  3. On Twitter, I used to get tweets in my feed which were obvious bullshit.
Using YouTube, I used to get "for you" recommendations which were obvious right-wing racist bullshit.
On Fediverse, I very rarely get toots in my feed which are very obvious bullshit.

If the benevolent Beloved Environmental Leader is using social media backed by Nazi loving shithead Elon Musk or venture capital genocide supporters in an Ciel-Azul theme, then the BEL should already be aware that that was a traditional source of unreliableness (if it was/is) as should be those criticizing Beloved Environmental Leader.

I am, of course, totally uninvolved and unbiased in internet incidents involving the Beloved Environmental Leader, bless him. 🙏🏾

  8. For long stretches of the book, a main theme seems to be decay, degradation, and loss of function. Of the city, which loses nodes and contact with other cities; of protagonist Enita, who, as a "Saint", has inherited so much credit she can live a leisurely life, has chosen to work with bionic prosthetics instead, and feels the burdens of old age; of her house AI, Nix, who gains a body but slowly looses their distributed consciousness; -

  9. So, Erika Swyler's "We Lived On the Horizon", set in a walled city located in a probably toxic wasteland after som- e general collapse. The city, which is not coincidentally called "Bulwark", is controlled by an AI, "Parallax", which controls resources allocation partly through a system of social debt and everyone piles up during their lifetimes, through work done and care received, as well as through inheritance.

  10. - of "Body Martyr" Neren, who's donated organs to Saints but can't do that anymore; of society itself, who starts to rebel against the debt system.

We get to feel this theme in all the little details: Enita's pains and aches, Nix talking to the city library in languages ever more depreciated, Enita's inability to get tea. I liked these touches, like Nix talking about colors in hexadecimal RGB codes first and then gradually adding verbal descriptions.

  11. And I liked the plausibility of this society, trying to survive in harsh circumstances and finding solutions not unlike the ones in Ian McDonald's "Luna". Enita's repetitive relationship issues, on the other hand, I could've done without.

But actually, decay and degradation aren't the whole story, as it turns out. They're also a chance to build something better, to do away with debts, inherited credit and martyrdom, to grow and change.

  12. Nix does it, the city does it, the society does it, and the ending is rather hopeful. Apparently, Swyler's (and Parallaxes) answer to Ada Palmer's Utopians' question, "would you destroy a world to build a better one?", is a resounding "yes" in this one.

So: some lengths and uneven pacing, lots of talking and relationship stuff, but food for thought and a great AI character not unlike Breq from the "Imperial Radch" series.

  13. And now: researching justification (in the Christian theological sense) in order to figure out if it somehow maps the concept of a "Saint" in this one.

Maybe I'll finally manage to get the denominational differences in my head, it's a slippery concept I can't seem to easily hold on to.

  15. “Body Martyrs aren’t only for Sainted.” Enita knew that for a lie. Across years of practice, not a single client had ever mentioned anyone they knew receiving donations from a Body Martyr, had never even asked if it would have been better for them. It wasn’t a possibility."

And there it is: evidence that this system, if it ever was good or necessary, has become something evil and can't go on like this.

  16. "It’s significant that a being was made with the specific purpose of helping another, was made by a Sainted, and exists without life debt. It is significant that this has occurred at a time of uprising."

  17. "The people you operate on—they’re meant to accrue debt, they’re meant to keep working so the city functions. Parallax is supposed to see that no one suffers, but the system itself, the valuation of work and life hours, it’s breaking people"

  19. And here's a Body Martyr: "As an infant she rarely cried, sensing her mother’s need for a silent and agreeable daughter after the deafening noise of the textile mills."

That's not altruism, that's *trauma*, don't fall for the propaganda.

  20. "Body Martyrs are born with a sense that their lives are meant for the bettering of others, for easing suffering."

Body Martyrs donate organs and body parts to sick and injured people. And whoa, red flag here - "they WANT to sacrifice themselves" is always one if there's a reward and/or pressure involved.

And multiple holds on two different library cards, and subscriptions that bring in another 24 books a year, and a long TBR list of even more on Storygraph. My #TBR is quantifiably nuts. Now, it's back to #TheBlindAssassin, #Mythos, #WarAndPeace, #WolfHall, #OnyxStorm, and #WeLivedOnTheHorizon because I also read multiple books concurrently. And this is how I survive the apocalypse. #Bookstodon
