Doing a bit of research on the train and a pack of Ailsa Craig onion seeds from Dobies was 65p in 1994. Today the same pack from Dobies is £2.99. That’s a massive 76% more than inflation would suggest. At Kings seeds they are £1.99 for nearly twice as many seeds. That’s why I choose Kings seeds for most of my orders. #enshittification is everywhere.

As the nights draw in, October is a great time to reflect on this year's harvest and plan the next. Grab a cuppa and start designing your 2026 layout on VegPlotter. A good plan now means a great harvest later!

Interestingly I never had any problem with getting parsnip seeds to germinate when sown directly in the selected outdoor growing plot.

I'm looking for some advice on cleaning/remediating a small patch of ground that was a long term domestic waste dump - mostly by incineration (open bonfires). That operation ceased more than 20 years ago.
Currently just digging out the bramble roots and exposing the contaminated ground.
Is there a plant that could be sown here and that might germinate and survive - perhaps a 'green manure'? Definitely not planning to grow veg in this section of this plot! -

Wikipedia offers a very good description of the ancient burgage system of land management.
Here is a link to Pembroke town history - chosen not as it's the best but because it has accessible maps.
https://medievalheritage.eu/en/main-page/heritage/wales/pembroke-city-defensive-walls/#
Attached below is one of those maps showing the burgage plots where I can identify the plot I currently use as a #VegPlot.

I dig or mostly fork that plot. For 'no dig' I think you really need small raised beds to avoid walking on and compacting the soil. I top mulch and sow 'green manure' at the appropriate times - getting good yields but then its been a domestic plot for centuries (old burgage plot).

@annaintheuk
Luckily only a light frost here leaving just a thin 'crust' of frozen soil to break through with the fork 😊 -

Just dug and cleaned out an extension to an existing veg plot. Hoping it'll be productive this season 🌾🌱

When digging my veg plot which is an ancient 'burgage plot', I collect all the broken parts of clay pipes. So far only found one bowl but many inches of pipe stem!

Trying to be self-sufficient with just a few types of vegetables on my tiny veg plot. Still keep referring this old 'Dig for Victory Leaflet No 1' to see how much more I could achieve.
#ambitionEdit: Thanks to all of you who have Favourited or Boosted this post 😊

@spenbroc I was surprised to see kale on there. It’s one of my winter staples and favourite veg but I didn’t have it down as a Dig for Victory veg. I thought it was a relatively recent introduction to our UK diets.
Thank you, that’s one of my misconceptions put right. Always a good thing.
