Mapuche Nation: Prisoners Declare a Hunger Strike in Support of Lonko Facundo Jones Huala

As a gesture of solidarity and firm support, the comrades of Lonko Francisco Facundo Jones Huala, housed in Pavilion 5 of Unit 6 in Rawson, have declared a hunger strike. They are protesting for the Lonko’s health, the unsanitary conditions of the infirmary where he has been hospitalized since yesterday, and the worsening prison conditions.

This means they are refusing the food provided by the Federal Penitentiary Service, in clear support of the Lonko (Mapuche leader) and as a protest demanding he receive immediate medical attention appropriate to his health condition, given the severity of his illness after more than 56 days of hunger strike and 6 days of dry fasting.

We denounce the fact that the Lonko, since being transferred yesterday in a state of decompensation to Santa Teresita Hospital, where he was given IV fluids and underwent tests, was returned that same afternoon and admitted to the prison’s infirmary. He was held incommunicado until this afternoon when he was discharged and taken back to his cellblock, only then able to contact his family. He has lost a significant amount of weight; after 56 days of hunger strike, he weighed 63 kilos yesterday, and a heart problem was detected as a result of the hunger strike, suggesting he may have suffered a heart attack.

The lives and well-being of many people deprived of their liberty matter. This extreme measure demonstrates the lack of political response to the demands made and the deteriorating health of Lonko Facundo Jones Huala.

We hold the prison and judicial authorities responsible for any irreversible consequences to the health and life of the Lonko and his comrades on hunger strike.

And although the risk is even greater, as a support network, we want to make this collective action visible in solidarity, mobilizing more people around the many injustices committed against the Lonko.

Retaliation Against Mapuche Political Prisoner Lonko Facundo Jones Huala for Hunger Strike

Public Complaint – April 28, 2026

Yesterday, Lonko Francisco Facundo Jones Huala began a liquid hunger strike after 11 months of preventive detention without formal accusation or sentence in Unit 6 of Rawson, Chubut. During yesterday morning he filed a written complaint addressed to the Federal Court of Bariloche, to the Head of Unit, to the Executive Branch and to whomever it may concern, for the serious prison conditions in which he is found and the constant violation of his rights as a member of an indigenous people; writing where, in addition, he specified the demands for which he is mobilized. However, the management of the maximum security prison where he is located, in the city of Rawson, did not send the text of the complaint to the court (as it should have done). Today, the Bariloche court confirmed to its lawyers from the Lawyers’ Guild that the prison did not send the letter.

At the same time, starting yesterday, when the hunger strike began, the Rawson Prison staff (shift chief and requisition staff) exercised mistreatment and discrimination when they announced the strike. So today they did not allow him to go to school, arguing that because there is a strike he could not attend. However, they forced him to go out into the yard. This is yet another violation of his rights.

We denounce this situation because it is serious, it is no coincidence that the note exposing the prison conditions just disappeared, even from a legal point of view because the document did not even reach the defense lawyers.

Below we transcribe the note issued by Lonko Facundo Jones Huala. Enough political persecution. For Lonko, his freedom now and/or transfer to Esquel.

To the Federal Court of Bariloche, to the head of the Unit, to the Executive Branch, to whomever it may concern, their office.

With the greatest consideration, I address you in my capacity as a Mapuche political prisoner, in order to inform that I have once again begun a Liquid Hunger Strike, of an indefinite nature, with the possibility of converting it into a Dry Strike.

As Lonko, traditional authority of my Lof, community, ensuring respect for my political and cultural rights means doing so for all my people. I not only come to denounce political imprisonment, but also, and therefore, the worsening of detention conditions. First, because of the distance from my family and community, and then, because in this unit there are no prison conditions for anyone, least of all political prisoners of the Mapuche culture.

To the ignorance of the federal prison service and society, it must be added that, according to the changes in personnel and leadership, the protocols with respect to my culture change. From the beginning, lawen’s entry was not respected in a complete and correct way, but also, having brought partial solutions, these are unknown today. The exit to the realization of my llellipun is altered according to the procedures or requisition shifts, being corrected only when there are managers with good will.

In everyday life there is no going out to the patio, it is mandatory only once a week when they want, even in the rain and due to search procedures, where they repeatedly break belongings or steal. These patios do not have access to bathrooms and we must walk through urine and human excrement.

The conditions of the pavilion are worsening instead of improving, being more internal, the freezer is smaller, due to the failures of the electrical system that burned the previous one due to leaks in the cables. Winter is coming and the people in charge who broke the heater haven’t fixed it. Floods are daily, like water cuts, just as a detail of daily life. As far as my culture is concerned, very little is respected. I cannot wear my clothing, nor carry out my practices except when the service allows it, but aggravated by the distance, it becomes practically impossible to carry out, for example, the wetripantu, Mapuche New Year, even if it is authorized. They are breaking my family and community ties, attacking my culture and spirituality. I do not have access not only to Lawen, but also to Mapuche food, and not only am I not convicted or even prosecuted, even with ten conduct. Held in a maximum security prison just for seeking dignity and justice for my people.

We have and demand the right to our territory, language, culture, medicine, spirituality, organization, justice.

Before the ships arrived, we were already here, we still are and we will be here in the future. We already know your corrupt world, but you do not know ours, there are still possibilities to build in harmony and remedy the dispossession.

-Decent prison conditions.

