While walking through one of the most beautiful neighborhoods we’ve discovered, I came across a handmade spin wheel by the sidewalk—each section offering a word to carry with you: believe, grateful, make peace, celebrate, laugh, love, hope, unite, forge ahead.
Of course, I gave it a spin.
And it landed on HOPE.That one word struck deep—especially today, as Israel marks Tisha B’Av, a day of mourning and reflection over destruction, exile, and suffering through the generations.
Hope—for the release of the hostages.
Hope—for true and lasting peace.
Hope—for my students and all who long to connect with the beauty of Hebrew.
Hope—that what I teach finds its way into the hearts that need it most.It was exactly the message I needed today. Maybe it’s one you need too. 💫

To anyone fasting, I wish you a meaningful Tisha B'Av.
This article from one of the leaders of Smol Emuni isn't an easy read, but it's something to reckon with. If you're in New York, there are more rallies forthcoming to apply Jewish pressure on this on both Sunday & Monday.
I'm also going to add, to any non-Jews: these kinds of takes are not your place to make. Which also includes anyone reading this post thinking of making some obscene reductive comment condemning every Jew on earth for the ethnic cleansing and starvation in Gaza. You can show up for Gaza *without* being smug and hateful, and let Jews fight what is being done specifically in our names.

1/12 🧵 This is the most difficult Tisha B’Av I’ve ever experienced. Reading the book of Eicha/Lamentations has never been as real. #Tishabav

/teesh-’ah be-’av/ תשעה באב — A solemn day of mourning and reflection.
Observed tonight and tomorrow, תשעה באב (9 Av) marks the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem—by the Babylonians in 586 BCE and the Romans in 70 CE.
It’s a day of fasting, mourning, and reading Eicha (Lamentations), remembering not just ancient tragedies but centuries of Jewish suffering—from exile to expulsions and war.
More than mourning, it’s a call for introspection, unity, and hope.

From SVIVAH:
Our wonderful educators – Rebecca Minkus Lieberman and Batsheva Ganz, LMHC – are offering us a moment of reflection and introspection, sharing thoughts on ways we might embrace some of these “lessons of lament.”
Register: https://www.svivah.org/gatherings/9av2025
As always, come when you can, stay till you can’t. But, come. Let’s sit together this Tisha B’Av.

Tisha B'Av starts on the evening of 2nd August. Here the initial-word of Eicha (Lamentations) is flanked by a figure (Jeremiah?) and the open text of Eicha. #TishaBAv BL Add 9405; Biblical readings from a mahzor; 1309 CE; Germany; f.12r

My Tisha B’Av this year was:
- hearing Eicha (Lamentations) last night & this morning
- listening to kinot (Hebrew dirges/poems)
- watched the “Ordinary Men” documentary
- I can’t fast medically but I ate simply
- can’t wait to cut my nails and shave.

For the first Tisha B’Av after Oct. 7, new liturgy and traditions mourn a fresh tragedy, By Jackie Hajdenberg August 9, 2024
"...“It’s like there is a structure that is built into Tisha B’Av to create this container for grief,” said Rabbi Avi Strausberg, senior director of national learning initiatives at the egalitarian Hadar Institute. “I feel like sometimes we have to work hard to find the personal relevance to Tisha B’Av,” she added, but “this Tisha B’Av, I think, is just a wholly different experience.”
Haroush is one of a few Israelis who have turned to writing kinnot to grieve the losses of Oct. 7. Another kina by Nurit Hirschfeld-Skupinsky, a professor of midrash in Israel who is from Kibbutz Nahal Oz, another site of the attack, begins with the same words as Lamentations: “O How She Sat Alone.”

Tisha B'Av—A day of mourning, a history of pain. We remember the destruction of our Temples, the loss, and the resilience of the Jewish people.

**Tisha B'Av: A Day of Mourning and Reflection**
Tonight begins Tisha B'Av (תשעה באב), the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar. This day marks the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem—events that led to exile and suffering, shaping Jewish history profoundly.
Tisha B'Av is not just about mourning; it’s a time for introspection. Traditional observances include a 25-hour fast, refraining from pleasures, and reading the Book of Lamentations (איכה), lamenting Jerusalem's destruction.
This day underscores the resilience of the Jewish people and their enduring connection to faith, culture, and the land of Israel, even in the face of repeated devastations. It also calls us to reflect on the state of the world, unity, and the hope for a future of peace.
While Tisha B'Av is a day of sorrow, it carries the seeds of hope, as Jewish tradition teaches that the Messiah will be born on this day, turning mourning into joy.
