electricity from the National Grid, encouraged revival.

A future “battery bus” was envisaged, combining petrol flexibility with electric silence and cleanliness, making engineers “ten a penny.”
