  3. We've all had that experience talking to friends on the other side of a planet. I say "Good morning friend!" and they respond "Well, it's 7 PM here but good morning".

First, I propose a stopgap of just saying "Good evening! How was work yesterday?" for them. It actually makes sense that their greeting is incongruent with yours, they're on the other side of a planet.

Then, in terms of space colonization, it would probably be useful to just say:

"Good time! How are the experiments coming?"

or better, a new word from an abbreviation:

"Good tod, have you seen Mary?"

    (time of day)

Spain should probably follow and stay permanently at GMT+1 like Portugal and UK for the Iberian Península and Balearic islands, and GMT+0 for Canary islands.

  13. @meluzzy Unix used, and POSIX defines, timezones as XXXnnYYY... where nn is the number of hours to *add* to get to UTC (making USian zones positive). ISO 8601 defines zones as number of hours *added* to UTC (making European zones positive).

BTW, the TZ database uses the zones Etc/GMT-6 (with GMT-6 as an alias), whereas "UTC-06" probably falls under the POSIX rules.

  15. In the mid-1990s I lived in Vancouver on the Pacific coast, and I was interviewing for a job in Florida. The person interviewing me misunderstood how timezones work.

Interview was scheduled for 9am. He thought he had to call me at 6am Eastern Time, which worked out to be 3am Pacific Time for me.

Phone rings at 3am. I was half asleep and confused, and he offered to call back in a few hours. I told him nevermind, I'm awake now, let's do the interview!

I did end up getting the job, and worked there for some time.

  17. Pacific Time: Canada's Western Gateway! 🌅

British Columbia runs on Pacific Time, fixed permanently at UTC-7 year-round. Home to Vancouver, Victoria, and most of the province, BC ended its twice-yearly clock changes in 2026 — no more springing forward or falling back. A few northeastern communities like Dawson Creek were already at UTC-7 year-round, so nothing changed for them. #Canada #TimeZones #BritishColumbia #PST

  23. CW: Repost: British Columbia, Time Zones, and Postgres

In March 8, 2026, British Columbia moved their clocks to a year-round Pacific Daylight Savings Time, and doubtless broke a lot of software. Every time I work on better timezone support for Three Rings, this is the kind of story that terrifies me!

  24. Dear logging and ticketing tools,

if you do not show the time zone for times, you are wrong.

It's like giving coordinates, but not the origin

    "over 3 and up 4"

From where? Where I am now? Where I was at the time? I don't know the time because you didn't give a time zone! Heck, you only gave the day within +/- 1

    signed,

    everybody

PS: when multiple tools do this it's a right pain to build a timeline, you are wasting my time
