  1. AV Club: U.S. government registers “aliens.gov” domain, which is pretty good as distractions go. “Shout-out today to whichever (presumably well-stocked) portion of the Trump administration works to distract the American public from the shit all their coworkers get up to on a daily basis, because they’ve worked up a doozy this week: Officially registering—per 404 Media, and sites that track […]

  5. TorrentFreak: Anna’s Archive Loses .LI Domain As Legal Pressure Mounts. “Anna’s Archive lost its .li domain a few hours ago, likely due to legal pressure. The shadow library’s domain name was outright deleted instead of suspended. Whether the domain registrar or registry is responsible is unknown, but the latter seems more plausible. Anna’s Archive was briefly down to one remaining domain […]

  6. Because we're talking a lot about digital independence right now (as we should), here's some advice:

Before you register a domain name, please check who operates its top level domain, as much of your digital independence will depend on who they are! Also, you might be surprised who you're sponsoring.

The ICANN has a list of the registry operators:

  7. Dear fellow Canadian Mastodon-ers...

My preferred Dot CA domain name is currently being cyber-squatted.

Because the content is Canada specific, as will be a number of its would-be sub-domains,

    I want the Dot CA.

Yet since I can't have it as I don't want to reward the cyber-squatter

Please help me by suggesting alternate Top Level Domains that to most Canadians would still be kind of a Canadian TLD.

    Thank you! Eh!

  8. My #Interisle colleagues and I recently submitted a response to the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's consultation, Powers in Relation to UK-Related Domain Name Registries (gov.uk/government/consultation).

The consultation seeks input on policies for mitigating domain name abuse and misuse in UK-related top-level domains (TLDs).

We shared findings from our Phishing Landscape 2023 report (interisle.net/PhishingLandscap), and explained why policies and procedures must aim at preventing criminals from maliciously registering names _before_ they are used to perpetrate cybercrimes. We also recommend that the UK use the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime's definitions of harmful activities as its basis for defining prohibited uses of domain names, including facilitating multi-jurisdictional abuse mitigation and enforcement.
