The mixed level 6 and level 5 party, aware of the creature in advance, moved to deal with the CR 7 #mythic dread #vukodlak that they avoided the previous session.
I thought the vukodlak was under-CRed at CR 7 but the party took it out without taking any damage. Of course they knew it was there and they came prepared.
The hardest part of the fight for them was attacking through their own spells.

3FMC Editorial – “The Return of Existential Horror: Why We Fear Meaninglessness More Than Monsters”
Welcome back again, Gorehounds, Horrorfiends, and anyone else who snuck in to watch Horror movies.
3FMC back with you on this windy, rainy, afternoon, about a topic that we have received some talk about. Many of you have seen in the recent past that a shift has now become public in the Horror genre after the surprise success of the two internet-based Horror films: The Backrooms, and Obsession. Both of these films started out online and eventually worked their way into the Hollywood studio, not so much due to content and filling, but because of cost-effectiveness. If these kids (and at 20 and 27, respectively they are) who have barely been to college or have a degree, never been on the set of a movie, never worked as a PA or an AD, managed to take an idea that was first shown to legions of fans on YouTube, and then managed to blow away Hollywood’s best films that cost millions to make – someone is doing something very wrong. For the less perceptive of you: it’s not the kids.
We totally applaud the work of Kane Parsons and Curry Barker and the success that they had. We hope that Hollywood will look in the director of the Internet more for the newest generation of scares and see that there is a viable treasure trove of work and talent there, and that it has been there for years. We also feel this way because some of the members of the 3FMC are also producers, writers, and content creators in the same neighborhood that Kane Parsons worked in. Internet Horror has been something that has long entertained the newer persons and the younger crowds of America. For years, it has been called Micro Horror because it is shown on the micro screen(cellphones) rather than the small screen (TV/computer) or the big screen (movie theater), and there were a few genres that were caught under the umbrella of Micro Horror:
- Creepypasta
- Alternate Reality Game’s (ARG’s)
- Emergency Alert System Horror (or EAS Horror)
- Analog Horror
- Liminal Space Horror
- Spoken-Word, or Voiceover Horror
Many of these have seen popularity go from the cult status to an explosion of popularity. Some have hit the big screen and failed (Creepypasta), others have yet to hit the big screen (ARG’s, Spoken-Word), some are about to see the big screen (Analog Horror), and some will most likely never see the big screen (EAS Horror). One thing is for sure amongst the Micro Horror community: they do not lack for originality. This is the freshest pool of new ideas we have ever seen. Think of it as the Poland Spring of Horror. In an era of remakes, reboots, and rehashes, this is the freshest thing going. Hollywood should toss their usual junk of Superheroes and excessively violent action films for these up and comers. And why is all of this important to the Horror Genre, you ask?
1. Horror Has Shifted From External Threats to Internal Collapse: Because the days of children being scared to death by people in masks, monsters, slashers, demons, and ghosts has just about come to an end. Their time has passed. While it is fun for them to join in their parents’ delight when a new Halloween or Friday the 13th movie comes out, overall, that is not the bag of the newer school of Horror. Modern horror seems to focus more on:
- identity dissolution
- existential dread
- psychological unraveling
- reality breakdown
Films like Hereditary, Annihilation, The Empty Man, Possessor, and Skinamarink focus on the fear of losing oneself, not the fear of being attacked. The days of the “stalk and slash” are all but gone. It may tickle the fancy of some of the newer generation to have something from the past become re-visited, but for the most part, that is just not how the new school is wired.
2. The Rise of Cosmic Dread: Lovecraft planted the seed with his way-out themes, but modern creators have evolved it:
- humanity’s insignificance
- incomprehensible forces
- the terror of the infinite
- the horror of being forgotten
This is horror without villains — just the crushing weight of existence. It’s more of helplessness without help aka The Kobayashi Maru. No one likes being put in a “no win situation” and to the newer generation, this is extremely uncomfortable. Even when some of our writer/producer friends here at the 3FMC have dropped work that left an ending uncertain or ambiguous and open, they would be inundated with letters and comments from angry fans demanding either a resolution or sequel. Some have even gotten letters that they wanted the ending re-wrote to not be an unhappy one where everyone died. Could you imagine if back in 1985, how the directors would have responded if they were inundated with letters to change the ending of Friday the 13th because they didn’t like what happened to Alice? Yeah, ok kids.
3. The Collapse of Shared Reality: The world that we live in right now has created things like deepfakes, misinformation, synthetic media, algorithmic echo chambers, and fractured truth. It’s sad fact of living in a world that spends most of its time in the cyberworld, rather than the real world. The new age Horror makers have cashed in on this, as they know people fear not knowing what’s real, not trusting their senses, not trusting their memories. This is existential horror in the digital age. It also proves the prophecy of Brian O’Blivion from Videodrome true of where the mind was going to go to.
4. Identity as a Fragile Construct: Many people today struggle with identity issues, and a lot of that stems from either past experiences, or being “someone” online, but no one in the real world. The switch out is sometimes too much for people to handle. This can lead to a lot of problems with one’s identity of self. Moviemakers have picked up on these subtle issues and developed stories and films that revolve around:
- dissociation
- depersonalization
- the fear of losing your sense of self
- the horror of becoming someone else
- or becoming no one
Films like Videodrome, Black Swan, Enemy, and Possessor thrive here.
5. Why Gen Z and Gen Alpha Gravitate Toward Existential Horror: As we have seen with films like The Backrooms and Obsession, the majority of the people that went to see these films when they came out, were in the Gen Z and Gen Alpha groups. >75% of the ticket sales for those films were bought by people 35 yrs old and under. In case you are in the Gen Z and Gen Alpha crowd and are reading this: This is your Horror genre. This is the Synthwave of Horror films – a genre that is not new to the younger crowd, but older people don’t know about it too much. And just as the younger generations will be chilled and entertained by films like Backrooms/Obsession , the older crowd may not find that there is not enough there to hold their interest. As such, the new age of Horror and the Gen Z/Alpha crowds nowadays are frightened by climate anxiety, economic instability, digital identity fragmentation, constant exposure to global crises, and the feeling of living in a world without a stable future. Existential horror resonates with them because it mirrors their lived experience.
6. The Horror of Meaninglessness: This is the philosophical core. Themes of nihilism, absurdism, the fear of cosmic indifference, the dread of purposelessness, and the terror of being a temporary flicker in an uncaring universe have found their way into our Horror films more in the last 5-10 yrs than it did in the previous 20. It’s one thing to feel that way as we all may have at one time or another, but to have that message delivered to you hot and fresh with no coating? That’s rough. This is horror that doesn’t need monsters — the universe itself is the antagonist. You will see this more later when a production from 3FMC hits the airwaves.
7. Why This Horror Feels More Real Than Ever?: Because it is for a lot of people. Connection to the viewer is the best way to reach them with your message. You wont get the same effect if it is something that they cannot relate to. Modern life and technology has created a world of overstimulation, emotional burnout and outburst, digital dissociation, fractured identity, and existential fatigue. People aren’t afraid of dying. They’re afraid of not mattering. (To quote Frank Black from the TV series “Millennium”: ‘There’s nothing more sad than a life that ends and no one knows or cares. Here today, gone tomorrow.’)
Closing Remarks: The scariest horror today isn’t supernatural. It’s existential. It’s the quiet dread that creeps in when the screen goes dark and the room falls silent — the fear that the universe isn’t watching, isn’t listening, or never cared in the first place. It’s the space between lines, the silence between sounds. It’s the area that left you alone with your own thoughts, the ones you have been trying to avoid all of your life. Stay grisly.
