24 December 2025: The Very Low Frequency (VLF) transmitter from Grimeton (Sweden) with the call sign SAQ goes on air. Is it possible to receive this transmitter with simple means in the city of Bern? Yes, it is possible.
Antenna: (DIY) three ferrite rods wound with HF litz wire.
DIY up-converter.
Degen DE1103 receiver.
The signal was weak, but it was still possible to copy it. -
Yay! After several years of bad timing I finally managed to build myself an antenna to receive the #Grimeton mechanical radio transmitter #SAQ at only 17.2 kHz!
My Antenna was basically DL1DBC's E-Filed probe (https://dl1dbc.net/SAQ/homebrew_e-field.html ) but build with parts I had on the bench anyway.
So I went to our garden on this frosty morning.
And wow! did not expect such good reception on what is basically audio frequency with such small antenna! -

@tubetime somebody heared about the Test QSO of #SAQ ?
Today in Erfurt with long wire antenna to extern USB-Soundcard and https://www.qsl.net/dl4yhf/spectra1.html and also in the VLF webSDR http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ was nothing recieved. Hoping the Alternator works fine abd only some coil problem caused the damaged signal.
We hoping luck for all #grimeton friends and the operators nearby!

Since last time I visited the #Grimeton long wave radio station some years ago I've regretted that I didn't buy the receiver kit from the museum shop.
Today I was in the area and took a detour there to buy the kit. It turned out that I bought the last one left! The circuit seems pretty simple. Probably something that one could build from junk box parts. But it is nice to have all the required parts neatly packaged!
This is going to be a fun build when I get home. Now I will be ready for the Grimeton 100 year anniversary im December!
Also: Interesting way of testing the receiver spotted in the manual: play a recorder sound file of the SAQ 17.2 kHz signal on the computer speakers and the receicer will pick up the VLF RF! It is cute that the "RF" and "AF" ranges overlap...

It's a world heritage site on account of being the last operational long range mechanical radio transmitter, its design pre-dating vacuum tubes! It transmits #morsecode using a big spinning alternator wheel to generate a 17.2kHz signal which can reach New York and beyond
