  1. Currently top of the leaderboard for the iNaturalist “Great Southern Bioblitz 2025 - Waikato” for my photo of a grumpy #Turdus merula sitting on her nest.

(BTW click the #Turdus hash tag to see the photos and also earlier commentary on why she’s sitting on a nest.)

  6. Kids found a baby European song thrush (#Turdus philomelos?) on the ground. Too young to have fledged but a few days away. Must have fallen out of the nest. I don’t mind the song thrush because they kill the snails so I went to return it to the nest in the Manatu.

Daughter up the ladder looked in the nest: they’re all dead!!!

I went up the ladder to look. Two dead baby birds, murdered, (and look away now) their internal organs eaten out of their corpses. Probably eaten by a rat.

  11. I spied the resident female Manu pango (#Turdus merula) black bird and a previously unseen male of the same species contorting themselves into some novel shapes as well as dancing most suggestively.

If I correct interpret the “stacked round borb” correctly then the nest may soon contain fertilised eggs!

I do not have any photos as I’d moved the tripod out of the sink so I could wash the dishes.

  16. I just set up a trail cam on my mini-pond so brace yourself for bird pics. Here's a foolish American robin about to fly off with a leaf that is still very much attached to the plant. #turdus #birds #robin #pond #trailcam #nature #gardepro

  26. Heard a strange banging outside our bedroom. Ran outside to check.

Scared off a European song thrush (#Turdus philomelos) that was just cracking into its breakfast of snails.

It found our deck was the perfect hardness for getting into the snail shell.

Sorry about your breakfast! Have as many snails as you like!

  31. Stepped out of my office and there was a heck of a lot of noise as many blackbirds flew off.

One didn’t so I picked it up. Juvenile that had been taking a beating. Had some blood on it, losing a lot of feathers.

I accidentally dropped it and it flew off before I could get a photo. #Turdus

  36. Some #birds for y'all.

To begin with, here's a stately American robin which was running along the fence to avoid me.
