    A re-visit to the Yellow-crowned Night Herons…

I posted an image of a pair minding a nest, a few weeks ago.

I re-visited today, found one of them taking a walk while the other remained in the tree. Chicks unseen. “I shall return”.

These added to my “Birds” (and "Nature") albums on Flickr. @ flic.kr/p/2s7Xsgd

  5. Yellow-crowned night herons

Here is a pair of adults near the nest, perhaps biding their time until sunset, when they might set out for a crab dinner.

Fairly rare and reclusive among herons, I rarely see these. From a while back, I do have a few images of them on the ground, in my virtual rookery @

  6. Red-Eyed Passage

I spotted this Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) flying alongside a flock in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, traveling parallel to the ship I was on. It kept pace with us for a while—an unexpected companion in open water. I took a series of photos and like to release one now and then, like dispatches from that strange and beautiful crossing.

  7. Heron in Mid-Sentence

Here’s a photograph of a juvenile, yellow-crowned night heron (Nyctanassa violacea) I captured while sailing through the middle of the Caribbean Sea. The bird was part of a flock flying parallel to our ship, just outside our suite—an unexpected moment of grace in open water.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

  8. Eyes on the Wind

I spotted this yellow-crowned night heron (Nyctanassa violacea) a couple of years ago, flying over the open Caribbean Sea with ten or eleven companions. I remember feeling incredibly lucky—the birds were nearly level with my balcony, which I think was on the ninth deck. They glided alongside the ship, matching its speed with effortless grace. I spent somewhere between fifteen and thirty minutes photographing them, completely absorbed in the moment.

  9. Good morning. ⏰🫘☕

    29 January 2025

It’s peaceful sitting here alone early in the morning, sipping my coffee. Well, not quite alone—my trusty companions are curled up around me, but for now, they are quiet. I find it important to start writing early before my head clears; otherwise, I might stumble onto something lucid. What shall I write about? The weather? Travel? Politics? No, not politics—that's too alarming and depressing. Travel, then. I left the house yesterday to go to the pharmacy, and there were people moving around everywhere. It's something I’m oblivious to when I go about my business at home. Believe it or not, I’m not bored at all.

"For boredom speaks the language of time, and it is to teach you the most valuable lesson of your life - the lesson of your utter insignificance." - Joseph Brodsky

  10. Bird in Blue

I saw this yellow crowned night heron (Nyctanassa violacea) among a flock headed south in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

"While not as slender as a typical heron, the Yellow-crowned Night Heron’s smooth purple-gray colors, sharp black-and-white face, and long yellow plumes lend it a touch of elegance. They forage at all hours of the day and night, stalking crustaceans in shallow wetlands and wet fields. Their diet leans heavily on crabs and crayfish, which they catch with a lunge and shake apart, or swallow whole. They’re most common in coastal marshes, barrier islands, and mangroves, but their range extends inland as far as the Midwest." - allaboutbirds.org

  11. Flight in the Sun

This is a yellow-crowned night Herron (Nyctanassa violacea) last seen flying with a flock in the middle of the Carribean Sea in 2023.

As I've mentioned, I have a gallery of my favorite photos at:

    swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

Go there and take a look. Prints are for sale along with other doodads and I suppose it is kind of a business for me. But it's the kind of business where I don't care whether I sale anything or not. If you want something, by all means you are welcome to make a purchase. But I just want you to visit and maybe mark your favorites or leave a comment. Cheers 😄

  12. Good morning. 🌊🕊️🌊

    31 August 2024

Do you ever watch Columbo? I mean now days with all of the modern programming on TV. I admit that I do, it is like comfort food, something familiar from the good-ole-days. Even though I've seen every episode several times, I'll still tune in now and then when it is playing. Another, more recent, detective show that I like enough to graze on is Monk. I was introduced to Monk after the show was canceled. I was able to stream the entire 8 seasons. What a way to vegetate. You know there is something to be said about having to get up to turn the channel and adjust the antenna. We had to fill our time with doing things or reading.

