Lots of interesting stuff out for #NewMusicFriday -- I'm looking at you, new #Darkside album -- but tbh, I've just been listening to #Raveena all morning, lol.

Her album from last year, "Where Butterflies Go in the Rain," took her already interesting pop perspective into a space between 70s AM radio and 90s r&b.

It's sexy and light and flirty in a way that reminds me of what flirtation and young love was like as a teenager.

She's also kind of a weirdo in the best way, as this video for "Lucky" suggests, lol:

Have been thinking a lot about Lupe Fiasco's "CHANNEL NO 3" today... in it, Lupe recasts common video game tropes and structures as part of mastering the game of life.

It doesn't sound all that clever but the overall effect is really smooth, with bars like:

But the good thing about #RabbitHoles are they lead you to new places. I started listening to #LuzmilaCarpio as I reviewed her discography, and I kept listening even after I thought it might be a dead end.

Her recordings are often very simple, with just an acoustic guitar, some percussion, and some other harp/stringed instrument. She sings with a very distinctive voice and is often accompanied by several other singers.

It was while listening to a self-titled release this morning that the tune of "Mariposita" floated up to my ears --- is this it, I thought?

I listened closer --- yes! The tune is from Carpio, indeed, but under a different name, "Pilpintu," which you can hear here:

I poked around a few other search results for "Mariposita" on different platforms but had no luck.

So I went back to the credits to the Elhajli album on Bandcamp --- which are not present on the front page of the album, but songwriting credits are given on individual tracks.

That's when I noticed a name, #LuzmilaCarpio. Carpio is an artist whose work also catalogs and represents Quechuan traditions and language -- cool, so I'll look her up.

But as I looked through the tracklists for different albums I could find from Carpio, I didn't see the name "Mariposita" anywhere --- bummer, especially considering she's released a lot of albums.

So the search was still on...

Have been transfixed for the last week by a song played by Miriam Elhajli on her album *Brand New Mexican* -- the song is called "Mariposita." It is based around a very simple refrain, sung here with two vocal lines and two guitars.

From the Busoni/Brahms on to the recent album from #TakacsQuartet, "Takacs Assad Labro," just released in March 2024.

All contemporary works, several of which were written for this recording/setting, from #ClariceAssad, #BryceDessner, and the #Bandoneon performer #JulienLabro. Labro performs on several of the pieces as well (yes, that's a string quartet and the bandoneon --- which works quite nicely!).

There is also an arrangement of a #MiltonNascimento song and a performance of #KaijaSaariaho's "Nocturne."

Honestly, this album was a delight to listen through. There is a real diversity of style and sound here, and all of it packs a real punch. But on first listen, I think it's the closing "Clash" by Assad that feels like the most mandatory listening.

The whole thing lasted just a few days, but out of this small question - "Is this an original tune?" - I not only found the original, but also got a small entry into Bolivian and Quechuan music and cultures that I didn't have previously. I learned of Carpio, a new name to me, who I feel like I should have heard of earlier... she seems super rad. I'll be working through her catalog and work for sure.

*And* I learned the "Andean Music" is a style tag on Discogs, which means I can keep dipping my toes in this pool for as long as I want.

Broken Dream

New music today! I wrote this originally when I was at a pretty low point and wasn't sure I wanted to share it afterwards because of what it represented for me at that moment.

I felt like I had no motivation or drive to write at the time, and that I was out of all/any ideas and had no creativity left. I was burned out and felt like I was going nowhere.

Somehow this piece managed to come out of those feelings. I decided to revisit it, finish it, and share it, because even the bad days are still part of the journey.

Winding down from a busy weekend of yard and house work as we continue to settle in at our new place, so good time to put on some tunes.

First up, Friday's new release from Brazilian artists #Jadsa and #JoãoMiletMeirelles under the name #TAXIDERMIA: "Vera Cruz Island"

These two work together often, with the latter handling production duties on Jadsa's excellent #OlhoDeVidro.

So far this short release is a typically eclectic outing that's difficult to describe. The lead single, "Clarão Azul" is a nice intro but maybe a bit misleading --- there's some noise and avant twists and turns here, too.
