Wanted to switch task management app. #TickTick exports to CSV which #Vikunja claims to be able to read, but fails (502). #Everdo wants JSON. AI writes a Python script for Everdo-specific CSV→JSON conversion. Importing fails.

#Vikunja wants you to put every task into a project. Labeling tasks involves individual clicks, typing and is tedious. There's only one set of labels you can view your Kanban board as (EDIT: okay, you can make separate Views). You can filter the todo list in a project, but *not* the Gantt chart (EDIT: Okay not interactively, but via editing the View settings). You also can't make an overall Gantt chart to see which tasks across any project are due when. 🫤

Trying out #Vikunja as a todo / project manager. It's super easy for #selfhosting with #nixos, and just has some media files and an sqlite database to store and backup.

It provides some nice visualisations, I especially like the Gantt-style overview of the tasks.

However the webinterface often requires many clicks for basic things. Typical keyboard shortcuts (ESC to close, CTRL+ENTER to save, ...) don't work everywhere. Also Drag'n'dropping tasks weirdly doesn't work everywhere. 🫤

Die Aufgabenverwaltung #Vikunja habe ich schon ewig am Start - bisher aber nur für #Kanban.

Einfache Todo-Listen lagen aus Gründen immer noch in Todoist. Heute habe ich sie dank der Importfunktion nach Vikunja migriert und das Todoist-Konto endgültig gelöscht.

Fühlt sich gut an und weil alles so rund läuft, fließen ab jetzt auch ein paar Taler ans Projekt 💸

After procrastinating a decision about which Kanban tool to use, I finally weighed all the available choices and landed on @vikunja

I think this was the first time that a software having their presence on Mastodon made part of my reasons to choose something. Another one is the integration with Home Assistant.

So far, so good. Haven't used it for more than a few minutes to create some fake tasks, but it's been nice. Now I need to figure out how to migrate from my old Kanboard.

Looks like #Pikapods has a new #Todoist alternative, #Vikunja. Have been wanting a self-hosted task manager for ages, might check it out.

Although I have moved a lot of my stuff off of Pikapods to my own VPS or home server, I still like being able to try things easily via Pikapods without the struggle of initial setup.

I ended up getting Vikunja installed locally and it will probably take the place of Planka, which has some weird proxy issue I can’t easily work around. Vikunja also has more features, some of which Planka was specifically lacking.

@dde Ich versuche auch von #todoist loszukommen und habe einen Blick auf #vikunja geworfen. Leider hat der iOS-Client keine offline-Fähigkeit und lädt bei jedem Aufruf aus dem Netz. Ist das unter Android besser?

I'm just wondering how you keep your containers up to date in an easy manner? You'd have to provide the container ID etc. everytime, which is super cumbersome with your approach.

Maybe this will motivate you a bit to split everything up, this is my workflow:

1. cd service-xyz e.g. #vikunja
2. edit version or if latest tag is used, skip
3. docker compose pull
4. docker compose up -d
5. Enjoy :)

Finally performed the update to #Vikunja 1.0.0-rc3, from 0.24.6.
Also enabled #Podman auto updates in the Quadlet. What could possibly go wrong.

@viharm Thanks, that's nice information. Same use case here. Need apps for linux, macOS, iOS, android (that is, /e/OS). Needs to be easy enough to use that the family actually bothers to use it for groceries and such. Preferably open source and self-host on the synology, but that's more of a bonus. First priority is that it just works right now. #Vikunja looks promising and I'll definitely look into hosting it myself. Did you try to host Vikunja? But #todoist appears to be the obvious out-of-the-box solution.

Coming back to an earlier toot about the best FOSS tool for a to-do list... I discovered #Vikunja and so far it is ticking all the boxes (pun intended).

Experimenting with #vikunja I have a hard time stomaching that projects in the sidebar are subtly indented when they have a chevron in front of them; looks like they're themselves nested
