  2. @spenbroc @pawsforthought you are quite welcome, on this profile I talk about how to make #CompostAthome because it is something everyone can do especially if they are concerned for the #climate.

  3. Ted: What are you doing Scampi?😸
    Scampi: I’m counting my paws, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 😺
Ted: I think you counted that one twice? 😸
Scampi: Oops, silly me, just the five then 😺🐾

  5. @Hesperalis Oh, that Sylva Grow is expensive but peat compost shouldn’t be sold at all. It certainly shouldn’t be sold cheaper than the peat free alternatives. #Allotment #PeatFree #Compost #GrowYourOwn

  6. @violetmadder My go to’s are Nutrition Farming podcast with Graeme Sait and Regenerative Agriculture podcast by John Kempf and the No Till Market Garden podcast.

  7. @Hesperalis That schedule makes sense.

Useful information I gleaned from John Kempf’s brilliant Regenerative Agriculture podcast with Harriet Mella regenerativeagriculturepodcast was the best uptake for foliar feed (from sap analysis) is the week before the full moon. The least advantageous time is the week of the new moon.

    I dabble in a bit of #RegenAg #KNF, #permaculture, #biodynamics.

When Spring arrives I’ll be making some IMO2 in the fridge into IMO3 with bran & then IMO4 with soil.

  8. January & February are going to drag.

My green manures have mostly been frost killed so I’ve marked out the beds for 2023 (75 cm wide with a 25 cm path in between). Bed lengths will vary on the plot between 5 & 8m.

Three beds are set aside for growing Yacon as a replant perennial. I’ll have another 15 beds to play around with.

  12. @DenHal I loved this series. Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger have a superb on screen rapport.

One of my quirks is I prefer to watch the tv adaption first before reading the novel as it normally means I get more enjoyment out of both. I have had to wait a while but the novel is now on my ever growing to read list.

  13. Green manures were growing well into the first week of December. 10 nights of freezing temperatures (-4°C to -9°C) have knocked them back. Photographed after today’s thaw.

  17. @spenbroc No till growers has a good explainer of the different types of compost youtube.com/watch?v=OpZChqz9ii They have a lot of good information.

How to make it does depend what you want your compost to do and what you’re able to do within your own set up. We all have different constraints but there’s a method to fit anyone.

#JohnsonSu bioreactors youtube.com/watch?v=DxUGk161Ly My bioreactors are a mini version to this.

  18. I harvested half of my Yacon plants before the worst of the hard frosts hit this week. I split a couple of plants and replanted and mulched them with wood chip. I hope they survive. I’ve also stored a dozen growing tips for potting on in spring. Guessing I have about 25 kg of tubers. #Allotment #Gardening #Yacon

  19. CW: UK NURSES STRIKE

@nhsactivistrn I support you 100% Siobhan. “We care for the nation but who cares for the carers? “ Who indeed?

I’ve donated so one striking nurse can be reimbursed £50 through the RCN Strike Benefit for the industrial action taking place on 15th December. If we want to keep the NHS going we have to help you fight for it. Thank you and your colleagues for all you do.

  20. @harshad That is so right. We owe everything we have to the life in our soils that sustains us.

Even though I know my soil is alive with worms there’s always a bit of relief to see them whenever I uncover any soil. They are a joy. #SoilHealth #Soil #Vermicast #Vermiculture

  21. CW: Feeding the worms

@suevb @nicole2g Mine are in the shed too with a little extra cardboard wrapped around the outside of their bin to keep them a bit warmer while still well ventilated. -4°C last night. I can’t check them until tomorrow. 🪱 #worms #vermiculture #vermicast #vermicompost

  22. I love making compost on my allotment. This will be good to go next year. I’ll keep filling the leaf bin for leaf mould for the year after. I’ve also got a pile of steadily increasing bokashi compost and a worm bin in the shed producing vermicast.

  23. @nicole2g @compost My two mini #JohnsonSu #Bioreactors of #Compost built and filled in August. The downpipes (removed after 24 hrs) create ventilating air holes in the compost pile.

After initially heating up between 55-65°C for several days, to kill weed seeds and pathogens, worms were added in September as soon as the pile temperature fell below 25°C.

They are regularly watered to maintain the moisture level. They will take 12 months to produce a fungal, biologically rich compost. 🤞