-Fair trial, due process.

-Transfer to the U14 of Esquel due to family proximity and to my lof.

-Application of ILO Convention 169, measures other than imprisonment.

-Cessation of political persecution and prosecution of all Mapuche fighters.

-Return of ancestral territory to the lofs in conflict.

-Political, non-judicial or repressive solution to the historical conflict.

-Application of article 75, paragraphs 17 and 22 of the National Constitution.

-Intervention of human rights organizations and international mediators for an appropriate political solution.

-Remove all Lof and Mapuche organizations from the list of terrorist organizations.

-According cultural protocols in the penitentiary system and every institution that they force us to transit.

-Cessation and withdrawal of mining, oil, transnational companies and landowners from Wallmapu.

-Freedom for all Mapuche political prisoners.

To the communities in resistance and public opinion in general, from our political imprisonment, in the Temuco prison, and through this communiqué we come to declare the following:

Kiñe: As political prisoners of the CAM, undersigned, we have taken the individual self-determination to initiate and accompany the current hunger strike that is being carried out by the werken Héctor LLaitul to demand his immediate transfer to this module of community members in the Temuco Prison, in his capacity as a historical leader of the Mapuche autonomist movement and who contributed from its beginnings in the struggle for Mapuche national liberation.

On Tuesday, August 6, he was transferred to a module for common prisoners.

Let us remember that the peñi was convicted through a spurious trial, through the Law of Internal Security of the State, a law of a political nature, censorship and persecution. As well as the use of witnesses without identity.

Concepción, August 07, 2024.- Call for the immediate transfer of Héctor Llaitul to Temuco. Today, family members, communities, leaders, sympathizers and students from different territories met to demand the immediate transfer of werken Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca to the community module of the Temuco prison. They also denounce the violations in the process: adequate medical care, worse prison conditions than those already present in module 89 where he was serving preventive detention, where not only is his current health at risk – with more than 60 days on hunger strike – but also his spiritual health. Respect for international agreements is required, even more so for Convention 169, since a Mapuche can be deprived of liberty, but never of his condition of being Mapuche.

Health situation of Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca after 66 days on hunger strike.

Concepción, August 07, 2024.- Call for the immediate transfer of Héctor Llaitul to Temuco. Today, family members, communities, leaders, sympathizers and students from different territories met to demand the immediate transfer of werken Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca to the community module of the Temuco prison. They also denounce the violations in the process: adequate medical care, worse prison conditions than those already present in module 89 where he was serving preventive detention, where not only is his current health at risk – with more than 60 days on hunger strike – but also his spiritual health. Respect for international agreements is required, even more so for Convention 169, since a Mapuche can be deprived of liberty, but never of his condition of being Mapuche.

To the Mapuche nation and to public opinion in general. From the autonomous Mapuche movement of Puelmapu we report the following:

That as of Wednesday, June 26 of this year 2024, our militant FRANCISCO FACUNDO JONES HUALA has begun an indefinite dry hunger strike.

Today is the end of his sentence, so he must be released immediately, as stated in the rulings and requests of both the Chilean and Argentine courts. Otherwise, international legal and diplomatic treaties in force between the two countries would be flagrantly and maliciously violated and all human rights would be violated. The detention is illegal and lacks argument, so the gendarmerie and the State of Chile would be the architects of the kidnapping of the Lonko.

The Gendarmerie and the Chilean judicial system are lying when they try to add another year to his sentence, when all the judicial rulings in which the extradition trial is being held again clearly say that his sentence ends on June 26, not on June 8, 2025 as indicated by the Chilean gendarmerie.

To let this violation, an illegal kidnapping, pass would set a serious precedent, because it is equivalent to allowing detentions outside the law. The courts and the political power, accomplices of the real power, by allowing this outrage do nothing more than make explicit the political-legal and police-military PERSECUTION AND REPRESSION in Mapuche territory, towards the most combative, conscious and revolutionary sectors of our nation, in favor of economic power.

The current strike of a political nature comes both to expose the level of repression of the oppressive states of Argentina and Chile that are at the service of transnationals and landowners; as well as to denounce the total lack of legal guarantees, of prison conditions with cultural relevance, the violation of the rights of Mapuche political prisoners, our relatives and close ones by the Gendarmerie.

States must recognize the existence of the political conflict and therefore our condition as political prisoners, in addition to valuing the intervention of relevant international organizations in search of political ways to resolve the conflict.

If there are no basic guarantees in our judicial processes or in the conditions of detention, and even worse, it is added that we are not released when we serve a sentence, can possible political solutions be conceived by trusting in the winka? This only reaffirms our anti-systemic, anti-colonial, anti-capitalist and anti-statist political tendencies and positions.

The oppressive Winka cannot be trusted even a bit: The only way is and will be confrontation, battle, a violent response to their state terrorism; if they do not respect their law or their treaties, if there are no guarantees when they imprison us, even less can we trust the return of lands. That is why the only real, valid and dignified thing is Mapuche direct action, and those who do not have courage for the weichán, at least do not get in the way.

Needless to say, the prison is assumed with dignity, the strike as a trench and its consequences: in honor of our prisoners and dead, for the maturation of our ancestral consciousness, for the reconstruction of our world and the Mapuche national liberation.

Return of all the usurped territory to our people!
Prison conditions in accordance with our condition as Mapuche political prisoners!
