Only just getting into new album releases on this #NewMusicFriday but super excited to have a new lp from #MadisonMcFerrin to dig into!
Album is called Scorpio. Already clear #StevieWonder vibes on "Ain't It Nice"!

Waiting for some news from the vet on our cat's status.
So I'm listening to Madison McFerrin's Tiny Desk Concert from a few weeks ago. Great set!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtXMRhAwWVQ
Her 2023 album "I Hope You Can Forgive Me" is immaculate. My favorite cut is probably "Utah":

Good day for lovers of #Improvisational / #Jazz / adjacent music... on my radar:
New trio record from Ambrose Akinmusire with Bill Frisell and Herlin Riley - "Owl Song"
New very short but very welcome *solo* set from drummer Nate Smith, "Pocket Change 2"
The last month of the year is never great for new releases but this December has had a few gems so far!

At a teaching and learning conference and using a chatbot as an interactive partner for students in assignments seems to be the trend of the day.
In some cases, it makes sense. But in a lot of the examples, I want to say: or, have ANOTHER STUDENT be the interactive partner?

Looking forward to the new #Sufjan, sure, but #DanielVillareal has a new album out w/ #JeffParker and #AnnaButterss --- that's the real weekend soundtrack for me.

"If everyone who streamed All Hell on Spotify had done so using Tidal instead, we would have received an extra £31,847.38, which would double the amount we made from streaming of the album in this time period. Or if everyone used Apple Music it would have been £12,331 more."
Really liked this very honest overview of streaming income from Los Campesinos.
(fwiw, have been using Tidal for a year now I think, and really no regrets.)

At first glance, some of today's album releases I'll be checking out today/this weekend include...
#PomPoko - Champion (art rock-ish, a bit proggy)
#RosieLowe - Lover, Other (alt r&b?)
#BenSollee - Long Haul (folk-ish? though I haven't checked him in a minute)
and eventually probably that #Tinashe album...
No full-length hip hop of interest to me this week?!?! Still working through the lists, so maybe one will jump out later. I'll put that new 38 Spesh on the backburner for when I'm in the right mood.
A quieter release day but these will keep me busy as I finish syllabus and resource prep to start classes next week.
Oh, and first faculty meeting of the semester today.

Easily overlooked among end-of-year album releases is this new live record from The Roots, doing the bulk of their DYWM album (as part of its anniversary).
Super solid. It was recorded live shortly after Roy Ayers passing and they include an instrumental tribute + a live version of Proceed 2, which Ayers guested on (and which I've never heard a live version of, I don't think)
The real white whale here is a live Distortion to Static!!! And it's excellent, along with a Rahzel-supported, Dice-featuring "The Lesson" that is slamming.
But we also get live versions of a good number of tunes from Illadelph Half life, including Section and Respond/React.
Great release all around. Not a lot of contenders for "best live hip hop album ever" but this is a strong contender.

I found the `zeallot` package for destructuring/unpacking assignments in #Rstats. I'm familiar w/ #destructuring in JS and Python, had not really wondered about it in R until recently... how did I not know this existed?
https://github.com/r-lib/zeallot
Is this package the only implementation of destructuring in R? Is there an obvious implementation I just don't know about --- maybe something hiding in the #tidyverse?

Looks like #Pikapods has a new #Todoist alternative, #Vikunja. Have been wanting a self-hosted task manager for ages, might check it out.
Although I have moved a lot of my stuff off of Pikapods to my own VPS or home server, I still like being able to try things easily via Pikapods without the struggle of initial setup.

From the January 26 New Yorker:
"Small-Talk Road Map" by Liana Finck
(I felt a lot of this)

Wait -- do you now have to be signed into #Worldcat to see other editions/formats of a title?
I remember someone posting some crummy changes to Worldcat recently. Is this one of them?
When I click "View all formats and editions" I get a sign-in prompt that asks:
"Are you ready to unleash a world of knowledge and discovery?"
No, gross, I'm just ready to find the right edition of this book to add to my #Zotero.

Some final fall harvest: #Daikon, a few small carrots and eggplants, and a watermelon of dubious quality.

Pleased to learn Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk has an Urban Dictionary entry. Critical, necessary knowledge.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Sir%20Nose%20D%27VoidofFunk
Often reach for certain music to brace myself for days that I know will have unpleasant elements to them -- try to find my inner cool, preemptively. This morning it's #Chaka (Body Heat!) with a bit of #PFunk for good measure.

From *The Supreme Court and the Philosopher: How John Stuart Mill Shaped U.S. Free Speech Protections* by Eric Kasper and Troy Kozma:
"US constitutional jurisprudence today has remarkably strong free speech protections when compared to other developed democracies." (10)
This book just came out in 2024. I don't think they could have gotten away with that line if their book was published just a few months later... 😩
(Also, will use this thread for #ReadingNotes of this book, which I grabbed on a whim and should be a really interesting read, especially right now.)

"A sparse snow was falling."
#FirstSentence of Han Kang, *We Do Not Part*
(Starting running thread for any notes here)

Made Claire Saffitz's Kabocha Turmeric Tea Cake from *Dessert Person*.
There are these really tasty cumin cookies that you can get at Indian markets in the US and, occasionally, a Sikh-owned truck stop with a small Indian foods section. (Speaking from experience!)
The flavor of this bread reminds me of those cookies! Turmeric, garam masala, kabocha, and sugar, dotted with pumpkin seeds. Sort of perfect, really.
Great flavor, maybe ate a little dry. I thought about adding a bit of moisture to the squash mash next time, since the only real moisture in the bread was 2 eggs, some maple syrup, and some vanilla extract.
