Linux 6.17 enables Touch Bar support for x86 MacBook Pro laptops
Earlier, Linux 6.15 enabled the Touch Bar support for the newer Silicon-based MacBook Pro laptops that allowed Linux distributions to use this feature to showcase quick actions. This was laid out in an article that we wrote earlier that it was for the Silicon MacBook Pro laptops, with potential expansion being planned later, under the
apple_z2kernel driver.Today, a merge request has surfaced for the Linux 6.17 merge window, which added some of the interesting changes. One of those changes, apart from the Apple hardware-specific fixes, is that Linux 6.17 introduces support for Touch Bar for the older x86-based MacBook Pro laptops. Since this request is approved, the first release candidate for Linux 6.17 will allow those MacBook Pros running Linux to use the Touch Bar feature.
If you’re unable to use the Touch Bar on your old MacBook Pro running a Linux distribution, you should be able to do so on a distribution that uses Linux 6.17. For those with the Silicon-based MacBook Pros, they can already use the Touch Bar, starting from Linux 6.15.

Linux 6.15 will support Apple Z2 Touch Bar
Linux 6.15 is growing up with more and more improvements and support for more devices, including Apple MacBook laptops with the Z2 Touch Bar. This is for the Apple Silicon devices that rely on the Z2 protocol to make the Touch Bar work on macOS, but Linux 6.15 will have support for the Touch Bar in such devices.
The
apple_z2driver was merged to the kernel prior to the first release candidate. This driver enables Linux to utilize the Apple Touch Bar in MacBooks that use the Silicon hardware using the Z2 protocol. It was developed by the Asahi Linux developers as they’re enhancing the experience of Linux desktop in such devices. When this Linux version gets released to the public, which should happen after several release candidates, users with MacBook laptops with the Touch Bar will be able to use it in Linux distributions.
As an aside, we expect that Linux 6.15 RC1 will be out today, provided that everything goes fine during development. This is so that curious people and advanced users will be able to test this version of Linux.

Things that were obvious design mistakes from #Apple:
- #TouchBar (not the technology, but the implementation)
- Removing #MagSafe (people like the convenience of not killing their laptop over tripping cables)
- Re-adding MagSafe (without actually addressing the problem that you need a whole new cable to just deliver power)
- Square alignment of arrow keys (does this even need a comment?)
- Removing the escape key (it's not just nerds)
- #TouchID button that can't visually tell you that it wants your attention (believe it or not, but some people have no effing clue what to do when the TouchID popup pops up)
- The contrast of #DarkMode on #OSX calendars (eternal shit show of trying to read purple text on a slightly darker purple background)
- Everything related to #EmojiPicker (the way it's been buggy for years, the slowness, the non functional fuzzy search, the 3! distinct and horrible ways it works, ...)
- #iMessage as a whole (anyone who is a tiny bit critical can't stand this piece of UX hell) -
"And Genie, for my last wish, I would like Apple to create a Magic Keyboard with both the function key row and the Touch bar."

Flexbar touchscreen controller for PC or Mac picks up where the MacBook Touch Bar left off (crowdfunding)
A few years after Apple stopped shipping MacBook Pro models with a Touch Bar, a startup called ENIAC is banking on the idea that the reason Apple’s version proved unpopular wasn’t because the idea lacked merit… but because it didn’t go far enough in offering users enough customization options.
So ENIAC has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for a Touch Bar-style gadget called the Flexbar. It’s a widescreen, high-resolution touchscreen controller for PC and Mac computers that you can position above the keyboard, off to the side, or any other place you’d like to see context-dependent shortcuts for apps running on your computer.
When the Touch Bar first launched in 2016, Apple positioned it as a modern replacement for the Fn keys on a keyboard. Instead of a set of physical keys that served a single purpose, the idea was to give you a small touchscreen display that could show different icons for different apps, make it easier to add emojis to messages, and also control volume, brightness, and other screen settings. Of course, you could also use it for F1 – F12 keys.
But a touchscreen has some shortcomings. You don’t get the same kind of tactile feedback when using it as you’d get from physical keys, which can make touch typing tricky. And since different icons are displayed in different situations, you probably need to look at the Touch Bar nearly every time you want to trigger an action anyway, which takes your eyes away from the screen.
It’s unclear if ENIAC’s Flexbar addresses all of those issues. But this 10 inch, 2170 x 60 pixel AMOLED touchscreen display is a standalone device rather than one that’s built into a laptop keyboard. And that means you can use it with a laptop, desktop or tablet and position it in an aluminum stand so that the Flexbar is angled to be within your line of sight. It also offers haptic feedback when you press the screen.
The Flexbar also isn’t limited to Macs. It can also work with Windows PCs, and to a lesser extend with Android, iPadOS, and other operating systems, although ENIAC says you’ll need a Windows or Mac computer for full functionality – other operating systems only support hotkeys, while Windows and Mac apps will let users customize the behavior of the touchscreen controller.
So far the hardware appears to be pretty much ready to go, but software is still a work in progress. There are already bunch of preloaded shortcuts and controls for some popular programs, but ENIAC is hoping to encourage third-party developers to create additional controls that could be downloaded and installed through a “Plugin system and Marketplace” that’s expected to launch in the second quarter of 2025. Users will also be able to create their own custom designs using a FlexBarDesigner app – an alpha version of the Windows app is already available for download from the Kickstarter page.
The Flexbar is expected to have a retail price of $179, but crowdfunding backers can reserve one for a pledge of $119 or more in hopes of receiving one in February, 2025. But keep in mind that this is a crowdfunding campaign for a device that does not yet exist in large volumes – so there’s a chance that ENIAC will fail to meet that deadline, or that the Flexbar won’t live up to expectations. And we already know that the plugin ecosystem and marketplace isn’t expected to be available until sometime after the hardware begins shipping to backers. So, as with any crowdfunding campaign, it’s probably best to proceed with caution.

The discontinued MacBook Pro's Touch Bar resurrected as a standalone device.
I thought the original Touch Bar was an interesting idea, I just really didn't like that it replaced physical keys.

My #MacBookPro M1 Pro 14” (18,4) being under repair, I am back with a #TouchBar 13” model from 2017 (14,2) for the week.
The #TouchBar is useless to me, the keyboard way less comfortable, the screen has big bezels and I miss #MagSafe.
But I must admit I enjoy the form factor and the lighter weight.
I hope that with the next design generation #Apple will provide the best blend of those two models.
I am even ready to resort to external dongle for #HDMI and #SDcard because I don’t use them much. -
Potentially way too late (as usual), but I've just released #TouchBarSpeak: an app that speaks the name of escape and F1–F12 keys when they're pressed once, and actually activates them when they're pressed twice quickly.
Originally called NSFKeys, and originally made as an experiment during the Intel Macbook/Touch Bar/Boot Camp era, rewritten this month, the app is meant to make using a touch bar on Windows more accessible.
Maybe it could still be useful?
I have also updated Capbeeper, fixing the double tray menu open bug, featuring slight sound volume adjustments, and (thanks to TouchBarSpeak), the “Run as admin” feature/option, accessible from the systray menu.
I hope any of this is useful, if it sounds like so, feel free to check things out.

If you need to trigger display detection on macOS, you can do it by pressing together the Command-“Brightness up” keys.
You can also switch between display mirroring/extension typing Command-“Brightness down" keys.
On Macs with Touch Bar, you need to expand the Control Strip (see, for instance this support link: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/use-the-touch-bar-mchlbfd5b039/mac), and then press Command and the relevant Touch Bar icon.
