Went to Flowers: Flora in Contemporary Art & Culture at the Saatchi Gallery.

There’s a lot of interesting things that can be said flowers, what with all the current interest in the human’s entangled relation to the nonhuman, the Planthropocene, the environmental humanities, including elsewhere in the Saatchi gallery:

But the curators here? They draw on very little of it. The concept behind the exhibition is basically: ‘Here’s some works of art that depict flowers.’

That said, some standout pieces make it worth the visit, especially La Fleur Morte by Rebecca Louise Law and The Machinery of Enchantment by William Darrell.

Also: dedicating the final room to emerging artists is a great curatorial move. More shows should copy that.

For a Westerner it seems a contradiction that at the same time these peoples attribute self-awareness, intelligence, intentionality, table manners, compassion, spoken language and technology to #nonhuman animals, atmospheric phenomena and other beings. What the moderns consider exceptionally human, for indigenous peoples is a shared condition of many beings [potentially, all of them].

This has led to much confusion regarding the native cosmologies and anthropologies.

I would like to find some other way of referring to them besides "non-human" animals... humans are animals, too, so it's logical. But if we've seen other ideas, please let me know. I want to decentralize the human and not collectivize everyone else.

It's less about "veganism" and who is "vegan" and more about... are we recognizing animals' intrinsic dignity and will to live, and are we willing to take steps to put that into action.

Centering their lives, not our own comforts and desires. Because we're capable of the added reflection, we have this moral duty to use such knowledge and put it into practice. If we don't, we're wasting this faculty.

I would like to find some other way of referring to them besides "non-human" animals... humans are animals, too, so it's logical. But if we've seen other ideas, please let me know. I want to decentralize the human and not collectivize everyone else.

It's less about "veganism" and who is "vegan" and more about... are we recognizing animals' intrinsic dignity and will to live, and are we willing to take steps to put that into action.

Centering their lives, not our own comforts and desires. Because we're capable of the added reflection, we have this moral duty to use such knowledge and put it into practice. If we don't, we're wasting this faculty.

At the end of the day, it's not about our diet. It's about the fact that non-human animals are individuals, too, who want to live. The same things that give humans intrinsic dignity also apply to other animals with brains and nervous systems.
