  4. Looking for #recommendations for #usb #wideband #radio #receiver please. Interested in #VLF up to a few #GHz, mostly want to hear #sferics, #hamradio, #shortwave, #solar, #jovian and any curiosities besides.

Would one single #SDR receiver span all that comfortably? Could it be used with some sort of computer visualisation software to watch the passband go by over time?

Got my #RSGB M-class callsign over 20 years ago, now curious about RF again :)

  9. Due to the initial antenna connection problem, I missed the tuning-up, but most of today's SAQ is here. A strong, ~S7 signal today, with a clear signal from the carrier during key-up times.

Frequency control was excellent today, well within the design +/-10Hz. Given it's an electromechanically-regulated spinning metal disc, this is always pretty amazing!

  14. 24 December 2025: The Very Low Frequency (VLF) transmitter from Grimeton (Sweden) with the call sign SAQ goes on air. Is it possible to receive this transmitter with simple means in the city of Bern? Yes, it is possible.
Antenna: (DIY) three ferrite rods wound with HF litz wire.
    DIY up-converter.
    Degen DE1103 receiver.
The signal was weak, but it was still possible to copy it.

  15. Tonight I'll play a new work, Radio Strata in Esc Gallery - Graz.

It is a journey in radio recordings I've made, from cosmic sources towards Earth, passing through satellites.

Come for the ending of the "Out of Control" exhibition! More infos here:

  21. METEOR ECHO, France, 10th August.

Every year, in early August, the Earth passes through the debris field left behind by a comet. Its dust burns up as it enters the atmosphere at high speed, creating trails that streak across the sky. For a brief moment, these shooting stars create a reflective effect for certain radio waves. It is then possible to “hear” the shooting star.

A special antenna and radio have been set up in Saint-Chels, France the 10th August, tuned to the frequency of a powerful radar located in Dijon.

Sporadically, a sound emerges from the noise: it is the rebound on the shooting star of the wave emitted in Dijon that reaches us.

By revealing this energy that passes through us, this device manifests the tenuous but tangible connection that links us to the star. A radio-astrology of micro-listening, which projects us toward the night sky, even when the full moon prevents us from observing it closely...

Thanks Samia El hadj for the help and Laurie Anne Estaque for the drawing

  28. Earthquake

The huge M8.8 earthquake at Kamchatka Peninsula last night not only shook the earth. It also generated gravity waves in the atmosphere which echoed around the world, causing the ionosphere to oscillate too.

Amateur DXers around the world have detected variations in the signal strength and Doppler shifts of HF (3-30 MHz) and VLF (3-30 kHz) radio stations shortly after the earthquake occurred. Some signal plots are attached from 7L4IOU and F5VLB (via the "Dopplergram" Google group).

  33. Almost missed the 1300z broadcast from SAQ, and my laptop battery was dead, but I managed to charge it just a little so it died again after 3 minutes xD This time I tried with my 5el LFA Yagi for FM, V-pol., and the signal was virtually inexistent... too little gain on VLF lol #SAQ #VLF

  36. And here's how #VLF reception looked like on that small coax delta loop, just <3m circumference. The figure-of-8 pattern was apparent, and while there was no noise, signals weren't too strong either. #SAQ recorded ~18dB SNR on S3 signal vs S0 noise... crazy! And Fldigi CW decoding failed, as usual.
