Young adults are more likely to share their parents’ religious habits when they view their upbringing as warm but structured. A recent study reveals that regional geographic culture alters how different parenting strategies shape this intergenerational transmission of faith. The research was published in the Journal of Religion and Health.
Social scientists use the term emerging adulthood to describe the developmental period between ages 18 and 25. During this window, individuals typically leave their childhood homes and begin making independent decisions about their personal values and religious practices. Past research shows a reliable association between the religious habits of parents and those of their adult children.
Researchers look at three primary parenting styles to understand family dynamics. Authoritative parents balance warmth with consistent boundaries and open communication. Authoritarian parents demand strict obedience and often rely on harsh punishment. Permissive parents offer plenty of warmth but enforce very few rules or expectations.
Melanie A. Stearns, a researcher at the University of South Florida, led a team to investigate how these distinct parenting styles interact with geographic region and parental political conservatism. The team wanted to know if a strict authoritarian style might be highly effective at passing down religion in more conservative areas, such as the American South. They also sought to include data on both mothers and fathers, as previous studies have often focused solely on maternal influence.
The researchers recruited 1,080 emerging adults through an online survey platform. The participants were evenly distributed across four major regions of the United States. These regions included the Northeast, Midwest, South, and West.
The survey asked participants to report on their current religious beliefs. This included their private practices, the social support they receive from a religious community, and their overall spiritual conviction. The participants answered 25 questions, rating statements like “I try to live my life according to my religious beliefs.”
The participants also answered questions about the environment in which they grew up. They rated the religious habits, political conservatism, and parenting styles of their mothers and fathers. The researchers then used structural equation modeling to analyze the data. This statistical technique tests relationships among multiple variables simultaneously.
The results confirmed that perceived parent religiosity reliably predicted the religious habits of the young adults. Authoritative parenting acted as a general amplifier for this connection across the entire sample. When parents were highly religious, an authoritative style was associated with greater religious involvement in their children. When parents were not very religious, an authoritative approach was linked to even lower religious involvement in their children.
Authoritarian and permissive parenting did not universally change the transmission of religion across the whole sample. Instead, the effects of these two styles depended heavily on geographic region. This regional variation confirmed the researchers’ suspicions that local culture changes how children interpret and respond to their parents’ behavior.
In the Northeast and West, high levels of permissive parenting were linked to stronger connections between a mother’s faith and her child’s faith. In the South, a completely different pattern emerged. Southern mothers who were highly religious but also highly permissive tended to have children with lower religious involvement. The researchers suggest that permissive parenting in the South might fail to provide the structure required to involve children in family religious activities.
Fathers showed a distinct regional pattern as well. In the Midwest, fathers who were highly religious and exhibited low levels of permissive parenting were highly effective at passing on their faith. This outcome might reflect cultural norms in the Midwest, where structured, authoritative father figures are a common family expectation. When parents behave in ways that align with local cultural expectations, children may view their authority more favorably and internalize their values.
The researchers also looked at population density, categorizing participants’ childhood zip codes into urban, large rural, and small rural areas. In urban areas, authoritative parenting from both mothers and fathers amplified the transmission of religion. In small rural areas, this amplification effect was only present for fathers.
The researchers initially hypothesized that parental conservatism would also change the effectiveness of these parenting styles. They suspected that authoritarian parenting might yield positive religious outcomes in highly conservative families. The data did not support this idea, and the models did not yield statistically significant results for conservatism as a moderating factor.
The study relies on cross-sectional data, meaning all information was collected at a single point in time. This design prevents researchers from determining strict cause-and-effect relationships. The results only show associations between childhood environments and adult outcomes.
The research also relied entirely on the young adults’ memories and perceptions of their parents. These subjective memories might not perfectly reflect the parents’ actual beliefs or behaviors. Still, developmental psychologists often note that a child’s perception of their environment is the most important factor in shaping their future decisions.
Understanding these family dynamics offers practical insights for public health and clinical psychology. Religious involvement during emerging adulthood is associated with lower rates of substance abuse and better psychological resilience. By identifying how regional culture and parenting interact, mental health professionals can better understand the diverse ways young adults develop protective coping mechanisms.
