"Grand Canyon of Arizona at Sunset," Thomas Moran, 1909.
Moran (1837-1926) was a painter of the Hudson River School, but he was often half-jokingly referred to as a founder of the Rocky Mountain School, as he, his friend Albert Bierstadt, and a few others, became famous primarily for their work in the American West. Moran especially became known for his paintings of Yellowstone, to the point that he was sometimes called "Yellowstone Moran."
The brother of noted marine artist Edward Moran, he was born in England but his family moved to the US when he was still a child. He became an engraver, then a magazine illustrator, before he and his brother opened a studio and began work as full-time artists.
In 1871 he was hired to be the resident artist of the first team to explore the Yellowstone region; his vivid depictions of it fired the public imagination and led to its designation as the first national park.
He traveled extensively for the next 40 years all over the west, including the Grand Canyon, where he painted this masterwork. Other works by him are in the Smithsonian's American Art museum, and in the White House collection.

Artist Thomas Moran painted the earliest and most influential images of #Yellowstone. His paintings helped to create the national park in 1872, and his monumental Grand Cañon of the Yellowstone was purchased by the U.S. Congress for a record price. Soon prints of the painting hung in school rooms across the country. The painting now belongs to the U.S. Dept. of the Interior Museum.
