  1. New ceramic lampshade design. Apart from the fact that the piece deformed when drying and that I sawed and sanded it after firing, it turned out "acceptable".

I like the fit between the wooden rod and the ceramic. The thermal design got a little worse; it now works at 1 or 2 degrees warmer than before.

And what I liked least is that now the lamp head is very large in relation to the base 🤨. So I have to think about how to fix this 🤔.

  3. Experiments with an alternative wooden lampshade. The problem with the ceramic screen I was using is that it is very difficult to manufacture, because it deforms when it dries due to the cutouts it has. The only way to avoid that that I found is to make the cutouts after the piece is already baked... and that takes a looooong time with saws and diamond micro-files 🤯.

  7. @raymaccarthy @m_berberich @davidrevoy Star Trek: The Next Generation added "Heisenberg Compensators" to the standard list of technobabble to lampshade just how broken the described "physics" of transporters were. #WernerHeisenberg is closely associated with the #UncertaintyPrinciple which is a powerful barrier to even describing the state of a body's position and momentum at the same time.

Disturbing thought, what if transporters vaporized people and got some information, and then recreated living beings on the other side with AI slop?

  9. I am yet to read the book, but I'll interested to see if he covers . Early Adams seems to me a perfect example, with his "the last sane man in the world" outlook, lampshaded by the character Wonko The Sane.

I wonder if his later work was a reaction to this, with better female characters and a clinically depressed humanism which was almost Vonnegut-like in tone.

  14. Catching up on YouTube and I didn't realise #EmpiresSMP was finishing. Just watched Joel's finale episode and it feels so rushed.

He lampshaded it a bit with finishing the Hermes stuff, but other Empires folks were in the middle of big storylines.

What's going on with The Fae? What about the crown? Why decorate spawn just as you're ending?

I'm sure they've got good reasons, but I was really getting into it.

  19. #UK to strip #migrants of everything except #weddingRing, says #TheSun. #Jewellery & watches, #necklaces & chains, cars & bikes will be seized and sold.

There was a country in Central Europe famous for taking the last assets of people who had lost everything else. Maybe they can give technical advice to the #Brits.

How long before #ShabanaMahmood's #HomeOffice starts seizing #goldteeth and fillings? Tattoos for lampshades?

  21. A quotation from Arthur Conan Doyle

I had no idea that such individuals exist outside of stories.

    Story (1886-04), “A Study in Scarlet,” Part 1, ch. 2 [Watson], Beeton’s Christmas Annual, Vol. 28 (1887-11-21)

  26. Our most recent Halloween addition.

This paper pumpkin lantern was purchased from a flea market in Austin, TX. Unopened, with a date of 1976 on the package. You fan out the lantern until it fits over your lamp shade.

With modern LED bulbs, this is no issue but curious how they handled this back in the 70s without burning the house down!

  27. @Edelruth
This thingy is a concrete septic tank; not lovely, so I made lemonade.

I call it #UnderTheSea. The main piece is an upside down iron table base in the shape of a half circle. Twin teal-colored blown glass pieces are under the table. A stained glass lamp shade is on top the table base. Metal gold deco balls, blue ceramic coral, and white lights surround with decofabric.

A work in progress over time. Fencing in this area for the dogs allows me to focus on tweaking the design.

  29. A note regarding the gamble that you take when you put something behind a paywall.

I ran into an article titled:

"America Should Only Have One Time Zone"

I thought this was a crazy idea, but I was curious. So I clicked on the link. I start reading, and then I come to something asking me to subscribe to read the rest of the article. (I did not realize I was on Substack.)

The bit I can read ends with this:

"But Katherine, I can almost hear you saying, this is meeting madness with more lunacy. No. Very smart people agree with me."

NIce lampshading here, but the problem is that with your idiotic paywall, I'll never get to read your fabulous argument as to why you proposition makes any bloody sense, and why I should not consider you a crackpot.

Don't get me wrong, I do have paywalls too on some of my articles, but the way *this* one is organized is self-defeating.