  13. Birds Afloat on Blue

Here is a flock of yellow crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea) flying south over the Caribbean Sea. I couldn't make up my mind whether to lighten the sky of darken it to a deep blue. I went with a shade in between.

"This species shows up several times in the fossil record, and the earliest recorded fossil is 2–2.5 million years old (from Sarasota, Florida)." - allaboutbirds.org

  14. Yellow-crowned Night Heron

As Bhavna and I were ready to leave the Ocean City Welcome & Information Center, we walked back on the path toward the parking area. I slowed down a bit to make sure I didn’t miss any of the birds I expected to find. I’m glad I did. Bhavna was the one who noticed the Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) standing amidst the grass and wildflowers. I was preoccupied and distracted by a Song Sparrow hiding in a nearby bush.

  15. Middle of Nowhere.

Well, everything has to be somewhere, right? These yellow crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea) just happened to be in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, no land in sight. They paralleled a ship I was on for about an hour headed south. For this image, I couldn't decide on color or black and white, so why not post both and let the viewer decide.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then. I'm probably going to post both of these images.

  17. Good morning. ⏰🚿☕

    19 March 2024

Ben is in the family room yapping. He does that when I'm not in there with him sometimes. It's a new behavior, it's also getting close to mealtime, or as the dogs know it, "time to eat." I still have about 15 minutes before I need to get moving on that activity. Hmmm ... Ben just walked around to the office door and peeked in. then turned around and left again. Mealtime is a major event, conducted with a bit of pomp and ceremony. First the announcement "go outside, it's time to eat," then they go out while I go get their canned food, prep their food bowls and fill their water bowls, all while they watch attentively through the storm door. Finally, I open the door and watch them run to their bowls.

  18. Good morning. ☕☕☕

    26 January 2024

When I was a teenager in the 60s, I would sometimes hitchhike, which was incredibly reckless when I think back on those days. Now days, I occasionally see somebody else doing the same thing. It seems riskier than ever to hitchhike or pickup somebody who is hitchhiking. Granted we all take risks from time to time to get things done, but why take unnecessary risks. There is a reason we tell our children not to talk to strangers.

    Hmmm ... more coffee.

“You can’t just ask strangers to drive you up and down the country. This is the twenty first century. Strangers are more dangerous than ever; we’ve never been more dangerous.”

  19. The crossing.

These are some yellow crowned night-herons (Nyctanassa violacea) that I saw flying low south in the middle of the Caribbean Sea this past summer. They flew parallel with the ship I was on for a while.

"Found year-round along the crustacean-rich southern Atlantic coast, Yellow-crowned Night Herons in North America can also breed inland by feeding on crayfish in streams. They may breed as far north as Michigan and Ontario, and individuals can appear even farther north and west in spring (mainly adults) and late summer or early fall (juveniles)." - allaboutbirds.org

  20. Side by Side

"Oh, we ain't got a barrel of money
    Maybe we're ragged and funny
But we'll travel along singing a song
Side by side" - Dean Martin

I saw this gold crowned night-heron (Nyctanassa violacea) traveling along, side by side, with a flock in the middle of the Carribean Sea flying parallel with a ship I was on. I took a bunch of pics and like to dole one out now and again.

  22. A portrait photo of a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron. As they age, they will develop the beautiful steely blue and black plumage and yellow crown of an adult. This species population is considered stable but loss of habitat by development and habitat degradation could change that status.

  23. Good morning. 🌞🌞🌞

    11 August 2023

When I was a marine, we wore green cotton fatigues. We would take them to the cleaners and have them starched so that when we put them on, we had to "break starch" by parting the legs and arms so that we could push our legs through. We also had black combat boots that we usually spit shined every day.

A few years later, in the Army, it was mostly the same, but the uniforms were lighter and were supposed to be permeant press, they weren't. In 1980's the camouflage battle dress uniform became the approved work uniform.

After retiring, I still worked on Army posts in Europe and Louisiana. I saw the uniform change three or four times during those years, and they wear ruff brown boots that don't need shinning.
