🚅🏴 #ScotRail recorded 8,423,512 passenger journeys in July, almost 900,000 more than in the same month last year. The rise came during a busy month of major events, including the #Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, TRNSMT and concerts by Take That, Zach Bryan and Luke Combs.
The operator added more services and longer trains during the Games, providing more than 1,400 extra carriages. The final weekend was ScotRail’s busiest Sunday since returning to public ownership in 2022, followed by a record week with more than 2.1 million journeys.
ScotRail said the removal of peak fares and a fares freeze until March 2027, alongside high motoring costs, were encouraging more people to choose rail. The operator said it now wants to retain these new customers by providing safe, reliable and welcoming services.

🏴 #ScotRail’s 70-strong Class 385 fleet has travelled more than 62 million miles since entering passenger service in 2018. The trains had clocked up 62,827,366 miles by the end of July 2026 – the equivalent of more than 130 return journeys to the Moon.
The electric fleet has carried an estimated 25.5 million passengers on routes connecting #Edinburgh, #Glasgow, North Berwick and communities across central Scotland. It largely replaced diesel Class 170 trains and has delivered an estimated 82% reduction in carbon emissions.
Built by Hitachi Rail and maintained at Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh, the Class 385s have earned two Golden Spanner awards in the past three years for reliability and performance. ScotRail says the milestone reflects the work of its engineering teams and its partnership with Hitachi Rail.

A ScotRail Class 158 heads for Edinburgh across the Forth Bridge.
This viewpoint handily arranges the three bridges in order of construction date, from top to bottom: Forth Bridge; Forth Road Bridge; and the Queensferry Crossing.
I still think the rail bridge is the most impressive.

Hmm. Scotrail want to know how their complaint process was for me?
Edit: Ahah! They have updated the app this morning. It now has a pop-up saying that the browser is unsupported. Chrome, Firefox or Samsung only.
Edit2: Ahah-ahah! It said Firefox still wasn't installed - so I had to restart the phone. Also the new app disappeared, even though I could open it 🥸 They slyly renamed it as NEW Scotrail...
Firefox does work. I am in.
Will it now collapse if I delete Firefox 🤔
Edit3: I am invited to add my railcard. It asks the number. The number includes letters. The keyboard is numeric only. Pasting is possible ✅ Pasting letters is not possible ❌

🏴 #ScotRail will add extra late-night #trains and thousands of additional seats from Friday, 7 August, to support travel during Edinburgh’s summer festivals.
The enhanced timetable, running until Sunday, 30 August, includes additional services between #Edinburgh Waverley and #Glasgow Queen Street, Tweedbank, Dundee and Leven, as well as longer trains on key routes across #Scotland.
Passengers attending evening events are advised to check their journey, buy tickets before boarding where possible, and allow extra time as stations are expected to be busier. Queuing systems may be introduced at Edinburgh Waverley and other locations.
Due to the ongoing closure of part of Princes Street following a fire, some travellers may find Haymarket station more convenient. ScotRail has published full timetable details online and through its app.

The new Scotrail app has been updated today. Still crashes without Chrome.

When visiting family in Scotland in March, we spotted this sign on a 'No Entry' door on the Aberdeen to Inverness train: "Stay Out: On-Board Whisky Distillery". It gave us a laugh. We were definitely in the heart of distillery country.
Apparently there are other variants on doors across the ScotRail network, but this is the only one I've seen. It's a small detail, but it brought a smile to my face.
#ScotRail thanks for the unexpected entertainment!

Crikey! The ratings and reviews of the new Android #Scotrail app has now dropped to 1.1 stars. That the lowest review you are allowed to give is 1 star means that almost everyone absolutely detests the new app. The new app is the front end to a new booking system & I can't see the problems being fixed quickly. Just for extra chaos the old app has been disabled.
Is this an existential problem for Scotrail? Will travelers migrate to apps operated by other operators? #publictransport #trains

🏴📈🚉 #ScotRail has recorded its busiest week since returning to public ownership, with more than 2.1 million passenger journeys made between 26 July and 1 August.
The rise reflects growing demand for rail travel to events, as well as business, shopping and leisure trips. The record week follows June figures showing more than seven million journeys, up six per cent on the same month in 2025.
Additional services have supported major events including the #Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026, TRNSMT, concerts at Hampden and Murrayfield, and Glasgow’s Summer Sessions. Extra trains are also planned for the #Edinburgh Festivals.
ScotRail said the figures showed the efforts of its teams and would support its aim of delivering a reliable, safe and greener #railway for #Scotland.

@FaithfullJohn Possibly. #Scotrail have changed the whole booking engine & it seems a bit random. For example, bike spaces don't seem to show.

After all the fanfare from #ScotRail heralding the need for downloading their new phone app as the old one would stop working on the 30th July, the replacement is totally flaky. It won't let you login unless you use a #Chrome browser (I don't) & reports of other issues are rife. It has a 1.3 star rating on Google Play which I think generous.
I need another (privacy respecting) #Android #train booking app. Any suggestions?

New #Scotrail app is... not good.
Why would I *want* to activate a return ticket, after all?
Reverting fo paper tomorrow, I think.
-
Well done Scotrail, you win the award for the worst app update of the decade. Your new Scotrail Trains app is absolute pants. *must create new password - verification email doesn't arrive. *enter railcard ID - doesn't allow text characters.

FFS #Scotrail. Just all the WTAFs!
New app search DOESN'T recognise Station Code for my local station! (the old app still DOES!)
What an absolute train wreck! (pun intended) -
As predicted ScotRail tickets booking is really quite broken now. Login on the website is totally non functional and app backend seems overloaded as it keeps saying I am offline when I am not... #ScotRail

ScotRail today demonstrated to the nation the importance of having a good release process. They pushed out a change to an app, not in a phased update, but a full new app. They immediately deprecated the old one. When I tried it this morning so many things were broken, from login attempts crashing the app to adding basic ticketing options like discount cards being broken. Not to mention most the of the tech support and updates is still coming from their X account.
I really hope they eventually publish a post-mortem for this because I would love to see how they got this so wrong. -

For the small Venn diagram intersection of #Scotrail and #GrapheneOS users... the new Scotrail app requires Chrome as account login browser 🙄
Does it tell you this or do you need to dig into the logs and debug it. Well, this is Scotrail after all, what do you think?
-
Great. New #Scotrail app plus #grapheneos = crashy crashy
-
The much heralded new #Scotrail app has just landed. "Scotrail keeps stopping". Indeed.
Anyone else?

🏴🚉 #ScotRail recorded 201,463 passenger journeys on Sunday, 26 July, its busiest Sunday since returning to public ownership in April 2022. The total was boosted by people travelling to #Commonwealth Games events across #Glasgow, including bowls, swimming, boxing, basketball and gymnastics. ScotRail has been running extra services to key venues, including Dalmarnock, Exhibition Centre and Scotstounhill, along with additional evening trains. The record follows more than seven million passenger journeys in June and reflects a busy summer of concerts, festivals and sporting events, including TRNSMT, Take That, Zach Bryan, Luke Combs and the Summer Sessions at Bellahouston. More services are planned for the #Edinburgh Festivals, with extra staff across the network to help passengers.
