Earlier, Linux 6.15 enabled the Touch Bar support for the newer Silicon-based MacBook Pro laptops that allowed Linux distributions to use this feature to showcase quick actions. This was laid out in an article that we wrote earlier that it was for the Silicon MacBook Pro laptops, with potential expansion being planned later, under the
apple_z2kernel driver.Today, a merge request has surfaced for the Linux 6.17 merge window, which added some of the interesting changes. One of those changes, apart from the Apple hardware-specific fixes, is that Linux 6.17 introduces support for Touch Bar for the older x86-based MacBook Pro laptops. Since this request is approved, the first release candidate for Linux 6.17 will allow those MacBook Pros running Linux to use the Touch Bar feature.
If you’re unable to use the Touch Bar on your old MacBook Pro running a Linux distribution, you should be able to do so on a distribution that uses Linux 6.17. For those with the Silicon-based MacBook Pros, they can already use the Touch Bar, starting from Linux 6.15.

Camera Control, będzie powtórka z Touch Bara?
Gdybym miał wskazać jedną z nowości, o której po premierze tegorocznych flagowców od Apple mówi i pisze się najwięcej, to jest to Camera Control. Niestety dla Apple, ponieważ większość z nas jest chyba zgodna co do tego, że firma z Cupertino przedobrzyła.

Tytanowa ręka Apple
Od momentu, gdy sam zobaczyłem pierwszy raz nowe iPhone’y i potrzebowałem poprowadzenia mnie za rękę, abym zrozumiał działanie Camera Control – wiedziałem, że coś tu nie gra. W sensie takim, że Apple wydaje mi się ostatnią firmą na liście tych, które powinny komukolwiek cokolwiek tłumaczyć. Przecież ten ich sprzęt „po prostu działa”, prawda? Przecież to ich oprogramowanie ma być tak intuicyjne, w wątpliwość do niedawna podałby to tylko szaleniec.
Tymczasem reakcja klientów, a także recenzentów, przez których mam na myśli także i przede wszystkim osoby zawodowo zajmujące się fotografią, jest ostra jak brzytwa albo jak tytanowa ręka Apple w ich spotach reklamowych promujących korzystanie z Camera Control.
Zupełnie inaczej patrzy się na te klipy, na których ręka, a nawet trzymająca iPhone’a z serii 16 dłoń (z wyjątkiem kciuka spoczywającego na Camera Control) są całkowicie nieruchome. Dosłownie jak z tytanu. Analogia ta nasuwa się sama, choć jest to ironia, ponieważ w codziennym użytkowaniu niemożliwe okazuje się zachowanie poprawnej stabilizacji przy szybkim użyciu Camera Control.
Nowy spust migawki jest zbyt twardy, gdy używamy go jako wyzwalacz kamery, i zbyt delikatny, jeśli chcemy kontrolować dodatkowe funkcje zaszyte pod wyskakującym menu systemu iOS 18, po lekkim naciśnięciu powierzchni haptycznej Camera Control. Jasne, że da się to zmienić w ustawieniach, co polecam zdecydowanie zrobić od razu po zakupie iPhone’a 16 lub 16 Pro i o czym pisałem szerzej w jednym z wydań mojego newslettera. Można, ale czy klient Apple – klient z ulicy – powinien znać te wszystkie możliwości personalizacji, czy raczej powinien być chroniony przed przypadkowym uruchomieniem w kieszeni kamery, czy destabilizacją zdjęcia, które – gdyby użył dotychczasowego interfejsu aplikacji Aparat, a nie Camera Control – wyszłoby idealne?
Wątpię.
Lepiej późno niż wcale?
Krytyka nie jest dla Apple czymś nowym ani czymś złym. Firma doskonale pamięta, jak szeroki rynek przyjął Touch Bara. Minęły długie lata, zanim Apple wycofało się z tego pomysłu i przyznało do błędu. Wtedy także deweloperzy mieli uratować sprawę, dostając API do integracji ich aplikacji z magicznym paskiem dotykowym w MacBookach. Tylko promil z nich widział w tym sens i to zrobił. Wtedy także mówiono, że to nowy sposób obsługi Maca. Nowy element klawiatury. I wtedy także klienci pytali: „Ale po co zmieniać zwyczajną klawiaturę? Przecież jest jedną z najlepszych na rynku?”.
A pamiętacie, co było rok temu z FineWoven? Choć nadal jest w ofercie, to jednak etui z tego tworzywa już nie kupimy od Apple. Wszyscy pamiętamy, jak bardzo chybiony był to pomysł. Czy intencje były złe? Oczywiście, że nie! Zatem co poszło nie tak i co łączy te trzy wynalazki?
Moim zdaniem wygląda to tak, jakby nikt przed premierą nie używał tych wszystkich urządzeń uzbrojonych w nowe rozwiązania – w codzienności. Po prostu jako swoich. Jasne, że Apple z pewnością przeprowadza setki testów, ale czy są to testy inne niż laboratoryjne? Nigdy o tym nie powiedziano ani tego nie wyjaśniono, a wydaje mi się, że w warunkach codziennego użytkowania – cóż, można to było sprawdzić lepiej.
Apple cenię przede wszystkim za niesamowitą zdolność łączenia oprogramowania ze sprzętem. Nie mają na tym polu konkurencji. Cenię ich także za to, że przez lata byli wierni swojemu DNA, w którym zaszyta jest zasada: „Nie komplikuj. Technologia ma być prosta”.
Oby ta zasada była znowu wyraźnie widoczna, bo mam wrażenie, że powoli zaczyna się rozmywać.
