Looking for #recommendations for #usb #wideband #radio #receiver please. Interested in #VLF up to a few #GHz, mostly want to hear #sferics, #hamradio, #shortwave, #solar, #jovian and any curiosities besides.
Would one single #SDR receiver span all that comfortably? Could it be used with some sort of computer visualisation software to watch the passband go by over time?
Got my #RSGB M-class callsign over 20 years ago, now curious about RF again :)

Due to the initial antenna connection problem, I missed the tuning-up, but most of today's SAQ is here. A strong, ~S7 signal today, with a clear signal from the carrier during key-up times.
Frequency control was excellent today, well within the design +/-10Hz. Given it's an electromechanically-regulated spinning metal disc, this is always pretty amazing!

24 December 2025: The Very Low Frequency (VLF) transmitter from Grimeton (Sweden) with the call sign SAQ goes on air. Is it possible to receive this transmitter with simple means in the city of Bern? Yes, it is possible.
Antenna: (DIY) three ferrite rods wound with HF litz wire.
DIY up-converter.
Degen DE1103 receiver.
The signal was weak, but it was still possible to copy it. -

Earthquake
The huge M8.8 earthquake at Kamchatka Peninsula last night not only shook the earth. It also generated gravity waves in the atmosphere which echoed around the world, causing the ionosphere to oscillate too.
Amateur DXers around the world have detected variations in the signal strength and Doppler shifts of HF (3-30 MHz) and VLF (3-30 kHz) radio stations shortly after the earthquake occurred. Some signal plots are attached from 7L4IOU and F5VLB (via the "Dopplergram" Google group).

Lovely sunny, cool morning for listening-out for SAQ, 17.2kHz, at 08:20UT.
You did remember, right?
-
Time to get your SDRs tuned-up to 17.2kHz again...

Was für eine Scheißnacht :-/ aber mit Grillen und SAQ wird alles besser :) #amateurfunk #hamradio #alexanderson #SAQ #VLF

Well, in north Wales, at least, the weather is looking OK-ish for being out in the woods, in the dark, with a 38m-long coax loop hung from the trees for the next SAQ event!

Six days before the next SAQ transmission!
Maybe someone can stick the reminder on QRZ.com for me? I'm fed up of logging in every time I look at it!🙏

Back in 2015 I made an #AR installation for the world heritage #rockcarving site in #Tanumshede, so I found it very interesting to see similar tech used to teach visitors about the workings of the #Grimeton #VLF #Radio Station.
It's a world heritage site on account of being the last operational long range mechanical radio transmitter, its design pre-dating vacuum tubes! It transmits #morsecode using a big spinning alternator wheel to generate a 17.2kHz signal which can reach New York and beyond

#Whistlers are #vlf radio signals from #lightning strikes. Rather than the usual 'spike' static they have traveled far enough for dispersion to stretch the signal into an ascending or descending whistle at AF freqs.
Typically the signals follow the Earth's magnetic field out into space, coming down at the magnetic conjugate. They can bounce back & forth multiple times.
These were likely 2-hop whistlers - a local storm source, reflecting from my conjugate in the South Pacific (not many storms).
